I have been toying around with the idea of getting one of those car battery jump starters that you plug into your cig lighter and it charged a dead battery. Does anyone own one or have experience with them? Is there a certain voltage needed for LS1 engines?
I appreciate it if anyone could recommend good manufacturers or models. I am not really interested in the jumper cables at all. Just the plug in jump starter.

there is nothing better than going right to the battery terminals themselves. if u ave all day to wait, those cigarette lighter chargers will eventually work. even though ur not interested, get a jump pack box if u get anything.

yeah just use your head when picking out a brand. the cheaper it is, the cheaper it will work. you get what you pay for in tools

You really shouldn't start the car through cig lighter. I can see you burning the wires doing that. but what I was using the cig lighter plug for is to change the battery in the car so the radio wouldn't ask for a code(anti theft radios).
Eppy's tools got some nice once for decent price. I've been using one at work for a year with 0 problems. and the jump box was there for another year before I got there.

This thread brings up a good point. I have had many of these chargers from cheap to expensive and they all work like crap. It's cheaper to bring the battery to your neighborhood service station for a full charge. Maybe someone can elaborate on whats the proper way to store a car for the winter. Somebody had told me just disconnect the negative and leave it. Reconnect after the winter. Any tips would be appreciated. Both my cars are now sitting with dead batteries for the fourth year in a row. And yes i did try trickle charges. I bought the schumacher one. Useless!

^^most people like the battery tender product. I'm still waiting for summit to ship mine.
How about jump boxes? Anyone have one? Good/bad?

I have noticed the cheaper ones with the air compressor and flashlight don't last or power much of anything. I got a "Solar" from pepboys a few years ago, and its still charging strong. It will start my 86 with no battery.
