People break them, blow them up, sheer teeth, blow the posi, strip the axles...what have you.
But this afternoon, I set out to fight with the 10 bolt in the back of my 87. What a biiiitch. It sucks not having a lift....really sucks.
Somewhere between trying to undo the brake fittings and trying to detach the brake cables, I started to sing songs in different accents....
Then when I realized I didnt jack the car high enough to get the rear end out, I broke out into laughter....
Anyway, 10 bolts down and out from under the car. Hawk HPS pads were deleverd today, rotors are here, brake lines are en route...hope to have them by Friday/Saturday.
Id like to put the 9 bolt and aluminum ds in, and then take it to the track soon.
Oh yeah...need to buy a swaybar link. Probably do two of them....
Anyway, just had to share my story with everyone. Im coverd in just about every automotive fluid save antifreeze.

Sounds fun! i woulda helped ya. What ratio is in the new axle? I never had a problem cranking 350hp or so through my monte carlos axle and it never made a sound. And what is the 9 bolt from exactly? isnt that the turbo trans am rear?

Monte's have the 8.5's I belive. Fbodies get a 7.5 or 7.65?
9 bolts were in a few fbodies. Made by Borg-Warner, and it came from Holden.
My 9 bolt has PBR calipers and I belive the 3.27 ratio. I have to fill'er up too. Might have to pick up some Royal Purple at work.

you didn't think the 7.5 10 bolt would last behind the 305?

No, I just had a 9 bolt in my garage for 5 years now, with better gears and rear disk brakes.
9 bolts are marginally stronger then 10 bolts, but this was more in line with replacing the 2.73/drum posi 10 bolt w/ bent axle with the 3.27 disk posi 9 bolt.

All Monte Carlos came from GM with the 7.5 / 7.625 10 bolt (same rear, the ring gear grew slightly in size in the mid 80s). The only G-Bodys that got the 8.5 were the Turbo Buicks and (some?) 442s.

yeah, factory 4 link too! i welded my links up, helped with wheel hop a good bit. I wish i had a digital camera back then. Oh well! I was planning on running a dana rear or a ford 8.8. Put a 350 in your car already! i had a good bit of trouble keeping up with you the other night in the formula lol. You have to do me a favor, race me in the 924 after you get a new time slip. I want to compare

Yeah...I think I should just yank it out of the Caprice, take the spindles for the 72 for a brake upgrade there, sell the rear to some Caprice guy looking for an upgrade over the 3.08's, and then scrap the rest of the car to the junkyard.

Mmm...Im debating on buying a girdle for it. I think I saw it on 9bolt.com...

I dont like the idea of running a car that is already impossible to get parts for. I trust the car with my life but i dont know about quarter miling it. The 924 will launch its ass off too, esp for a 4 cylinder. That would prob tempt me a little too far

beating a car up on the street is worse than making a pass at the track.

I dont beat it up on the street either...just occasional full throttle runs for a couple seconds at most. Trust me i take care of the car ive had it for 2 years and it still runs and drive exactly the same as when i got it

Yup, reminds me of my rear end swap. But ours actually went quite smoothly. Over at Tim's house and there were probably 10 people there helping and of course a case of Amstel. Ahh.... F-Body Memories...
