Since the whole issue with HD cancelling the 2010 models of the only 2 bikes i'd consider, i figured maybe i'd look into building my own bike/chopper. I always had a very specific sytle of bike i want and now could be the time. Doing a quick price estimate it would come to about 13k, 4k less than a harley, but still up there. Im trying to see if i could do it for under 10k. I only checked one site for prices so i bet there are other places for good deals.

As for the bike i want here are some specs...
Rigid frame w/280+ rear tire
not sure exact rake of the forks
large size front forks(not a springer front end)
110"+ motor(S&S probably)
5 or 6 speed trans(chain or belt drive)
low drag bars
small speedo w/gauge lights, and large Tach
basic fuel and oil tanks, nothing special
no front fender
wide basic rear fender

basically this chassis to start with...

im just not sure if thats a decent price.

so anyone who actually built a custom bike, let me know you experiences and any places that have great deals.

Im thinking i may buy a rolling chassis and sheet metal when i come home from this hell hole, i'd then take my time over the next year to build it up.

edit: or this...mmmmm

sure, but right now i wouldnt have the money, thats why it would have been easy to finance a HD, also why id only buy a custom rolling chassis in dec. and the drivetrain at a later point.

Make sure whatever frame you get it has an MSO...even then it may be a pain to title....I'm sure you're well aware of these issues though.

Doublecheck on Demon...I may have heard bad things about them qualitywise but could have been a different company.

I think your budget is realistic as long as drivetrain doesn't get out of hand. I bought my Harley as a basket case but complete and I'm almost finished. Best advice is to mock up EVERYTHING before you paint/powder parts. I had to go back and cut my oil tank off because I didn't have the drive chain on when I welded it in place. I'm also still having alignment issues with my rear wheel to the trans sprocket.

Sorry I have been away from the site for a while. I have built a few, the title is no trouble, just go to Trenton, special titles section, and bring your MSO, and receipts that say you paid tax for everything, you will have a title in 2 weeks. If you have never built one before, its gonna cost you a lot more money, because you dont know what or where to buy stuff, and everything at Harley is expensive. What type of bike is it you want?
