So, I was out w/ a couple friends (wifey, misterjuice etc) and we passed by Hawthorne Chevy and noticed two new camaro's - one red and one yellow.

We stopped by to look at them.

So, the yellow w/ black striped one was a 2LT v6
Leather interior
RS package
Ugly stick on stripes - looked dealer installed

Window sticker had a piece of paper covering the MSRP - it just said call the dealer.

We then looked at the red one. It was a v6 with the 1LT package
options:
6 speed auto
rs package

They had the MSRP covered and had ia piece of paper listing it for $38,995?!?!?!?! Yes, ALMOST $39,000!!!!!

I went to chevy's web site and it should be $27,420!!!

We are talking over $10,000 mark up?!?!?!

I don't even want t know what they want for the yellow one - my guess is probably just over $40,000 as it was a 2LT!

And what would they charge for an SS????? $50,000+????

Now, I understand supply vs. demand........ and "market adjustment" (which is a crock of ***** but legal) but this is just plain stupid!

One could just get a covette for the same price. $10,000+ increase in the price while the economy is in the crapper and GM is in horrible shape is just plain stupid - no wonder GM is where it is now.

I felt really good getting into my challenger ;) While it may be slower...... it costs a HELL of a lot less

Yup, that's the yellow one.

I went to their web site and for the yellow one they say
"This Car is Awesome!!!! It will not be sold at MSRP however...there is a market adjustment for this in stock vehicle. 3,000 over msrp. Feel free to negotiate"

$3,000 over msrp my @ss - if they raise a lesser model by $10,000+ what would they do for a more optioned car.

Unfrigginbeliveable...
I wish GM could just flood the market with these cars. People actualy belive that with GM in Chap 11, that they are either not making any more. or will stop making them soon, so they eat this crap up.
Stupid people.

I was over at Superior Chevy (rt1 Lawrenceville) getting parts Saturday morning. I was talking to the parts guy (big Camaro guy) and he said they sold one $5k over sticker.

If I had the money to pick one up I would be all over a 1LT / RS in the inferno orange with white stripes....then I'd trade the stock wheels for some 18" LT wheels and call it a throwback to the '92 Heritage edition Camaros. :)

It should be cheaper to buy without them, and then have them cut and installed at a reputable local shop instead.

Unless you are talking about Hawthorne Chevrolet, Chevrolet Motor Company has no say on what dealers sell the car for. It is illegal for Chevy to dictate the pricing.

This is the same thing the dealers did when the 93 Indy Pace Car package was made available. Very limited in which dealers were getting cars and how many. People were paying $10-20K over sticker for the cars which is so stupid because it would take 15-20 years in a sealed storage building to even get that money back. The guy I bought my 93 Indy Pace Car from said he went to 3 dealers until he got one for sticker price. 2 of the dealers were taking sealed bids. The dealer he ordered it from didn't even know what he was ordering so they agreed to sticker. When it came in, they wanted him to pay for it in full the day it arrived because they had people offering 5-10k over sticker for it. So there are plenty of dumb people out there willing to pay extra so don't expect dealers to sell for sticker any time soon.

I will never buy another v6 Camaro...let alone for that price...Chevy has a nerve putting a mark up on these cars considering the shape there in.

I went to Lucas Chevy on 38 and they had it marked up to 44,000 for an SS all options, 39,000 for the V6 w/all options.

That is just ridiculous, I think I'll just call GM and have a custom one made and delivered at my door for about the same price + maybe another $5,000...

Fixed. The dealers do it, not Chevy. They have no control.

wow James, as Jim said, we were just there in the afternoon  But yea, unbelievable how much they marked it up, we couldn't believe it. They had a silver RS sitting inside the showroom and another red one in the service center, couldn't see if it was an SS though. Aside from the ridiculous mark-up, it was nice seeing one in person next to other cars. It doesn't look ridiculously huge.

How can that be true? When GM says "employee pricing for everyone" that is at every dealer. Right?

They offer the dealer a kick back in any incentive program. GM offers it, but the dealer doesnt have to follow the program. But when you are the only one not offering the deal...how can you sell cars?
In the end, Camaro and other high visual vehicles withstanding, most cars sit on lots for an average of 100 days. Getting rid of thoes cars helps.
If somehow all GM cars become super popular, people beating down the doors to buy them, without incentive programs, there would be no such thing as employee pricing.
It is illegal for GM to dictate price. Though this whole Chap 11 has given GM new life in dealer negotiations. While its still illegal to price fix, GM sure can beat up some dealers here and there.

jims69camaro

they can and do beat on the dealers. if they find out the dealer is marking cars up an exorbitant amount, and GM is closing dealerships... while GM pulling out of a dealership doesn't necessarily put that dealer out of business (ie, Ocean Chevy, Jeep, GMC and T&C Lincoln all in the same dealership) it will hurt a dealer to lose the front-runner in its line-up of cars. they won't sell them any more cars and won't allow them the license to advertise as a GM dealership, and then comes the signage and all of the support documents, POS displays, etc. so a dealer will get hit in the wallet, no matter how they try to spin it. and GM can call their markers in all at once, too, which causes a tailspin in the back room. and the dealer can only request certain cars be sent to them, but in the end the manufacturer is the one who makes the decision on what to send them. this is why the dealers are getting v6 cars first... imagine being a chevy dealer and NOT getting even one camaro for your lot (hmmm, Ocean Chevy...) and having to wait until the price storm settles to get one to sell and having to take a hit on each and every car you do sell (less than MSRP).

please know to separate the dealer from the manufacturer. and know that MSRP stands for Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price... it's up to the dealer to fix the retail price. if the dealer can sell them for $5k over, then that's what the price will be. sooner or later they won't be able to sell them at that price any more, and that's when Jim will buy a new camaro. remember the GTO?

Why is everyone getting their panties in an uproar? :?: The simple solution is don't buy it now. Wait a few months and they'll be giving them away when the supply catches up with the demand.
