Got into a verbal scuffle with a manager last night...

So last night, I was craving a double whopper and decided to hit up my local burger king and get some grub. Went to the bank, withdrew $100 from the ATM and went to get my whopper. Pulled thru the drivethru, gave them my order, and proceeded to the window. I hand the kid (which happened to be of central american decent, most likely mexican) a twenty and noticed it was an old school $20 bill which I havent seen in a while... the mexican in the window looks at it, looks at it some more, holds it up to a light, looks at it even more, and you guessed it, just looks at it for an entire 45 seconds... then I see him take the $20 bill over to what appeared to be yet another mexican, which happened to be the manager... so im like WTF is going on here... theres another girl in the window, and yet again, she's mexican. I say outloud "Havent you guys ever seen an old $20 bill before?!" And she looks at me and throws a bunch of sluggish english words at me that I couldnt understand and says "It might be fake"... so I LOL'd (hence why I say i got $100 out of the bank, cuz thats where i got it from). So the kid walks over to me and says "We no accept this, it fake" ... so, before I even thought about cussing up a storm, I made sure my baggie was in sight... this way, I can show my anger without finding a used condom in my whopper deluxe, and I said (language and all) "Are you ****ing kidding me!" So I yank the $20 bill from him, turn on my interior lights and hold it up and notice that little security tape inside the bill, hand it back to him and said "Are you ****ing blind? It's real, do you not see the security tape in there"... so he shrugs his shoulders and the manager walks over and this is how the convo went...

Manager: "We no accept this dollar bill. You have another?"
Me: "That's not the ****ing point, I handed you a legit $20 bill that I JUST withdrew from an ATM machine"
Manager: "It no look real"
Me: "Were you living in America for at least 10 years?"
Manager: ***long pause***
Me (talking to kid who received my $20 the first time): "How about you, how long have you been living here??"
Mexican kid: ***long pause***
Me (talking to the girl) "How about you?!"
***Girl walks away***
Me: "Ok, so, before you call MY AMERICAN dollar fake, maybe you should learn what the current and recent AMERICAN dollars look like before you work at a cash register."
Manager: "We no argue with you. You have real $20?"
Me: "Call the cops down here so he can confirm it's real, and I better not have my ****ing sandwich cold either"
***Long Pause***
Me: Gimme back my money. Here's a CURRENT $20 bill before my sandwich gets cold cuz I really dont feel like waiting for a cop. Id rather call your manager and have you fired instead."
***Kid gives me change, and food while staying silent***



Moral of this story: I have nothing against spanish people, but when someone doesnt know that an old $20 bill isnt counterfeit, should not be working at a place that handles cash... I was so pissed off that I didnt even enjoy my ****ing sandwich....

Those pens don't mean anything. When I worked at the bank we used to make a game out of finding various pieces of cloth and paper and making them pass the pen test. You would be amazed, table cloth, note book paper, sample checks, toilet paper, and many more common materials can all pass as"currency" paper.

I worked at bank for three years..... only two or three bills were suspect. And the speaking English thing i believe that everyone should learn English if they want to live here period.

I think what he was getting at is that most immigrants learn English and it seems quite a lot of Spanish people do not when they come here. I have a big problem with illegal immigration as well as people not learning English when they come here. But I have a problem with it in all races not just Spanish. After reading the original post you can keep your cool much better than I can.
I had a similar experience at mcdonalds last week the night before I flew out to wisconsin to see my brother in the hospital with a brain tumor, so I was already heated.
Mind you my pops and my brother have both worked in and out of restaurents as managers including a GM at wendys and iv been their along the way helping them out as a kid untill now.
Well the ghetto thug at the window gave me an attitude after telling me to hold ona minute 3 times after trying to order each time for 5 minutes apart. Once he gave me that ghetto tude I let him have it cursing and all and telling him theirs 7 cars behind me and 4 just left because fo their poor service
His response was " I don curr i dont own this place"
I responded with the speel about how his manager would feel differently about that and he responded saying his manager was hearing it all and she dont care either.
Cops came harressed me and my buddy for cursing them off but after a few breif words calmed down and told me that I could express myself without cursing i told him these ghetto ****'s dont understand anything else. any way two ghetto hood rats at mcdonalds with no customer service skillz really urked me.

