My parents are looking at a Ford Fusion possibly for their next car. Does anyone have any first hand insight/advice as to what (if any) problems to expect or things to look out for on a used one? They are looking at low mile certified used cars, not 50k+ mile cars, just an FYI. Thank you.

Rear brake pads... that's pretty much it. those are some solid cars. Tell them to try out a new 09 first because they can be had for cheap now that Ford has released the new 2010 model. Just a suggestion.
I love the Fusion. It's a great car. I would get one if I were in the market for a mid-sizer. The 4 banger can be had with a 6-speed manual and supposedly they handle great. I can't think of one thing not to like about that car

When i used to work at a Ford dealer we would drive those things around all the time. They handle very nice and are nice cars. I think if I was going to look for a 4-door sedan type vehicle that's what i would drive.

I looked at an 09 Fusion a few weeks ago. I like the styling and practicality of having four doors. As mentioned, you can get a 4cyl if thats what is in your proce range.
I decided against it for two reasons: 1) I admit to being a Pontiac fanboy (yeah, I know) so I would stick with GM for the next car. Having said that, I still went to see the Fusion and liked it. 2) As a family man myself, I need a sedan for the daily driver to haul kids and equipment around. Since I have several people in the car with me on weekends, I want more power than I have now - a 4cyl Camry. Hearing the car rev high under load sounds like the car is straining. So the next car needs to be a 6cyl at least.
If the next car is just a daily driver for one or two people, the Fusion may be a great choice. Personally I would go with at least a 6cyl though.

The 2010 Fusion can be had with a Sport package that adds a sport suspension but can only be had with V6 and 6 speed auto.

Yup.
Also AWD, but comes in auto, which is the reason its not in my driveway right now.

Thanks guys. My parents are looking at an 07 with around 13k miles on it. It will mostly be my mother's car and she prefers the V6 herself actually. I appreciate the input, good to hear they are nice cars.

My good friend drives an '07 V6 AWD as his company car. Gets around great, has a decent amount of power, and he doesn't have many complaints. The only issue, as stated, is odd brake wear.

Ive never seen a fusion with odd/execessive/ bad rear brake wear, only the 500/tarus platform that you need to replace the rear pads/rotors every 15k. They waste battery cables because of poor battery design, make shure the batt didnt leak out get an aftrmarket one for it if it has a factory one. If it needs an alignment its going to be expensive because the control arms need to be replaced to change camber/caster. Ford ues "lubed for life" suspension compnents (which means no grease fittings). Heated seats burn out, lumbar supports break so check them. PTO on awd models leak at the shaft seals (not just on the fusion all fords). Just some things I noticed when working on them, but all in all nice cars, if there taken care of you sould have no problems with it.

New one is nice, but the older Fusion...eh...
Look at an 08 Malibu LTZ. More power, same fuel economy, better interior and exterior design.

i loved the Malibu I rented, but the Ford has some selling points as well. Better handling (although in all fairness, I was very impressed at the Malibu's balance of ride quality and handling) and the Sync system. It's a good time for Ford and GM. :)

while its true that the newer fords dont use grease fittings its still wise to shoot down connecting parts of the suspension with white lithium grease

I liked the original style and the new one is even nicer, I especially like the look of the new GT but that looks like it wont be coming out any time soon.

If they put the interior of the 2010 Taurus in the new Fusion, I'd be sold.

Oh yeah, the new Taurus is great too. I don't mind the interior of the Fusion, but the rest of the segment has stunning interiors

I work for Ford, so I'm going to tell you to make them buy one, and pref. from me! hahaha The new 2010 Fusion is sexy. The V6 AWD model seriously has everything and anything you could want/need in a sedan. It may not be as roomy as a Taurus, but it gets better fuel economy and IMO, cooler! I have never ran into any consistent problems with them (I work in the service department). The I4 is a great deal because in the older models you were able to get them in the "Sport Package" which came with the spoiler, suede seats, Sync, Sirus, and the color changing interior.
I have Sync in my Ford Edge and it seriously rules.

This was a public service announcement by BigAl..."not on GM's payroll but should be."
;):D
He's right though, the Malibu LTZ would be close competition.

Fusion is nice, but the new one is better.
Malibu, IMO, has a better interior and exterior design. I am in Fusion's a lot, as all the managers have one to drive around in.
