...my 4 year old hand me down one is in need of a replacement. I got pulled over for the first time with it tonight. I was messing with a buddy(not racing!) and his radar dector was going off while mine didn't and the state trooper was able to get me. I got clocked doing 85 in 55(1 mile into the 55 zone) and another person was doing 89.The person doing 89 was not me nor my buddy, but some kid in a beat up neon. He got away and I was the one that got pulled over. After I get pulled over the cop goes to the front of the car and I don't have the plate on:sad:. So the cop goes to his car, radios all my info in, and comes back about 5 mins later. You figure out if I got the ticket or not...Btw, I'm 17, in my Z28, and had my exhaust cutout open when I went by the trooper.

dude vinnie that blows!!!!! as great as the car sounds, don't ride with the cut out open. statey's are hard no matter what so no surprise to me that you got a ticket. as for the radar, our cars are low to begin with. the dash is very low for most cars, i would recommend mounting it higher to the headliner. this will pick up radar easier and give it a clear shot for 360 degree monitoring. they don't get everything though and pacing will get you every time. live and learn. take my advice and slow the **** down ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! go to court and plead that **** down

The radar detector is mounted in the top driver side corner. He was shooting radar and I guess my radar detector doesn't pick up that band of laser or whatever. Btw, my PBA card saved my ass, I walked away with only a written warning. 30+ and no front plate might have been enough for me to loose my license, no matter what it would have cost me a **** load in tickets.

it depends actually. i can pick up radar before i see a car. sometimes its just a cop at an intersection you are traveling perpendicular to. usually on the parkway you have half a second to react so its pretty much pointless. who knows though, i never got a speeding ticket with mine. i don't haul absolute ass though.

Why were you doing 85 in a 55 zone in NJ? You need to learn to respect the priviledge to drive before you lose your license. 17 years old driving a Z28 at 85 mph is really dumb, especially this time of the year. That PBA card should not get you out of a 30+ over ticket! :-x

scott, the cut out is electric and was closed by the time the cop had me pulled over. also the reason i was going so fast was because the neon was up my ass. after i realized how fast i was going i got in the slow lane to let the neon pass me and thats when the cop had clocked me. btw, i do have respect for cops and fully expexted to atleast get ticketed for no front plate since all he was doing was his job.

i can see where he is coming from though, going over on the parkway especially in the 55 zones is REAL easy. i got tagged for an 86 in a 55. plead down to a 2 point ticket as opposed to a 5 point. needless to say i watch my speedometer every 30 seconds on the parkway, if you do 55 you get ran off the road

Yeah down at where the traffic lights come into play like exit 6 and 7 and such, the speed limit drops. I got clocked doing 83. let me off with a warning, but if your not paying attention and dont realize the limit drops, its pretty easy.

Just more of the same bullcrap where they take care of their own. I have gotten away with some stupid crap because I have a family member id badge and no other reason what so ever. I'm just saying they over look certain people doing certain things if you have a pba card most of the time. Some don't care what you show them. Still think they are all great people?

I've learned when to keep my mouth shut and when to play dumb and just be polite. It's a game to them just need to know how to play it.

Because cops use laser systems now, so radar detectors are virtually useless. It's illegal, but if you can find a laser jammer, you'll never get pulled over again. You can hide them in the headliner so it's hidden. Just sayin

And laser can't really be used in lousy weather, so not many cops around me use it at all.

Yup, and the bridge by the power plant, where its like a 35 or 45mph zone, psh, Ive never seen anyone do that speed on that bridge, especially out of staters goign to Wildwood or O.C., and every so often when I'm coming down that bridge, theres a S.T. sitting in the grass median waiting to tag ya coming over it. your so used to doing the 55-65 zones, you dont realize it.

I couldn't agree more. Back when I was 17 I always drove fast in my z until I learned that driving was a privilege and that I could seriously hurt someone with my vehicle. There is no need to be going 30+ the posted speed no matter who is driving behind you. I don't know the circumstances, but 30+ and a PBA card your not getting off with just a no front plate with me. Is it a family members card? If that's the case that officer would be receiving a call. Also IMO radar detectors can only hurt your chance of not receiving a summons..

