Can anyone tell me what the differences are between the 2 models? Also am I correct in stating there is a SS Z28 model option??

4th gen.

There was no such thing as a "SS Z28"

My work calls an SS an "SS Z28" on R/O's...

there's no major differences. The HP difference between the 2 models are so minimal, and who keeps their cars stock anyway?

Check this thread out for all the info you want to know about 98-02 f-bodies. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/new-ls1-owners-newbie-tech/213148-jrps-faq-commonly-asked-questions.html IMO, you can't go wrong with a 99-02, but stay away from 98's as they have some "first year flaws" of the newest 4th gen cars.

basically hood, spoiler, badges, wheels and bigger sway bars. im not sure if theres a difference in the spring rate too. im pretty sure z28s have fe2 sport suspension while ss's and ws6 have fe3 springs

edit: oh yeah and a power steering cooler too

Z-28s were available in a stripped out format (no options). No T-tops, crank windows, manual cloth seats, manual mirrors, no T/C. They have a "flat" hood (no scoop) and a smaller spoiler than the SS model.

I said IMO:wink:. Obviously your car moves out and would walk all over my 99. But when stock, I don't like the stock heads of a 98, smaller gas tank, and the pcm is a little different from the rest of the years. 98-99's do have the best TB and cam of the years.

i cant complain about my 98 besides the few small stupid things that have happened but thats because of age. but anyway my insurance card says "Z28 SS"

I think the gastank is the same size, mine is just steel.

My stock heads seemed to flow fine vs my buddies car who has an 00. The PCM/electronics are different...

Also, people say the 98's had weak rod bolts, my car sees 7k regularly with no issue.

power steering cooler? Don't all the V8 LS cars get them?

nope, only the ss and ws6 got them...might have been an option on the z28 and t/a though.

All SS's began life as Z28's, then left GM to be converted into "SS" models

I believe the 96-97 cars may have been the only ones badged as a Z28 SS. 98 on up would be straight SS badging or regular Z28 badging. The SS option was in addition to the Z28.

the early ones yes. the later ones 00-02 were done in house by GM and not slp.

98s has 12 gallon gas tanks and no fuel return.

98/99 had a bigger cam than 01-02 (01-02 had a deleted egr, ls6 intake and smaller ls6 cam to pass emissions).

98's also had 28 lb injectors

all ls1's have weak rod bolts. ask dustin.

the powersteering cooler is mostly on ss's and ws6's. rare on a low level.

My 2000 SS has SLP stickers all over it and even one of the RPO's calls out for the "hood for transit" so I'm pretty sure they still went to SLP for the conversion in 2000 at least.

98's had 15.5 gal fuel tanks and where the only LS1 powered F-bodies that had a fuel return line. No F-body ever received an LS6 cam from the factory.

Correct. Some came with "LS6" blocks, but never a full LS6 motor or cam...

Correct..SS work was done by SLP, but I think that towards the end they were building the SS's at St.T using SLP sourced parts just as you would a regular Tier 1 supplier.

Only the SS hood and any slp options ordered where added at SLP's plant (CME,shocks, dif, etc)
All SS start as Z/28's shipped with dummy hoods to SLP, like JL8Jeff mentioned the dummy hood is noted on the build sheet
