ok guys i cam across this cam and i was wondring if anyone has anything to say about it. it would be used with a set of 243s on my 98z

GM ASA Cam 226/236 .525"/.525" 110 LSA

seems like middle of the road spec raitings there getting towards the higher end of things. id still upgrade the rods and springs doing any type of cam work on a ls motor. our springs are weak stock, especially going with a bigger cam and larger lift



edit: if you already have the 243 heads then id use them, just beef em up a bit.

That's definately a good middle of the road cam, but keep im ind the 98's have the weak connecting rod bolts so if you do a head/cam swap you may be asking for trouble if you don't do some bottom end work. The stock 243 (LS6) springs will be able to handle that cam no problem but if you have the money a good set of double springs, titanium retainers etc would be smart.

I wouldnt trust a cam that big with the LS6 springs...

ive been reading up on that cam on ls1tech and guys are saying they love it and no one is having any problems with the ls6 springs. but i might order a better set. im going to be buying the gm asa cam today

Also make sure you order a timing chain, oil pump and pushrods too.

i know i need 7.425 pushrods. do i need a new chain and pump being my motor has 11k on it

To me it looks like it was over spec'd in duration to compensate for the smaller lift. It will work well with stock 243 heads, and ls6 springs are good to 0.55" lift.

I personally think there are better cams out there, and I would run beefier springs just to be safe.

that is a pretty small cam with a big choppy idle. well its not that small, the lift isnt even that much honestly. but that LSA will make it shake like a mofo.

go a little longer on the duration 23X-23X and a higher LSA with stock 243 heads. or get the heads ported too for more gain.

just to be safe go with a double roller chain and an LS6 pump.

edit nevermind i read those specs too fast. i couldve sworn it was a 22x-22x....should be a pretty mean cam....but why such a low LSA?

well i just sent the payment for the cam on ls1tech so ill be ordering my gaskets and what not in the next day or so. maybe ill even have the heads and cam installed and car tuned before the april meet

yea you and me both doug. the guys on tech were saying they are getting like 20 to 23mpg with the m6 also so thats a plus

I think the LSA is so low because the lift is small. In order to compensate for the low lift they gave it more duration and a lower LSA so it screams up top.

I just think it is undersized for being top end cam. Looks like it was developed for those who want the choppy noise and low valvetrain risk.

It also has a large gap between the intake and exhaust duration. Looks like more of a nitrous cam.

i have a buddy running 11.99's on a stock motor and bottom end. only thing he did was beef up the heads a bit with double springs, rods and keepers.


the timing chain i wouldnt even bother with on that cam. above mentioned car has a stock chain and the cam he's running is a ms3

And you can go overkill on springs, just food for thought. Too much seat pressure will kill your cam lobes or lifters real fast.

If he is running 11.99 on an cam only MS3... he is definitly doing something wrong.

Chain is always as perventive maint.

it does seem like what kirk was saying, a good cam that will make some power, especially with 243 heads, but wont hurt the valve train too much. and have a decent choppy idle as well. definitely get some nice springs...i think ls6 springs would be fine for your application, but go with titanium locks, and the double roller is piece of mind, so you dont wind up having to replace bent valves and repair the heads.

stock 10 bolt. cant launch without worrying about breakages.

autos also baby the rear while an m6 puts a lot of stress on it

He is not necessarily doing something wrong, just a mis-matched setup. Stock heads cannot keep up with a cam that is designed to rev to almost 7k for peak power.

Emolineax, Get the ls2 timing chain, its cheap and provides the extra insurance. Also, do you have headers? Its not listed in your sig...I think its strange that you opted for an split pattern, heavily exhaust biased cam without having full exhaust.

I am saying a cam with a lot of exhaust duration and smaller amount of overlap will be more beneficial to nitrous and or a free flowing exhaust.

All cams will have some benefit from a more free flowing exhaust and nitrous. Saying that this cam will benefit is like saying more horspower will improve acceleration..yes, duh. and this cam has 11* overlap, which is on the larger scale for cams.

i didnt want to go to big of a cam just something a little better than stock. and i found it for a great price. i dont really have any goals for my z just want to mod it a little to give it some more power. was going to drag race it alot but i changed my mind. ill take it to the track every now and again though.

im going to be buying long tubes and an intake manifold in the next week or so before i do the swap. i dont plan on doing that stuff twice lol

I noticed in the WTB section you are looking for headers w/Air and EGR. I suggest that you get the race version, becuase you will most likely delete all that crap when you do the install. And since you will be getting a tune for the cam, it would be easy to delete the air and egr.
