We'll looking to collect what we can to send to the soldiers that aren't going to be home for Christmas. "A little something from the NJFBOA members".
Items such as magazines, candy, Christmas cards, Batteries, calling cards are some of the items that have been suggested.
Anyone wanting to donate will certainly be appreciated. I'll work out collecting the items and getting them shipped.

Christmas Poem
TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.
I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.
NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.
WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.
SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.
I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
'SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY! COUNTRY, MY CORPS.'
THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTE D TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.
I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILEN T AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.
I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.'
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,!
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.'

Um, you might want to check out 'Adopt-A-Platoon.org' at http://www.adoptaplatoon.org/. This Group helps match people to either a Platoon to send Care Packages, or an individual Soldier to be a Pen Pal, and this goes on all year long. Give em a look see, they're always looking for help.

I'm up for it also! My best friend is serving in the Army in Iraq right now. He's in infantry with mortars, I just sent him some stuff the other day. I can get his shipping info if any other people would like to send stuff, I know him and his platoon would greatly appreciate it.

I'm in! I have been there myself a couple of holiday seasons. And the packages that people send really DO help moral! Watching for details.
Edit: also, a heads up.. If packages will be sent, they will need to be sent ASAP, because the shipping time to certain areas in Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi, etc. is weeks at best.

True that. Shipping to saudi(UAE) usually takes 6-10 days.

 Last time I was in ASSghanistan shipping took about 14-21 days, especially around the holidays.

Sorry for the delay folks!
BENCAR, thank you that link is great!
If you're not sure what to get, the Care Package Ideas tab on the Site Bencar post is full of items that won't hurt anyone’s wallet.
I secured a few of the boxes. They are 12x12x5.5 and can be up to 70Lbs and shipping cost is $10.95. So if anyone doesn't know what to get, you could always just chip in a few bucks towards shipping cost. I'll make sure whatever we collect gets used towards letting the soldiers know we are thinking about them!
If you can connect with other NJFBOA members in your area the Mods will work out the details to pick up what you collected. I work in Ewing but will travel a fair distance to get what you have. I believe Tim and Justin are going to be at the December meet this weekend so that would be a good opportunity to collect what we can as we plan to mail the package Monday 12/15.

I'll probably be your picker-upper. I'll be between Hackettstown and Woodbridge for a lot of December, so I can pick up a pretty wide radius

Think maybe you could get this together before next Tuesday night's dinner?
FYI:
A large group of us are Heading to Bordentown for Dinner at Mastori's next Tuesday ( See 2/9 Dinner thread in the Centeral section ). Anyone in the area should join us, and it would be a good time to collect whatever people have.
