ive been thinking about buying a rebuilt motor from like jasper or marshall or one of the like, and i was curious how much shop labor would be required for a exact replacement to be swapped in. just trying to figure in how much the labor would cost on top of the motor costs. any ideas? its a 3.4 if that helps.

also, get the jasper 'install' kit did a few at work... comes with all the little **** you'd need.

I put a jasper motor in my TA. Only complaint I have was on the cam. 87 blocks were supposed to have roller cams but I guess to save themselves money they threw a regular flat tappet cam into a roller block. Other than that it runs great.

x2 on the install kit if you go jasper. They give you everything you need to do the install. Plugs, wires (cap rotor) belts, hoses, air cleaner, pcv valve and all the gaskets

its runs fine for now, its just got 188k miles and i want to keep the car and fix it up to mint condition, and i dont know what i am going to do engine / mod wise, especially because i am getting the new camaro when i graduate and i think im getting an ss. right now its leaking coolant and i have no clue where from... its been going on for a while and bars stop leak worked for a while but now that its getting warmer out the engine is running warmer and the leak stuff is turning to liquid again and just leaking out. ive been tossing the idea around of replacing the motor just as a piece of mind thing anyway, and i figure that taking it to a shop is going to cost at least 6 or 700 at least. so i know i can get a remanufactured for $1500 + $375 core i was just wondering what the cost would be to have a shop replace the motor

No barrs! Find out where it is leaking from. Could be simple as a water pump. And a new engine does not come with a new pump or hoses!

IMO just maintain it until your new car arrives.

well, i have been, but i plan on keeping this car as well, i just havent decided if i wanted to do a v8 swap or keep the 6 in

but yea, i thought it was the water pump and had that replaced... i can kinda give a description of where its coming from... it almost has me worried that its the timing cover gasket... from what i can see the coolant flows through this to get to the water pump?

its dripping down the face of the block more on the passenger side.. and it looks like its coming out right above the freeze plug... and if you look at this diagram, the passage looks like it is right above the timing cover gasket... thats my 2 cents, but i dont even know if im right in this guess... hell it could even be a freeze plug, whats the easiest way of telling?

how much was it to fix? i am almost positive thats where it is coming from, if its nice this weekend maybe ill try the pressure test

how long did it take you? how much more work was it than the waterpump? i replaced that myself before

95 3.4 camaro, book time on a waterpump is 2.5. timing cover gasket is 7.5, 7.9 with a/c

i don't really know why, i guess the crank pulley can be a biotch. i don't really recall it too much but didn't seem that bad. just unbolting and bolting for the most part. if you are there, you might consider replacing the timing components. you need pullers for that though and have to have the timing marks lined up. i but bubba could do this with his eyes closed, he's pretty good with 3.4's
