how do i know if the speed limiter on my 94 z28 is set at 110 or 142 just by looking at the car? and also if it is set to 110, how much will it cost to take the speed limiter off by reprograming it? btw..it has a 150mph speedo

it should hit 150 then. from the factory, your car came with z-rated tires. they got the 150 speedos and have the high governor. a hypertech tuner can eliminate the governor pretty much or any sort of tuner can delete it. i believe pcm for less gets around $150 for a mail order tune.

I was under the impression that the Z28 option removed the governor in early LT1 cars.

does the car even have enough power to go 150? Its not the most aerodynamic car around, even though it looks like it

spoke to Jay at Jay Fischer Pontiac (from what i kno he's the best aroun with lt1 and ls1 fbodies, but again im a c4 corvette guy not really an fbody guy) anyway he told me that if you look at the door sticker on your car and it came with w raited tires the speed governer is set at 110 from the factory due to FED law, if your door sticker says your car came with zr raited tires the governer is set at 142 from the factory..also the w raited cars have a 273 rear as oppossed to the 3 something rear in the zr raited cars...the 150mph speedo is also an indicator but after 1993 they all recived 150mph speedos..just some food for thought

I wrote a program to estimate vehicle top speeds for a fluid dynamics class that takes into account drag and road friction. I think the stock lt1 can go about 215 assuming no wind, and constant air properties based on my calculations. I'll try to dig the program up. You can find C_d (friction factor) values off of wikipedia for most cars if you want to compare aerodynamics.

I believe he has W rated and S rated confused. W and Y are subsets of ZR.

In my understanding it would take over 600hp to do 215...not 275. I thought even stock ls1s topped out at like 165? and thats 350-340 whatever their underrated HP was from the factory

Here. Turns out that there was a 105 Mph govenor on some Z28's with differant tire sizes. And in December 1993 Car and Driver tested a '94 Z28 against a '94 Mustang (blew it away btw) and they reached a top speed of 156 Mph in a 6 speed.

The manual LT1 cars are "suppose" to be able to pull around 145 in 5th gear, they don't have the HP to pull the high number in 6th.

If you do a search there was is a thread about all the speeds, tires etc of the years, there are some variations in the early LT1 years.

I don't think he was taking hp into account

As far as I know the 94 Z/28 that came with 150 speedos have no Gov. When I was programing my 94 when I reached the limiter adjustment the programmer ask me if I wanted to change the top speed limiter, I said no when I reviewed the settings I programed, the limiter showed it was set at 255 mph.

my 93z was governed at 105

took it out to a "closed course" to test it.

"101..102...103...hey maybe it's not gover[FUEL CUTTTTTTTT]ned. okay nevermind yeah it is"

speed limiter should be set at 162mph i believe(if your car came with z rated tires)

yeah i have had my 96 way up there almost to 165 before i realized oh **** the cop spot is like a mile away...but if it had the z rated tires you should run our of road or power before you hit the top speed anyway.