And to further your point (I think) this is all assuming that the people aren't making an attempt to English. They could be new to the country and are trying to learn. A good friend of mine teaches ESL and her classes are always PACKED with people.

If I were in their shoes, fresh to a country without knowing the language I'd probably speak my native language until I was up to speed as well.

That said, the rejection of the money was pure ******** and they should have been trained properly.

i came into this country through mexico when i was 5 with my mom and my two bros. we didnt want to come here ,we had to for survival . weve been here since 91 and my mom and dad still dont know english. my dad works 2 jobs and my mom took care of us and has tried to learn so many time . just cause some one doesnt know english doesnt mean they dont belong here. i hurts me when some one can be that stupid to say things like that. for those that feel that everyone should know english i say to think back to when ur family came to this country what they had to go through . and if u cant imagine that go on a trip somewhere where they dont even know what english is and try to even be there for 2 days with out going insane

i came into this country through mexico when i was 5 with my mom and my two bros. we didnt want to come here ,we had to for survival . weve been here since 91 and my mom and dad still dont know english. my dad works 2 jobs and my mom took care of us and has tried to learn so many time . just cause some one doesnt know english doesnt mean they dont belong here. i hurts me when some one can be that stupid to say things like that. for those that feel that everyone should know english i say to think back to when ur family came to this country what they had to go through . and if u cant imagine that go on a trip somewhere where they dont even know what english is and try to even be there for 2 days with out going insane

That's 17 years of hearing the English language my friend. My grandmother came to the country in 1982. She had no intent on speaking the language, And If I remember correct, by 1999 she spoke pretty good english just due to the exposure of the language. So for you to say that your parents still don't know english after 17 years, I don't think they are trying too hard. Now I'm not saying they don't belong here or any immigrant shouldn't be here because they don't know the language. As long as they're here LEGALLY, I could care less. And I'm with Justin as far as they shouldn't have a job that directly interacts with people (customers) if they can't speak the language.

alright first of all, you dont know me. ask anyone who KNOWS me and they will tell you i am the most non-racist person in the world. i hate everyone equally for that matter. ignorance and stupidity affects ANYONE of ANY age, race, religion, etc. etc. etc. I would be the first person to admit that EVERYONE is ignorant. except I prefer to educate myself on subjects before talking about them. and also not take other peoples words out of context.

when my family came to this country on the mayflower they primarily already knew english. every other immigrant that came to this country learned english, just so they could fit in and have a job. if i was going to another country i would DEFINITELY attempt to learn that regions language. or atleast have a good understanding of it. Im learning arabic right now so i can communicate with locals when I get to Iraq.

I'm a retail manager and i hate dealing with people who have little understanding of the English language. 99% of the time the people that can't speak a lick of English are very polite and respectful. I do my best to work with them and have no real problem doing so. The transactions usually go through flawlessly and we both go on our separate ways.

I start having a problem when I get a rude customer that attempts to argue with me in a form of terrible English that i just simply can't understand or I can't communicate to them clearly what I'm trying to say. This is where problems start and why i think it is highly useful for everyone to be able to communicate smoothly in English.

My mom came here from Brasil in the mid 60's right after Kennedy was assassinated. She was here as a nanny watching 3 young girls. She got a job....she learned the language. She got married. She was here LEGALLY. It wasn't until about 10 years ago that she actually got the nerve to really prove herself - she became a NATURALIZED CITIZEN (as in earning her citizenship)....and got a drivers license. In that order. Then she started volunteering for YEARS with the C.A.P. in her area (Md). So she's done her part and then some. More than I can say for others. It isn't hard to be here legally. It isn't that hard to learn Engrish. Just get it close to start with. Hell, Sesame Street is teaching our kids SPANISH....so is shows like Dora and Manny the builder (or whatever it is). The 'education' is out there.....we just need to realize that its OUR job to learn. Hell, I spent time in Japan, Korea, Iraq, and Brasil and learned some of the language when I was there. And I have friends that I made from Turkey that wanted me to visit. I'd try to learn some there too. Just open yourself to the experience.

And if you have planned to stay here in the U.S. - please do your 'job' and learn the language....and your best to be legalized.....and to become a 'citizen' as well......plenty of classes for that out there that are cheap.
