Cliff notes of tech's big scandal right now with "Internet Brands?"

red97z

LS1tech was sold in 2007 to Internet Brands, like the InBev of beverage companies, but for automotive websites and various forums. They gave the owners, psj and nb 2 years to still have their hands in the site, then they were out. Well, that 2 years is up, and NB has started a new site, planetlsx.com using the member database from seatstaysup, not the ls1tech.com database. Internet Brands is filing legal action against them for this, although they didnt use the ls1tech member list for their new site. from what I understand that is what is going on, and this has caused many longtime members and moderators to boycott the site.

Wow....didn't realize that they were only keeping nineball and PSJ around for 2 years. Just based on a quick look at the Racer's Lounge on LS1Tech, I think things there will be getting much quieter soon. NB and PSJ both have a huge following, and I'm sure a lot of people will jump to PLSX and not look back save for the occasional search through old tech threads.

Of course, LS1Tech isn't going to be closing it's doors anytime soon - there will still be plenty of action there.

The biggest problem with Tech is the search is in utter chaos. Which in my opinion was the best part of the site. If you wanted to know how a certain mod i.e (header swap, intake install) peformed or the best way to do the job, Tech was great for that.

I'd imagine a couple million. Considering the garage that PSJ and Nine ball have.

And if you are a member of Ls1tech, you are automatically a member of ssu!

Sounds like the NYMEX v. Intercontinental Exchange inc. .. well a little

Wait, so the owners of LS1tech sell it, and then two years later when its official, start up another site and everyone leaves tech to join? Doesn't seem very ethical at all....

no.... if you joined ssu or ls1tech in the last 2 years (post IB purchasing tech) than you wouldn't automatically be on both because they didn't sell ssu.

but that is why IB is suing nineball and psj

Are they claiming that the database is copyrightable material?

LTb1ow
03-22-2009, 02:57 PM
Prob. I would be pissed if I bought a company and then all the employees and contracts left to go join the same boss but in a different building...

Well they are not paid (not employees or IC's) so they are free to go whenever they please, so are the people. If they stooped copying the database to ssu after they sold the site to IB than I think they will fail (IB suit that is). Plus a database is not always copyrightable.

Granted but the members and mods of a site dictate how well the site gets sponsored and in turn makes money.

True, but you can't make them stay.

Were they suppose to leave after a certain period of time, after the take over? Or did they just decided to leave at the same time?

PSJ and Nineball agreed to stay on for 2 years to help transfer ownership. The 2 years ended last week, thus, all of the departures.

Tru2Chevy

Internet Brands bought LS1Tech in the spring of 2007, and in their purchase agreement NineBall and ProStockJohn were going to stay on as forum administrators for 2 years, then they would be removed from their administrator positions. When IB bought LS1Tech (along with it's sister sites PerfomanceTrucks.net, Mod Motor Tech, and Modern Hemi) they either didn't want Seat Stays Up, or agreed to let NineBall and PSJ keep that forum for themselves. Before the sale to IB, the user databases of all 5 of these sites were the same. If you registered on one of these sites, your username and password would work on all of them.

What NineBall and PSJ did was take a backup of the userlist from SeatStaysUp that was taken just before the sale to IB, and use it on their new forum, PlanetLSX.

As far as what was written in the contract of the sale, we can only speculate, but if IB didn't have anything in the contract regarding "ownership" of the database in use on SeatStaysUp, I don't think they have any legal grounds to stand on here.

Of course, IB owns close to 100 automotive sites (along with tons of others, including vBulletin), so I would imagine that they have a pretty good contract developed by now.....but I guess we'll wait and see.

Wow, very ugly indeed.
When AutoForums bought GMI, they were more then happy to leave us be and only support us with technical problems. They have been great so far, have not forced anyone out, or caused any problems. I do remember when we came out with the news, the regular base of people paniced and started losing thier mind, but then settled down.
So far, no problems and in fact have helped us improve our relationship and patch up problems with GM.

I honestly don't think a lot of people know about it. All of the good bye threads and other cancer of LS1tech is in the racer's lounge. I didn't know about it until this thread. The new Admin IB Adrian is doing a pretty good job of deleting those good bye threads and it will probably take a while for every1 to figure out what's going on.

ehh, unlike the Lt1, the Ls1 was an all new design and all of the newer engines are based off of the LS1. Ls1 is still a very popular motor, yes, there are better engines out there(LS3). But like I said, any Lt1 is free to have a shot at my car. Instead of all these internet jokes, lets see what everyone has.

The same search is on Corvette Forum, in fact I think IB bought them too. I was searching for a thread I made selling F45 shocks and it wouldn't come up in search, same with Tech, apparently it takes a few WEEKS for the thread to come up in search. I don't know a damn thing about databases but I would assume it's a setting IB has control of.
