Fine, I will go do more research, but I think those numbers are right.

Besides, whats it mean to you, you can't adjust it....

I don't remember off the top of my head but I agree those numbers can't be right. Isn't the timing listed on the radiator shroud though?. I would check for you to make sure but I put my car cover on and its a pain to get off.

Don't screw with it.

I think it comes at two turns out, I think. Which would be stock, no change in timing.

huh? you talking bout my knob job? its either 15 possible degrees of retard or 7.5 advance/retard....

LTb1ow

No, I thought you meant the MSD opti, it has I think +-7 degrees of adjustable-ness.

Just to give a reference point cause I checked the shroud and no timing info other than saying computer controlled. My car seems to like 22 - 24 degree's advance but the second I hit 25 she starts missing/pre-detonating with the blower off, I am also running a aftermarket ignition system into my Opti a you saw though, so it tends to be a little easier to jump spark with mine.

What is wrong with it?

well i was watching the datastream and the timing was between 15-19 at idle and adjusting it didn't show any change on the scantool. i also had it running awhile and it was throwing a little smoke and smelled a little carbon monoxideish. could have been the exhaust swap but i doubt it. i need to see what the afr is. fugging trick!!

Well, I would disconnect the MSD stuff and make sure its doing ok stock.

Not a huge fan of MSD even though everyone swears by them (except when it comes to the opti, heard of alot of problems)but I have had two bad coils and a bad box from MSD (and Ironically those where all the MSD products I've owned), all where brand new when I got them and where not functioning correctly right out of the box. Had missing all over the place and if I gave it anything above half throttle it wouldn't go anywhere. Not a huge fan of Accel either but so far so good on the new opti.

Dynaspark or GM would be my choices for optispark. I run a 6AL for the rev limiter part, and a big ass mallory coil cause I can...

What is your car doing Adam?

If you are talking about the swap of putting those headers on, smoke and a weird smell is normal. The grease/oil from your hand and whatever else gets on it usually smokes for a few hours or a couple of days depending on how long you drive it for, just make sure nothing is touching them. As for the timing, yeah thats a bit low.,

My Jacob Pro street kicks ass. So powerful it melted my stock cap and was still functioning perfectly, I switched to a accel opti cause its rated close to the 65K that the Jacobs System puts out.

Im pretty sure you cant smell carbon monoxide :?:

JK

If you adjust the timing with the engine running, the computer is going to keep it where it wants. Thats why on the TPI cars you have to disconnect the wire that controls it. If the computer is cutting the timing at idle, it will prob make a code. I know the TPIs cut timing when they dont detect a knock signal. Im not 100% familiar with the lt1 yet as it hasnt broken down on me 15 times like the tpi formy. But the car runs correct? if so, what is it doing exactly? and if you can read the timing off the ecm why cant you read the o2s?

i'll get back to you guys, haven't put the headers on yet. the timing is computer controlled but i thought the msd bypassed it. eh i dono, maybe i'll call them

It is on any fuel injected car (dont quote me on that) the MSD lets you adjust the base timing that the ECU uses so your sort of "tricking" the computer into giving you a little more timing. For example, the ECU knows you are set at 5 deg advance. If it calls for 25 at the current RPM and load, It will add 20 degrees of advance via the distributor for a total of 25. With the MSD you can set that origial 5 to 10, resulting in 30 degrees advance. More of a tuning tool than anything

Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas you fool.

set it to 77 degrees, youll be fine
