so the trans on my jeep is slowly taking a crap. it gets worse the hotter it gets. dropped the pan the other day and fluid is dark and smelled burnt, not to mention the shiny metal flakes in the pan. it still shifts but only when it wants to. i need this to be a reliable winter beater because i refuse to drive my z28 in this crap. so please help me out. it's a 94 grand cherokee laredo straight six auto awd. (not selectable 2wd) please let me know asap if you have or know of a trans.
thanks

ZJ automatics are notorious for blowing up, more often behind the 318 though.

All I could find on jeepforum.....shoot the guy an email, his PM box is always full.

The transfer case doesn't matter: 42RE: 4 spd. automatic transmission used in 1993 to 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokees with 4.0L engines.

That trans can be found in some other dodge trucks, not sure which years and models though.

I don't know if there were different bellhousings for them when used on other motors. Still learning the Jeep Tech. Try sending a PM to Ian here....he's a tech at a Jeep / Chrysler dealer and should be able to help ya.

justin, i fixed the trans problem by buying a new truck lol 94 zj just like mine with a freshly rebuilt trans. 1k miles on it. i should be good! oh and he said the reason these trans' go bad is they don't cool properly because of this stupid check valve in the cooler line that stops flow to allow it to heat up or something. sounds really stupid, this isn't the cooling system! haha so he says to just take the valve out and your good. ever heard of this?

I hadn't heard of it, but I'll certainly look into it and pass the word along if it checks out.

Post pics of the new truck in multimedia.
