Really, really hurt when they are coming in sideways.

Anyone else have theirs taken out? How painful can I expect it to be? And how long can one hold out on getting them taken out?

Taking them out is not painful, coming off the meds is...

I had all 4 taken out at once. It really depends from person to person and how deep they are. It took me about 2 weeks before I was back to normal which is about average recovery. I would get then taken out sooner because they hurt more if they are bigger/deeper.

I didn't have a lot of pain with mine. They were so screwed up that they messed up the nerves, so I got lucky. I just had swelling issues for several weeks.

I had x-rays done on it a month ago and the dentist said they are coming in impacted. (Sideways toward teeth) Me, being the dumb ass that I am, said I'll wait till after spring semester to have them taken out cause they didn't hurt at the time.
Now, I hate myself.

I have two that are completely impacted and two that have just barely poked through my gum and stopped. No pain yet, but the oral surgeon says all 4 need to come out before too much longer.....

As someone who's had them removed on separate occasions, I definitely recommend having them all yanked at once if they have access. The recovery takes longer each time if they spread them out. I had two pulled after my senior year of high school, and they weren't too bad. I had novocain and nitrous so I was awake for the surgery, and remember laughing because I could see them pulling the stitches but couldn't feel anything, and I was fine in a day or two. Then I had another one removed a year later (a little more painful), and the last one pulled during Spring Break of my final semester at Willy P. That one was the worst; didn't stop bleeding for almost 3 days, and hurt like a sonuvabitch afterwards. I didn't take any pain meds except for Advil, because I'm a G like that. :)

The surgery isn't bad. The after effects, well, it could go either way.

Good luck.

I had all 4 removed at once. They knocked me out, woke up with gauze in my mouth and took perks for the rest of that day and the next. Wasn't too bad though, all I could eat was soup for a few days and slowly introduced solid foods lol I had to give an oral presentation on Cost Accounting which wasn't fun due to the soreness but luckily I never had any swelling.

i had tehm all done, all 4 impacted. was only a few day recovery, had to eat mushy foods for a while though. i ended up having a dry socket, now THAT was the worst pain of my life. i think its an exposed nerve or something. even the pain killers wouldn't numb that pain. she had to put some herbal packing in the hole to make it go away.

^Well, mine still hurt. I've decided to wait until spring break to get them out. (2 more weeks)

yeah what everyone else said...get all 4 pulled at once, try to be knocked out while they do it. recovery time depends...mine took like two weeks, they were pretty deep in there because i waited a while. definately the sooner the better.

i remember waking up in the middle and hearing cracking in my jaw but felt absolutely nothing, and i remember asking the hot nurse for the teeth they pulled so i can give them to the tooth fairy for some cash.

i do not remember the car ride home. ice ALOT also if you dont want to look like you are carrying grapefruits in your cheeks.
