View Full Version : Anyone wanna go off roading in Wharton?

NJSPEEDER

There are a bunch of people from the Jeep Forum talking about meeting up at the Atison Ranger Station on the 18th to do a little wheeling.

Anyone interested in joining in the fun? Trails range from mild to messy and pretty much every big hole and tough part has a way to skip around it if it is too much for your truck.

i don't think anything would break, but there is a higher probability of it happening in 15 degree weather then 50 degree weather. And since the cost of the truck plus upgrades is in the ballpark of $55,000 and the truck isn't even a year old yet and it's my only vehicle it would make the most sense to wait. If i had a field truck that would be a different story. I never took my SS out in the extreme cold either.

Why wheel the truck anytime then? **** can break any time it wants, especially when taking it offroading. More than just some sandy road.

in 100 degree weather possibly, in the 50-80 range probably not. i wouldn't go offroading in a 95 degree day in july either.

when i take it, i don't plan in beating the piss out of it then either. i'm going to hit some light trails and get some nice pictures of the pines and the the truck and thats probably it. If i had an extra or older truck then it would be game on, but in a 10 month old truck it's not gonna happen thats just idiotic.

jimmyboy8301
01-16-2009, 11:29 AM

Then i wouldn't really recommend taking it to Wharton unless you stay on the main road, there are a few puddles. When it warms up, what looks like a nice watering hole usually tends to be 2'+ of water accompanied by the thickest foot or more of muddy awesomeness that really like to get things stuck. Innocent little areas can turn into broken axles/etc. Seen it, done it, just gotta be careful.

So what you are saying is your truck is all show & no go? oh look you got it wet and a little dirty! I bet you cried all the way home till you could wash that dirt off your pretty lifted "off-road" truck.

i'm sure the truck could handle it's own off-road just fine, especially with the 2500 drivetrain. but with getting married in 4 months, and looking at buying a house i'm not going to beat the hell out of my truck, and take a CHANCE that something will break and have to hold off buying a house because i have to fix the truck. I'd rather have you talk your BS and have my truck fine, then try to go balls to the wall to shut you up and wind up breaking something. Cause when push comes to shove, YOU ain't gonna pay the bill. When you spend $50Gs on a truck and want to bury it in mud, give me a call so I can bring a video camera and watch. I'm not against getting the truck dirty and having some fun, but i'm not putting the truck in mud up to the bumper.

I beg to differ on things always breaking in this cold weather. I went out new years day and it was just as cold as it will be on sunday and everyone that went and did it smart didn't break anything. Plain and simple, Don't be a smart a** and try to break stuff.

On another note the trails at Wharton can get small so if you like your paint job to stay flawless then i wouldn't recommend going

that is true, playing it smart and not show boating will play a big part in not breaking stuff. on the truck forums, i know that in the severe cold a lot more guys are breaking parts but who knows how they are driving them. i'm gonna get down there soon and do some poking around and see what it's like. there a lot of pictures and video's i've seen and i definitely want to check it out. i guess i'll decide how far to push it once i get there and see how the day goes.

rolling up and down trails, and goin through some mud wont do anything......

its the hitting rocks or trees with cold metal and plastic...that will break parts.

if you take it easy and stick to the wider trails, the trucks would be fine

The ground is still frozen solid. The 1-3ft of mud below some of those holes are what's tricky.

your stock height ram 2500 probably sits only 1-2" lower than my truck if that though lol. you have a dodge plus a 2500 remember that. chevy's sit lower especially 1/2 tons. it took me 6" to clear 35's that you can probably clear stock.

honestly any 3/4 ton truck can. chevys 3/4 ton's need some TB crank to do it though. so that dodge is right in my ballpark size wise.

I think we got slowed down a whole lot more by that one kid that got stuck 4 or 5 times. lol

I have a feeling it won't be long before there is another group heading down.

Before I waste my time would a '99 2DR Explorer Sport make it? Its narrow enough to fit in a Heep pass but with the IFS is it worth trying? While I dont want to destroy my DD I do want to try its 4wd CAPS. Id hope someone there could winch me to a towing area and Id use my 3rd gen for DD'ing. I just want to wheel my Sport...

I've never been offroad in the pines, are there any obstacles on the trail like trees and rocks to go over/around or is it just deep puddles? And yeah, icy conditions aren't the best to go 4 wheeling in.

I will go when ever, all i got to say is thanks to that kid that got stuck 5 times. Because of him i need to go buy a new tow strap. Next time i am leaving him in there and throwing mud on top of him to bury him alive. LOL

Yeah man bring out the explorer there are ways to get around the harsher stuff if you don't want to risk it. Bad64chevelle will pull you out if you get stuck and when he gets stuck a little nissan truck will pull him out.

Well that is because everyone else there was smart enough to know not to go into there. It was obvious that you were going to get stuck even before you even started to go in.

When I do something I try to go all out. My Exploder might have a monitker but it has the 230HP 230TQ SoHICK motor and it will mow through a lot of muck. Im just leery cause I know Ill wheel it to death. If I get a tow to the road AAA takes care of the rest, heh.

Sounds like you "Kids" had some fun and Id like to join next time. And Im holding 64 to his post. :) I will break ****.
