I really really want a new G8, but the only way i could swing the payments would be to sell my car. Lately I've felt like getting into something brand new but that has balls at the same time. I love my car but it is really getting old to me. I would only sell it if i could get enough to finish off the payments on it though. And would only sell it to someone that would take care of it.
So what are you guys opinion on this? I may wait until i get home from my tour before i do anything anyway. How would you guys feel if my name was DevilDougGXP?

Kinda been getting bit by the new car bug myself lately...thing is I own the Ls1 outright and I like the fact that I can actually put money into it without strapping myself w/ payments...I think if its what you really want and it wont strap you to bad financially go w/ the new car. You only live once.

GXPs run low 13s out of the box. CAI exhaust and tune and you should be hitting mid 12s. 38k sticker price. How much of a down payment are you gonna put down?

Doug, have you driven a G8? If not, I recommend a test drive. That will answer all your questions.

i have not driven one but today i was at a dealer looking one over and fell in love. it wasnt a GXP, but i may just go with a GT, even though i want the GXP wheels and the LS3 lol. Im going to try to get a drive in one before i leave for iraq. i think i could live with the GT and just buy GXP wheels for almost 10 grand less. I either want the pacific slate or the magnetic grey metallic.
oh yeah....anyone want a really nice trans am?
almost as fast, better to drive every day, more room, creature comforts, warrenty,
only toss up is looks, i personally love them, i say if you can swing the payments and insurance without having to fudge up your lifestyle, go for it..........
im sure this is already your plan, but why not try to unload the t/a before you leave, and not buy the new one yet, then you will have the money from the bird and the overseas pay when you get home to make a nice large downpayment

Agree. The money earned could earn interest (CD account I'd suggest) while you're on tour. By the time you come back, GXPs should be cheaper.

i definitely love the way it looks. i love that it has more functionality for me with more room, its very comfortable, and i love to travel and the TA is alright but not very comfy to drive in heavy DC traffic, and i still get a legitimate 23 MPG on the highway even with the cam and 4.10s. so i wont miss the MPG with the G8 because its a 6 speed auto, and has the active fuel management.
the hardest part of this is for me to part with my car, I love it to death, but i think its time for me to move on to something newer. the best part is it still has an LS motor, there isnt much for them right now but they have cat backs and such should keep me occupied for a while.
i still want to drive one before anything else though. Id be looking to start my car at 17,000 OBO i think. so i can pay it off and start with a fresh new loan. and i would definitely wait until i get home before i buy anything.

...devil's advocate...Pontiac is going out of business, the resale value on the cars will tank. I'd think long & hard about buying a new Pontiac, and it better be well below sticker and at the most dealer invoice.
Also, everyday you wait to sell the TA is is worth less - prices on 4th gens already appear to be dropping pretty good.

ugh, so true. i thought about that with the G8, ive been toying back and forth about the G8 or the camaro.

Well, you found out my answer.
I would say that you should ahve sold the TA, put it in a CD or soemthing to earn a little, then take whatever pay you have, by the time you come back state-side, you should be ready to go.
I was looking foward to driving a Camaro. I got to drive a new 2010 Mustang V6 today, and while its a very solid car and looks good, its beyond underpowerd.

I would say hold onto your car. You might view things differently when you come back, and you leave soon anyway. That way you have it, but can still sell it if you please.

How do you think my truck feels with an extra 1000lbs?

1. the mustang was a 6 cyl there way underpowered.
2. the V8 is still underpowered (315hp) but you can still get em sideways in 2nd :lol:8-)
3. It is a good looking car, and by the way did you check out the rear turnsignals there pretty cool
The new camaro has over 100 hp over the mustang so I would take one of them for a drive

thats deffinately a bit too high. how many miles are on your car? honestly with about 60k miles id say your car would sell for about 12k

doug, you are ghey. the ws6 is tooo nice! no offense, 17k seems too high

17k is more or about the same as what a nice ls2 gto will cost..

If you have someone lined up at 17k I would jump on that money now! You can probably get a 2000 Vette with similar mileage for 17k.

yeah thats a lot....lol its an excuse to not sell it! i will owe a lot less when i get home, but i will probably wind up just getting a fresh paint job and a new truck....maybe some new toys under the hood.

My opinion-
Sell the bird and wait to buy a new car until you get back from the sandbox. Don't buy a new car to just have it sit there depreciating. And you may want to reconsider taking on a lot of debt to own more toys.

^^^I'm with this guy. Sell it so you have no insurance payments while deployed. Comeback and buy a Chevy Volt.

Have you thought about a gently used G8 GT? You could get one with less than 10K miles and a lot less sticker shock.
Personally that is what I am waiting for with the new Camaro and Challenger. When I pay my truck off in 3 / 4 years there should be plenty to choose from.
