View Full Version : Cops...What's the front plate law?

After my run in with a deer last week, the car will be going into the body shop on Monday to get a new bumper/grill insert + headlights. My questions is, I plan on telling the body shop to leave the plastic grill off(I like the way you get to see the two wholes in the bumper on the LS1 camaro) so I won't have a spot to mount the license plate until I get the SLP bracket if I decide to go that route. I remember the law stating that the license plate had to be mounted down some way, so if I put in the front window with say those suction cups that have the little clips on the end to mount it up, would I be legal? I figure if I did that though a cop might be able to give me a ticket for obstruction of view or something along those lines? I know theres a few cops on the board so if anyone can give me an idea on how to stay legal but not have the plate on the grill let me know.

not legal i already got a ticket for it. zip tie it till you get your overpriced bracket. or run the risk for a week or two till you get your overpriced bracket. or photocopy it and tape it to the bumper till you get your overpriced bracket.

I'll most likely be ordering the slp bracket because I'm still in highschool and there are always cops in the parking lot when i'm leaving so now they'll have a reason actually stop me so I guess I'll be running a plate in the front. I may just throw it in the window until i get pulled over.

its better than nothing. if you get a ticket, you can go to court with the body shop receipts and they will most likely drop it.

most of the time dont the cops just sit there and make sure no fights / drug deals and stuff of that nature go down? thats what happened at my school at least, and i had 20% tint and drove right past him numerous times never got pulled over

The SLP bracket is just an overpriced piece of aluminum. Just to go the store, grab some metal, and make your own.

ehh, they like to pull kids over for have more than one kid in the car and lately they've been hitting people up with tint tickets a lot so I'm almost 100% positive they'd hit me with atleast a warning.

nearly 2 years here.. been pulled over for it, but no tickets. you'll pass inspection without it. but i don't remember how much the ticket has gone up to. used to be worth it to not buyt he bracket and risk a ticket or two.

that's why I really want one of the cops on board to give some input because I thought maybe they'd have an idea on what the ticket cost. Besides running no plate, everything on my car is legal so I'm not worried about a cop pulling me over for the plate.

39:3-33: Improper Display/Ficticious Plates. In a nutshell, it must be properly affixed to the front of your vehicle. Can't be in the windshield (It then becomes an obstruction of vision AND improper display, which I got pulled over for in my youth). Find a way to get it mounted properly to the front of the car; you are enough of a target for the traffic guys and gals just by being in high school and driving an F body.

Very true, but if the ticket is only like $50, I may think twice before putting the plat on. I may just put it on my air deflector and mount it high enough that it wont scrape too much. I've seen a few people do that over on tech and it would help deflect more air into my FTRA.

Still wouldn't be legal mounted there. IMO, if you aren't going to put it on the front bumper, then leave it at home. No reason to put it somewhere else and draw an officer's attention to it there.

Keep it in your backseat and if and when you get stopped, explain that you are waiting for the bracket. Or, do as Tim said and pick up some metal and fabricate something yourself.

Keep the plate in your car (not in the dash) along with some sort of document showing you have paid for, and are waiting for the SLP bracket and you should be fine. $54 sounds about right if you decide to go no front plate at all. I would also not put it on the front lower air damn.

my front plate is wedged between the passenger seat and the center concole on my camaro and the one for my dd is M.I.A
the ticket is $54.00 got alot of them
plate must be mounted at a certain height, i had mine on my air dam, VERY low in my car. got told a few times to fix it, no tickets. i have 2 l tabs to the side off center of my SS grille where i can mount it, but now i just run only the back plate. i dont get bothered anymore either. it all really depends on the driver as th wether or not ur getting a ticket for it.
Somehow I have gotten lucky and never gotten pulled over or a ticket for not having my front license plate on... :???: haven't put on since I bought the car over 5 or 6 years now. *knocks on wood*

Going on 4 years without a front license plate. I've gotten out of many other tickets because of it, and would take a $54 tint or license plate ticket over speeding any day of the week. Just go to home depot and pick up some peices of aluminum and some self tapping screws and be done with it.
If your real anal drill underneath the bumper where it isn't visible and use wing nuts so you can easily remove it for car shows or photos.

we get TWO plates?!?!
ive been running without mine for a while. no one bothered me yet ::knock on wood::
but putting it in your window is not a good idea at all. you can get MORE tickets for that (obstruction of view). better to go without it.

most useless law in NJ ever. I drove for almost 5 years without the front plate and only got a ticket this past summer when state trooper on 280 was bored and decided to pick me out of thousands of cars to pull over. I see people with no front plates all day long, expired inspection, not driving in rain storms with lights on, talking on cell phones, its ridiculous that they get to pick and choose who to pull over and give BS tickets to.
Just put the plate on because eventually they will be in a bad mood and give you a ticket to stroke their egos.

NJ DMV (MVC) site does not have the code on it and I cant seem to find it but last time I saw this is not true. There were only 3 stipulations for front plates, Front of vehicle, clearly visible and not above a certian height? Left a lot of room for "wiggle" there was someone at E-town that had the plate mounted on the front air dam, he said he would get pulled over for it a lot so he carried a copy of the code with him and there was nothing an officer could say to dispute it. He showed me the copy

i ran my plate in my window for a month before inspection no problems. i've had it completely off for about 2 months now no problem and i spend 90% of my time driving through a town that has written tickets for 2mph over and called for backup when me and my friends got pulled over for razor scootering.

Well the car was dropped off at the body shop today. I'm having them put the black plastic camaro grill on the car and I'm going to order the decals from WS6store so camaro stands out. I specifically told the body shop to not put the license plate bracket on the car, so lets see how this turns out. The car will be done by friday so I'll post up pics of when its done.

That's just plain rude.
Cops by me are real cool as long as you are a local they won't ticket you.
