My first car was this 88 Camaro 2.8Lv6 auto hardtop. It was in really nice shape, fresh paint and all, and that's when the inevitable happened, someone ran a light and totaled it...

Before..

After...

Because it was totaled by the insurance company, and I found the LT1 Trans Am I had anyway, I gave it away to my neighbor who owns a junkyard for free (after selling the torque thrust rims). His plans were to drop in the engine from a silverado 454ss that they had on the lot, and take the front clip from a berlinetta they had also. Well, a few years later all he managed was to remove the front clip and engine/drivetrain from my camaro and it ended there. He recently sold the 454ss and now the car just sits.

My plan is to talk him into giving me the car back. He did get it from me for free, and he obviously has lost interest. It's not like he would make any money off it anyway. That car was awesome and I have a lot of memories in it. I wanted to buy it back and put a lt1 or ls1 with a t56. I don't know if it's worth trying, or waiting a year or two and just buying another fourth gen down the road. What advice can you guys give me? I kinda want a project car for a learning opportunity, but if it would be hugely expensive or complicated it wouldn't make any sense.

Frame damage?
Your definitely looking at a new bumper, hood and fender, but the frame is going to be the important thing. And, you're going to have to go through a lot of trouble with the DMV to get the car legally back on the road.

That was a nice looking car! I would def try and get it back for a project. Even if you just do a regular sbc swap with a T56 it will be totally worth it. From the looks of the damage all you're looking at is a header panel, bumper/chin spoiler, fender, and a hood.

do it man!!! it looks feasible assuming the frame wasnt all jacked up...

insurance shouldn't be too bad, my car was totaled too and the guy I bought it from didn't sell it to the insurance company so it was still in his name. Since he was able to give it to his neighbor I'm assuming it's the same situation.

EDIT: Since the car is more than 8 years old the title doesn't get changed. When you put it back on the road if you have collision on it then they may want to check it out.

I'm still sentimental about the third gen I sent to the boneyard with a thrown rod. I plan on getting another someday. I'd go for it.
