View Full Version : X pipe

So I have been toying with the idea of buying an X pipe kit and running dumps before the axle. Summit has a nice one with cutouts in the X and stainless for 170 ish... that being said, will it be possible to have a nice deep sound at idle but not the blaring ness of an open Y car...?

Any thoughts of good mellow ish mufflers?

Dumps can be very loud in a car - especially a hatch back, regardless of muffler brand. That said, don't overlook dynomax ultra-flows for reasonable sound & good airflow.

I'd remind you of the illegality of it but you'll cry, so I won't. :)

W/ the LT1's firing order thats going to be obnoxiously loud, you could quiet it down w/ a dynomax superturbo muffler. Great flow and really quiet. That should have you in the high 13's in no time :|.

Single 3" exhaust with tailpipes rule

LTb1ow
06-08-2009, 08:58 AM
Why?

Mine is way to quiet and I don't wanna drop a huge amount of money on another cat back. X pipe will flow better and give me much more choice on mufflers.

You could run any muffler you want with a single 3"... Way cheaper than redoing the whole exhaust, losing ground clearance, and making your car loud and stinky inside with dumps.

My car has trapped 121mph on motor in a 1/4 mile through single 3" exhaust - it's not nearly as restrictive as people think. 8-)

LTb1ow

Well ok, heres the thing, its an expensive cat back and I do not wanna cut it up. So a cheap X pipe for ****s and giggles would be more fun to screw with. As for smelling, my car does that already.

slaptastic had dumps on his car and hated it (kick up dirt/dust, drone, obnoxious sound under your a$$), now has 3" true duals with no mufflers and loves it. Or at least I love it

LTb1ow

The idea is less weight, 3" true duals would weight a lot.

3" TDs are also expensive...I was just stating that he hated the dumps, and preferred tailpipes, to let you know what it was like when he had them. IMO it sounds better with tailpipes as well.

It can be "legal" (all other things aside) if it is not exessively loud and it exits gases behid the axle correct?

actually its kind of biased because the inspector can choose whether or not its a failure. i'm sure if they have to get on their stomach to probe the car, they are going to fail it :D

i just got rid of my true duals and x pipe. it sounds great to be honest...but the whole reason i found it wasnt for me cause i wanted to run a chassis mount torque arm, so i traded for a y pipe and single exhaust to gain the room. it feels a tad bit slower without the duals now....if you exit it out the back it sounds good. i have pics of it and all if you want pm me i can link you...dont wanna jack your thread

edit: if your looking for a straight through muffler style check out tsp. a friend of mine has an ss with a tsp x pipe and dumps. it sounds crazy good

In NJ the exhaust has to exit at the side or rear of the vehicle at least 4" after any window that you can roll down. So on a 4th gen, the exhaust has to come to (near?) the edge of the body anywhere behind the rear wheels.

LTb1ow

So I could theoretically have 90 degrees after the mufflers and shoot em out the side in front of the wheels?

I don't think there is enough space there. Go measure from the rearmost point of your side window to the leading edge of the wheelwell. You'll need at least 7" there to run a 3" tip out the side.

I don't mean any disrespect but why are you hacking up this poor car? Between wanting to move fuel lines and some small solenoid that's not bothering anything and now wanting run dumps on a car that traps at a 105mph...I don't know...it seems like you're trying to do all of this stuff when you have other issues to handle. Even if your car was faster it's still a waste.

You're taking an average street car and ruining the drivability and practicality. To each their own but it's not like you own some 10 second car that sees the track all of the time.

With that said, if you're hell-bent on running duals definitely listen to Bonzo.

Do you have to whine every time someone shows a little bit of criticism? Seriously dude...every time someone doesn't agree with your idea you whine like a ****ing 5yr that just had a piece of candy stolen.

I'll take your word for it about your car being more than an average street car..I saw your trap speed and I guess it's all in the driver.

I was just trying to show some respectable criticism...like I said, to each their own...it just seems like you're making more work for yourself. Sorry for trying to help and provide a different point of view.

BTW, adding a supercharger isn't hacking up a car like your IM said...nice try though. You might want to try the driver mod before adding any more power mods to your car.

