OK kids, time for the final details to get this off the ground.

I need to know who is seriously interested in attending an NJFBOA Track Day at New Jersey Motorsports Park. This day will end up involving more than just our members and we are not going to be snobs and say f-bodies only.

The first group that spaces will be offered to is the membership of this club, bring any vehicle that passes a basic safety check along with your helmet and you are in.

The target date is Monday, June 15th. The date is a Monday simply because the economics of renting the facility for a weekend event are completely unrealistic.

The costs are estimated to be $250 per driver AT MOST. The costs will most likely come in under that, but we would rather warn everyone what the highest possible cost may be instead of surprising everyone later. As we work on sponsorship and such for this event, we will apply those funds to lowering the per driver cost of the event.

The day will consist of 5-6 lapping sessions per run group. Run groups will be decided based primarily on driver experience. There will also be professional instruction available all day. The instructors are a part of the entry price, no additional fees if you decide to take advantage of their help.

The target to fill the day is 50-55 driver slots. Not all of the slots will have to be filled from with in our membership, but we would obviously like to see as many of our members out there as possible

The day at the track will be run by a professional track day company with years of experience. They have a successful track record and just need to know if we have enough people interested to make this a reality.

Date: Monday, June 15th
Location: New Jersey Motorsports Park
Cost: $250/driver

VERY COOL! ubg is in, and having it on a Monday is a good idea. Less cost+long weekend= WIN!!!!

ubg will promote this on his site, and will get word out to his AMC cohorts. And ubg will also let his buddy Monteque J Monibags know. Monte races Porsches and could prolly fill a seat or 3...

This is already a massive response and we didn't event send the newsletter yet. After that goes out tomorrow I am sure we will have plenty of interest to move this into all systems go mode :)

Remember, NJFBOA Members get first shot at signing up. Once we have everything in writing and locked in we will announce it here first. So start planning now!!!

BTW, I already have a verbal agreement for a few door prizes at the track day :) We will work out how they will be given away.

Keep spreading the word kids!!! :drive:

As long as there isn't a schedule conflict, I'd be interested, probably my son as well. We won't know our actual schedules until after the first of the new year.

Yes, helmet will be required. I am working on a deal with a company to sponsor the club that may be able to help with this. Won't come together until after New Year most likely, if you can wait.

Sound's like a lot of fun. If I can ever get around to getting the heads/cam in my car I would like to go. If not maybe I can make it down to watch.

What do you need heads and cam for? If the car is running, show up. This isn't going to be in any way a competitive day, just lapping and laughs.

As of now the only requirement will be helmet and a safe car. It will be a general overview of the car safety, no loose stuff flying around, battery held down properly, brakes in good shape, windshield not about to cave in, good seat/safety belts......you get the idea.

As time draws closer we will have a write up on how to be sure your vehicle is properly prepared for a lapping day.

Keep spreading the word kids. It's going to be a great day :drive:

Cool.

If anyone has friends that are interested in attending, it may be a good idea to have them join the club and post up here. Since the slots available will be put out to members first and we are receiving such a positive response, it would be a shame to see your friends locked out because we ran out of slots.

Track officials not like your car or running in the rain? This ain't NASCAR, we don't have to run and hide because some water decided to fall from the sky.

Get your car ready to go and come on safe tires and we will rock it in any weather.

NJSPEEDER
12-16-2008, 12:09 PM
Passing will be courtesty/waive by only. This isn't a competition and we aren't going out there to risk anyone's car.

I don't think there are going to be any official lap times or tracking. There are systems available for you to track your laps and such from in the car if you are interested.

I wonder why they won't allow trux? I could see not allowing lifted 4 X 4s with big knobby tires or such, but trux like Mike's or say a Syclone or Typhoon are made to be able to take turns...

Even for novices, the cornering loads and G forces are easily high enough to pose a serious risk for SUVs, trucks and vehicles with a lot of mass and relatively high roll centers. That's why most groups and tracks do not allow them even in modified form.

Stock 4th Gen F-bodies have surprising amounts of body roll and brake dive on road courses- especially with OEM suspension and ride height. This isn't because they're bad cars, it's just a matter of the cornering forces acting on the relatively heavy mass of the car and the grip level of large sticky tires.

It's all about the physics.

Are there any restrictions on T-Top cars? Or is it just convertibles there worried about?

NJSPEEDER

The restrictions are just on soft top cars, your t-tops are in a solid frame, so you are good.

As long as there are some good straight aways I should be OK. I have no problem using the grass and killing some cones.

The link below is for anyone interested in getting an idea about the track configuration of the Lightning Circuit at NJMSP. It is an in-car track day video of a stock Miata. Notice that the car carries both a driver and instructor and still manages a good bit of speed and momentum. Considering the limited power of the stock Miata, this is a respectable lap.

Miatas also have a bolt on hardtop available. So the car could have either a roll bar or the hard top and be legal to run.

Lightning Raceway
The 1.9 mile Northern Circuit will be known as Lightning, this 10 corner circuit will be fast and challenging featuring some of the most interesting and dramatic corners and elevation changes in the park. The 20 acre paddock area will have a 4 acre skid pad and autocross area, as well as concession areas, timing towers and school and drivers meeting room facilities.

Now for verts does it need to be a 4 point bar or 6 point?

EchoMirage

probably just a 2pt rollbar. not a full cage

I'd do some homework. Never heard of or seen a 2pt rollbar? Does such a thing exist? That's a hoop with with no front/rear struts? Probably meant 3pt?

I just talked to the company that we are doing this with and they are going back and forth with all of the paperwork and such with the track still.

Once the date and the insurance and everything else is locked in we will be able to post all of the technical requirements for the event.

2 point would be what the old cobras have....and the miatas........i doubt they have anything like that for a 4 seat car

Pretty sure Cobras had 3pts....

I don't know what miata's had and if you are going to put a bar into a car, then you might as well install a bar that has at least 3pts, preferably 4 or more.

OK, got some clarifications.

Verts will need a roll bar. I am going to get the specifics and post them up.

Truck and SUV owners, sorry but we won't be able to allow them.

Correct me if I am wrong because I would like to come....
I can run a Lightning @180+ mph during an open road race or run at other road courses, but I can not @ NJMP where it will out handle/run 80% of the other cars?

PolarBear

I doubt it will out handle the cars coming to our session but yeah you cant bring trucks or SUV's

Stupid rule. My truck is very very far from a stock Lightning and is setup specifically to RR.

Jensend

It's true that some of the Lightnings are track worthy (several have run in the One Lap of America competitions), however, my guess is that NJMSP, like many other tracks, have insurance limitations that are established by their carriers. Insurance companies aren't interested in much beyond their own liability and tend to make broad generalizations to cover themselves.

NJSPEEDER

Stupid rule. My truck is very very far from a stock Lightning and is setup specifically to RR.

It is an insurance issue. There are events that are run by Lightning and TBSS clubs, perhaps one of them can offer you the opportunity you are seeking. Since we are running this event through another company, we are not able to speak to every insurance issue or split hairs to decide what does or doesn't qualify when it comes to allowing trucks.

yanniotis
01-23-2009, 09:56 AM
I understand. I just never had, nor heard of a problem running the Lightnings at any tracks before. The TBSS I have heard of a fewtracks not allowing them.
I would bring the GTA, but it is not ready nor will it be for a while.