I have a cobra radar detector. The thing sucks, it's better at detecting store alarms than anything. But you kind of get to know where the cops usually are in your town and normal driving routes. I try and blend into traffic, especially as a 20 year old kid in a loud f-body. In high school I racked up a total of 8 points, thinking I was the man because I would get pulled over constantly. Now I realize how stupid I was. I just use my radar to make sure I'm within the limit range now. All of that fine money could have went into something much better.

My freshman year at Willy P I was driving home on the Parkway in my BMW 735i. I got pulled over doing 103 in a 55 my radar never went off because the officer was behind a brick wall. When I got pulled over I refused to give him my pba card cuz I knew I was wrong. But luckily, when I went to court (woodbridge) my father (lawyer) talked the prosecuter into 50 in a 35. Back then, it was only an $80 fine. Can't complain about that. Lol. Don't speed like that anymore tho lol

Meh, you're 17, you will do things like this.
Doesnt matter if you are an ******* driver or someone who obeys teh law.
Im not one to talk. I clicked off 12 points in 6 months, and I know there are people in here worse then that. Doesnt make them a bad person or anything like that.

As far as radar detectors go, my old 6 band Cobra did well when I had it turned on, and I actually listened too it. Coming home from Indy this year, the Laser signal went right off, and I hit the brakes instantly. The cop actually pulled me over for doing 50 in a 65 and in the left lane. No tickets.

Back to getting this on topic...
I have noticed that most NJ Staties use the old X band guns? Everytime I go past one sitting on the road, X band beeps. And they usually leave it on all the time, so I would get warrnings over a mile away. I have noticed some K/Ka stuff, but have yet to see a Statie with a laser gun? Both times I was hit with laser, it was in Ohio.
Locals seem to use more K/Ka brand guns.

And speaking of which, my new detector I picked up worked great in the 2-3 weeks I had it in my 87, but now that its in the Caprice, it sends out laser signals all the time, on and off every 30 sec or so...dunno what that is about.

My radar detector is in the very top corner of the windshield, you can't see it from looking at the front of the car. The cop was on the passenger side the whole time and never really took a good look inside the car so I'm almost 100% sure he didn't know I had a radar detector. Also when I was pulled over it was still not going off. I got pulled over by a local cop in the summer and when I was pulled over he had left the radar gun on and my detector was pinned so idk if that means that this statie was shooting laser.

BS, he didn't learn anything because he got off without getting any tickets. :| 30 mph over the speed limit will get him or someone else killed. This is why our insurance in NJ is so high. You guys need to learn before you kill someone. And there is no reason to have a radar detector if you drive like a normal human being.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but your making this into an age argument. Did you forget about the other person in the neon that was clocked doing 89 and didn't get pulled over? I got pulled over because along with the other guy I was speeding, but I also was in a sports car.

It has nothing to do with age, but how people on this board don't know the laws. So the neon was doing 89 and he should have gotten a ticket as well. If you speed up to 30 over the limit just because somebody is coming up behind you, you obviously don't know the law. The missing front plate is another law as well as tint that everybody likes to illegally put on their cars. The Camaro is rated for towing so there's no safety issue with that unless you're towing 30+ mph over the speed limit. :knock: This isn't a complaint against just you, but everybody here who likes to drive around like maniacs. Just ask how many people here have already lost their license or damaged their car. Then, by coincidence, ask their age. You will see the obvious trend.

Nope, nothing hypocritical in what I said. There are quite a few people saying how stupid it is to do 30+ over the speed limit. That is the lesson that needs to be learned here. Even 85 in a 65 zone is way over the limit. And no, that boat weighs under 750 lbs so do some research. But that has nothing to do with people learning how to drive safely.

If you don't like the thread, ask one of the admins to delete the whole thing because it talks about illegal driving and radar detectors.

Umm...so now your saying that we're not aloud to talk about radar dectors on this board? If you even read my posts, I was doing 80 in the 65 zone going with traffic. When the neon had started to tailgate me I then got into the slow lane.

Vinnie, 85 in a 55 is definitely way too fast. I'll be the first to admit that I used to drive quite fast, but one speeding ticket several years ago changed that quickly.

You say that you were only 1 mile into the 55 zone....I dunno about your F-Body, but my lifted (and before you ask - completely legal) Jeep can slow down plenty over the course of a mile.