...and WTF....your original response to my post isn't showing up...I think the board ate it, lol.

I know you aren't looking for a lecture, so just skip this is you want. But I'm having Wayfast flashbacks over here.

What you should do is stick to a critical path with your car. Fix what's messed up and needs to be addressed FIRST before you go solving problems you don't have, or modding something (that gives no real "gain") that creates more problems you don't need.

If you NEED an exhaust system and don't mind getting hassled by the 'man (keep in mind, this is going to be pretty loud) go ahead and do it. I've heard the summit x-pipes are pretty decent. Keep in mind that this exhaust will not be legal for reasons Justin mentioned.

If you don't NEED an exhaust system, save the cash or put it towards some other flaw with the car that keeps it from knocking down the times it should.

Precisely. It's your car and money so do what you want but if you want to be louder then add horsepower not bigger exhaust. Big pipes on a mildly modified motor will do nothing but make noise - If that's what you want then go ahead but in reality you just come off as obnoxious. Any quality single 3" catback will flow enough to make serious HP... Once again, look at my car for proof of this.

Loud but slow = :banghead:
Quiet but fast =

But you still need to explain to me how an X pipe would be hacking up my car any more than a regular catback...lol

I shouldn't have used the word hack since I don't mean "OMG look at the crap work that shop did, what hack work".

What I mean is you're making the car less and less streetable. Now if that's your thing, cool. I'm telling you now a LT1 with true duals and dumps is going to be insanely loud....are you sure you're going to be able to deal with it? It might be "cool" for the first few months but what if you grow tired of it? What will you neighbors think? Will the cops harass you in your town? What if you lose some ground clearance, now suddenly your grimacing every time you come up to a big speed bump or a steep driveway? These are all things to think about...I'm by no means an expert on your car since most of your mods are top secret CIA classified info ;) but regardless....is everything else on the car 100%? Is it running the best it possibly can?

Like I've said, along with others, it's your car and your $$ so by all means spend it how you see fit but I'd hate to see you go through all of the trouble of doing an exhaust like that then hating it a few months later because it's causing more aggravation than it's worth.

I don't remember every post in this thread so I'm not sure if it's been recommended or ruled out but have you considered a cutout?

Duals with dumps are lighter then a full cat back, I used to DD a car with true duals with just full bolt-ons. I agree that you should work out some bugs because you should be trapping higher butif you want to do exhaust then it's your car and do what you want

I have a mod list somewhere? LOL

Yea, I would say its 100% driver fail. Its been driven for a year now, so if it was something internal I think it would have failed already. No leaking fluids internally, very good oil pressure, and good tires.

I am talking to my tuner now, so he is tweaking the tune and adding in the change for gears, which hopefully will help.

With any luck, I will pull off the muffler like Ron suggested and bring it to the track again.

But all things aside, I kinda posted this thread mainly to see if an X pipe was a viable option to making my car a bit louder... B&B may be great, but its very tame.

Yes it will....the low trap on his one and only pass was a result of him spinning from the time he launched the car until somewhere close to the 330' mark since he didn't heat up the drag radials.

Or come to Island and have the best of both worlds...go around the water box AND get a ton of runs in :-P

How far are you from Atco?

Prob roughly the same distance to island, that was a fail on Al's part. Etown is like a 1/2 hr.

You guys are too much lol, if you want a loud exhaust with a nice tone throw an x-pipe on and do dumps like you want. I don't think everyone gets the point that your looking g for sound and aren't happy with your current setup

Woah, just re read all this... aha... yea

So I have an X pipe in case no one knew, it was free, and I do all my work, so it cost me nothing. ;)

That being said, I have already gotten a written warning from the grand ole state of NJ.

I am contemplating either a) throwing my catback back on or b) getting a pair of actual mufflers.

Its a three inch X with a pair of sweet thunders

Ideas would be most appreciated if you run the muffler you are suggesting...

What?

I think that was an attempt to make fun of your current system, then agree that you should put in real mufflers.

Ah ok.

Please keep the criticism constructive and refrain from posting if you do not have the muffler you are recommending.

a muffler for the stock location won't work in this application.
