Did you wait too long to apply?

Did you wait too long to apply?
I wanted to live in the dorms so I could continue to meet new people.
Rutgers policy on on-campus housing is lottery numbers. Apply for one, then apply for a dorm. Seniority is given. So it doesn't matter when you apply.
My lottery number for somehow in the 7000s. The cut off for double dorms (the lowest there is) was 5000.
That option, gone. Could have applied for hotel living, but I didn't. I decided to look for a house.
Next problem, after the lottery process, was tough to find friends who didn't have housing already.
Continue getting boned. Then, a friend offers to let me live in his apartment. We'd split a room.
I ask him about the lease info today, and he replies that him and the other roommate decided that they each wanted a single and that I would not be living with them.
Called a kid that I worked with tonight to discuss getting a apartment together, as we have done before. He informs me that if I had called a day eariler, we would have had a deal.
So now, being almost totally boned, I applied for hotel housing. I get an email saying that the hotels are filled up at the moment. If something changes, they'll let me know. (Along with the 1000 or so other kids on the list probably.)

That's the full story.

craigslist has cheap rooms that people sublet to people in situations just like you. i had a setup like that about a year ago...renting a room and sharing a house with 2 of my peers sharing a common kitchen/bathrooms/living room.

it worked out well. if i recall right it was like 500 a month all utilities inclued with an option to pay weekly. worked out well

I got shafted like that one year and had to randomly apply for some off campus housing and got lucky by getting hooked up with a couple of guys who had a friend go on co-op at the last minute. It's early so I wouldn't worry too much yet. Get on whatever list you can right now for some form of housing so you'll be first to get notified even if it takes until late summer.

Checked. Its mostly summer sublets, Grad students looking to fill houses, places that aren't in my price range, or in streets I wouldn't live on if you paid me.

Going to try to talk to the friends I was supposed to live with and see if I can reason with them. I understand their reasons for wanting a single but their timing in telling me pretty much sucks.

which streets? I lived on Huntington, and that whole area right off college ave by the library was ALL college kids. Very good BBQs too :)

Suydam, Livingston ave, Ceder lane and Tree top apt. (The last two are not bad areas, but not what I'm looking for.)

Roommates.com? Uloop.com?

Thanks Tsar, looking for stuff now. Roommates.com isn't looking to good, (unless I want to live with a 35+ year old) but Uloop.com is looking promising.

This is going to be weird trying to live with random people.

one is deleted, and one is no where near new brunswick.

Anyhow, living with random people sounds weird at first, but thats what happens your first year of college anyhow, right? not many people know their first roommates. You could end up with a psycho, or you could end up with somoene who will be your friend for the rest of your life. Thats part of living at school.

Same happened to me my soph year up at Rutgers. I ended up commuting from Hamilton instead, but I'm going back to Rockoff for my last semester.

I wouldn't think you'd have a problem, you know there's rent/roomate ads posted at every bus stop. I'm sure you'll figure something out.

Happy ending:
Me and the kid who I was originally supposed to double up with agreed with my logic and reasoning on why I would be a great roommate. So I'm living with them next year. Picked up the lease info today.