You also say that you were doing 80 in the left lane, then moved over when you saw the neon coming up behind you quickly because at a glance you thought it was a cop. So when did you speed up to 85?

I'm not saying that you are a bad person or anything, but if you are gonna get into something like this on a public forum and then toss some inconsistencies out there, you can pretty much expect this type of response.

Very true mike. We were not speeding as we were both just getting on the parkway. I had said that becasue that's the reason I suspected the neon was a cop making sure we were following the laws.

Listen man, im not tryin to be a dick but you just keep changing your story. First you were messin around with your friend..then you were JUST getting on the parkway...I haven't been to every entrance on the parkway but im pretty sure none of them enter on the left side with a speed limt of 85mph...

It was at 10:30 at night, there was traffic, but it was more like packs of cars and then openings in between.

Very true, I honestly did not know I was going that fast and there are normally no cops in that area so I planed on just coasting down.

It was exit 77 on the parkway. I had gotten on the parkway with the cutout open so ofcoarse my car was loud. My friend was in front of me in a mercury cougar and had gotten in the slow lane. There was a clearing in the traffic like I said before and had immediately gotten into the left lane(Yes, stupid of me), and I had figured that that type of driving had attracted a cops attention.

So you were in a pack of cars that was going 85 or you were catching the next pack of cars because you were going 85?

Face it, radar detector or not, you were going way too fast. Whether you realized your exact pace or not at the time, you were at fault. YOU are in charge of the speed you are going, not your friends, not some neon coming up fast, you and you alone.

You have been around here long enough to realize what happens when people try to make excuses for doing something that they know is wrong. If you don't want to hear any more about it, then just drop it.

I know. In one of my first few posts I had said that I had expected to receive a ticket of some sort even with the PBA card because I was breaking the law and still am with no front plate.

Anyway, anyone have any recommendations for an updated radar detector? Preferable from best buy because I have a gift card from there that i'd like to get rid of.

I have a beltronics STI and it works unbelievably well. I don't believe they sell them at best buy though and would probably recommend a passport 8500/9500. I used to have the 8500 and thats what my dad has and it also works great. When it comes to laser, usually if ur radar is going off and its pointed on you its already too late. Come summer I'm going to be investing in a laser jammer.

And for everyone giving him endless amounts of **** for speeding should probably look at themselves and everybody elses driving habits on the road. Roads like the GSP/287 if your within 5 mph of the speed limit ur getting flown by on both sides and practically getting forced off the road. yeah he was going abit fast, oh well. 85 is not 125, he wasn't racing and wasn't driving aggressively. From reading the posts in this thread it seems that everyone here is some kind of self righteous prius driver that never speeds and is always below or at the speed limit. And before nebody says nething, I'm not endorsing speeding or driving fast, but to act like you never break the speed limit is pretty ignorant. Most of the time going with the flow is 5-15mph over the limit.

Thanks for the input. I have to laugh that you brought up a Prius. On my way to Atco I got passed by one and I was doing 60 in a 50 behind an old lady. It doesn't matter what kind of car you drive, even tree huggers drive crazy! It's just that an F-body has the power to get you to that point that much faster. I bet the Prius was probably accelerating to pass me for a good 45 seconds because by the time he passed me he was doing 70+ mph in a 50.

Agreed that 80mph is the unofficial speed of the parkway.

sweetbmxrider
01-04-2009, 11:21 PM
i agree with everyone saying the parkway is a quick crowd for the most part. 10 over is pretty acceptable.

lets look at it this way shall we.

85 in a 55 is 30 over.
lets compare that to a 25 zone.

55/85 = 25/X

cross multiply

85x25=2125

55xX=2125

divide to find X

2125/55=38.63

X=39 rounded

so 85 in a 55 is equivalent to almost 40 in a 25!!!!! that is quite fast. sure there are a bunch of other factors and all that jazz but i was bored and felt like some math.

i have ridden in vinnie's car and he is a good driver, car sounds awesome with a cut out, and i'm pretty crappy at directions

Been driving 7 years now, never owned a radar detector and I've only received one speeding ticket within the first year I had my license. Its real easy to watch your speed, you don't need any electronics to tell you when its to late.

Even professional race car drivers who are "good drivers" crash. Doesnt matter how good a driver you are, theres still a potential of crashing, weither its driver error or mechanical failure.
