Need help with a starter

I have an LT4 starter that I need to put into my '95 T/A. In order to get it to fit, I believe I'll need to drop/disconnect the Y pipe from my MAC headers. I don't have the tools to do this anymore. Can anyone refer a mechanic? Or would anyone like to help me get this done and I'll throw you some bones for your efforts?

Long time no see.....don't remember where in central you are, but if you are anywhere remotely close to PA, I would take it to JS Performance. Josh knows his stuff, and his labor rates are quite cheap.

does it need to be sawzalled off or do you have clamps/flanges ?? (the exhaust)

Should be flanges, mine was.

I am in Aberdeen/Cliffwood zipcode 07735. I'm on the coast...the 'northern' coast at exit 117/120.

Nothing needs to be cut...just need to take the bolts down. Will need a jack, jackstands, torque/socket wrench, extensions, swivel/universal for some tougher angles... that's it. pretty standard stuff.


I tried to change it a few years back when I first got it and could not get it past the y-pipe. I just left the old one in there because I did not have the time to fiddle with it at the time. Now the current starter just clicks so it needs to be replaced.

Just had a baby two weeks ago so this car is now a priority to get moving on the road again.

Yes long time no see indeed. Anyone who met me would have met me at the first meet which was a pizza place/pool hall in Ewing NJ I think. I haven't been very active in the f-body community since then as I became very busy with work and then my life just took off.

yeah thats too far for me....sounds like a pretty straightforward job...even if you were to take it to a random place. id help you but i simply dont have the time in the week or so to drive up somewhere i never heard of lol.





fyi starter job at a random shop would probably run you like 150

Oh you are just south of Red Bank.

Yeah, drop the Y (or drop it enough to access the starter) and swap out the starter. Remove/replace. That's all.

Well I have never really messed with an LT1 starter and the wiring involved, but I could prob help you with the Y and what not.

I have changed the starter before. It is pretty straight forward --- just two bolts and two wires.

usually starters don't click when they go bad, unless they are oil fouled or something. just a thought.

Same deal as a GenI starter? One main hot and a trigger for the solenoid?

Really? I dunno. I know it's an older starter. I had some trouble with it in the fall. It would click click click if I had started the car recently (i.e. ran into wawa to get something and came out in a flash). If I started the car in the morning, or when leaving work... no problem.

For quite a while, the starter had been very very loud... almost like a funny car starter (if I can remember what that sounds like). After the engine caught and kicked over, the starter would screech if I did not disengage it right away.

Nah it would disengage fine. I think the freewheeling part or whatever of the starter went, so I would hear the starter run up to like 800-900 RPM or so.

Doesn't much better. The starter is deaded.

Aight,well should not be that bad at all, try to remeber to spray the header flange bolts with some WD40 the night before or that morning.

PB blaster! That's the name of the 'liquid wrench' i used when I did the header job 6 years ago! Haven't heard it since!

never start an exhaust job without it...or anywhere theres likely to be rusty bolts

No...the name comes from high school. This one kid kept coming up with names for me because he thought I was getting action (I was...just not bragging about it). He came up with tons of names like "The Mason" and "The Bricklayer" etc. Long story. Anyway, one day he came up with "The Laymaster". It was hysterical because he ran into the band room, got on the drums, and started this big drumroll to introduce me. If you've ever seen the cartoon "Darkwing Duck" it was similar to that intro, except...well...the context was changed, obviously.

Oh yeah, that was 13 years ago.
