So while trying to repair what the last owner screwed up I decided to change the ignition lock cylinder since he broke the key off in it. I successfully got the old one out and installed the new one and now I can turn the key to the run and start position but i can't turn it back to the locked/off position so to remove the key. I am thinking that it has something to do with the shift interlock system, but I don't honestly know how it is operated on the GM columns. Anyone have an idea out there or wish to put in their two cents on this issue?

this happened to me a few weeks ago in my 94. Did you try driving it after? And shaking the gears (by this I mean shifting from P--->2 really quick with foot on brake). Basically when it happened to me I couldn't get back to off position fully so I did that and drove it around the block then turned it off and it popped right out. Silly Chevy.

I would but i dont think people can push it that fast since i have a half taken apart motor and no motor wiring harness

 Push it with the truck! No it has to be something really stupid, didn't the Blazer do the same thing though?

nope neither the blazer or the jimmy did this i have taken the columns apart on both for the wiper switch and the jimmy was stolen so i needed to replace the lock cylinder turn signal switch and the bezel that holds both

This problem started when he replaced it....the previous owner broke the key off in the ignition, so he replaced it.

Pop the shift knob off and see if the plastic piece inside the shift stick is stuck down. Happened to my 86 T/A.

there is a cable that runs from the shifter up to the column....trace that and see if its binding up at all.
