Cant sleep, so its time for the military channel's lists of greatest wepons. They are talking about the greatest fighters.
Can someone tell me why the F-117 is still considered a fighter plane? Its really just a neat-o plane. Its more of a marvel of technology then anything else. It has no gun, cannot go supersonic, no air to air abilities, and carries two bombs? If anything, its like a concept car. Debuts cool technology that will hopefully be used in future models. Its stealth technologies are obsolete now with aircraft using smoother surfaces and not jagged sharp lines to deflect radar.

Before I was a car nut, I was a plane nut. What is your favorite fighter plane?

Outside of the F22, the F/A-18 Superhornets are hawt!!
I also like the clean and sleek lines of the F-86 Saber. Id love to have one if I was a multi billionare.

As far as the F-117 goes, the F designation was mainly added to keep it's true role a bit more hidden. Your right it isnt much of a fighter, it would be more realistic if it was called the F/A or just A. They were first used in Grenada, but didnt go public until Desert storm. EIther way it dosent matter much anymore as most of them are retired and in moth balls. I think a couple are still flying doing R&D work.

The Raptor is nice and so is the SuperBug, but I am into warbirds. I love the P-40's specifically the early models.

1. Looks like Concorde  - no go.
2. The top speed of Vakyrie doesn't even match the cruising speed of the Blackbird.

But anyways different strokes for different folks. Neither of them are fighter planes though

I thought the XB was supposed to eclipse the speeds on the SR? That is, until they decided to blow up and all....

In 1966 XB-70 reached Mach 3.06 and flew at Mach 3 for 32 minutes...
Blackbirds cruising speed was Mach 3.2.

I'd say the F-14. Only because it was used as a true interceptor. It can be armed with ground attack stuff but it's role was simply Air to Air.

The Valkyrie was designed as a high speed bomber. The SR-71/A-12 was a recon aircraft. None of the Valkyries blew up. One is on display at the NMUSAF in Dayton OH, the other was destroyed during a a mid air collision with an F-104. The F-104 was flying a bit too close in formation and lost control because of a vortex coming off of the XB-70's wing.

I agree. When somebody says "fighter" I think F-14.

SR-71 is awesome but it's no fighter.

Anybody ever go to the Udvar-Hazy museum in Dulles, VA? Coooooool stuff there. Like an SR-71, and the Enola Gay.

SR-71 was supposed to be a fighter plane for the CIA.

SR-71 is a great plane, but not a fighter.

Mig 29 always looked cool to me, but the F14 and F15 were great fighter interceptors. I love the F14's long distance Pheonix air to air missle.

I also have a soft spot for the A-6...

From working on the F14,FA 18, and F4 in the navy I would say the best is the F14. It is the fastest and can carry the Pheonix missile!! The coolest thing is seeing a F14 passing between a Aircraft carrier and a Destroyer while only 50 feet off the water!! Another cool thing is seeing a Tomcat pass by the ship at over 1500 mph!! Simply amazing!!

Edit: The game was called jane's USNF 97. It is probably still worth checking out i guess.

quite serious! remember google is freind of the uniformed The Lockheed SR-71 was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed A-12 and YF-12A aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. The SR-71 was unofficially named the Blackbird, and called the Habu by its crews. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts. A defensive feature of the aircraft was its high speed and operating altitude, whereby, if a surface-to-air missile launch were detected, standard evasive action was simply to accelerate. The SR-71 line was in service from 1964 to 1998, with 12 of the 32 aircraft being destroyed in accidents, though none were lost to enemy action http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SR-71_Blackbird#Specifications_.28SR-71A.29 find where it says its a fighter or it has any weapons systems so again yes in serious, and yes im right

a lot of this information is good I would like to post this from a website that is considered IMO to be a more credible source than widipedia.

"The SR-71 was designed by a team of Lockheed personnel led by Clarence "Kelly" Johnson, at that time vice president of the company's Advanced Development Projects, known as the "Skunk Works." The first version, a CIA reconnaissance aircraft that first flew in April 1962 was called the A-11. Upon retrofitting with J-58 engine, it was designated the A-12. An interceptor version was developed in 1963 under the designation YF-12A. A USAF reconnaissance variant, called the SR-71, was first flown in 1964. The A-12 and SR-71 designs included leading and trailing edges made of high-temperature fiberglass-asbestos laminates which among other features contributed to their reduced radar signature. Its existence was publicly announced by President Lyndon Johnson on Feb. 29, 1964, when he announced that an SR-71 had flown at sustained speeds of over 2000 mph during tests at Edwards, Calif."

Thank you for the great information on the SR-71. I personally find this a/c to be one of the more amazing jets to fly the air.

I think that this airframe has many advantages that each branch will be able to take advantage of. Each Airframe could be configured based on branch requirements. It is similar to F-22 but with joint services requirements in mind.
