well i got home from work to see that my 6.0L was waiting for me. so before the storm hit i rushed to get the motor off the pallet and onto the engine stand.
after i got that done i stripped the wiring harness off the motor. took off the intake manifold and pulled the starter.
not much progress today but should be able to get the rest of the parts off tomorrow

Are you running it with the stock heads and cam? How do they do with the ls1 style intake manifold? i know they are rated at 345hp/380 ft lbs with the truck gear. Should be a good boost in power overall
emolineaux
06-27-2009, 10:33 AM
yea im running the stock 317 heads and the stock cam in the motor. it should be a decent power increase over the stock ls1. and ill be adding the fast intake to it along with some longtubes and maybe even an underdrive pulley.(not sure on the pulley yet)
but i couldnt pass on the deal that i got on the complete lq9

06-27-2009, 05:31 PM
hey good luck man with your build.... can i ask though what the advantages to an iron block would be from the ls aluminum block... arent you adding alot of weight to the front... are you going to run LT1 springs to counter act the iron block.... just curiouse.... im an lt1 guy and dont know crap about ls's and lq's and what ever else they are callen them these days...
emolineaux
06-27-2009, 05:48 PM
its going to add some weight to the front but i dont drag this car so it isnt going to bother me. but ill be making more power with this stock 6.0 over the ls1 i had.

little update to end the day.
got the rad/fan out of the car, and removed the what appears to be an aftermarket aluminum driveshaft. looks like a gm number but didnt come up on gmparts direct. (Three Rivers 12560725)
started bolting parts to the 6.0 so i dont misplace anything lol and placed the fast on top to get an idea.
also spent a good amount of time cleaning up the LQ9 to make it look a little nicer

well i got a little more done today. probably the last time ill get a chance to touch the z before i leave for myrtle beach.
got the passanger exhaust manifold off. swapped valve covers to the new motor. pulled the p/s pump off and swapped the p/s bracket and alternator, and sensors to the new motor. looks like all thats left is just to drop the trans down and pull the broke ass ls1 out of there.

well today is my last day in sc. cant wait to get home and start working on her some more. i hope to have the trans out tomorrow. im starting to get the itch to drive my car again lol.
i also couldnt get my hand on an ls7 clutch being its on backorder so i ordered me a nice stage 2 monster clutch with lightweight chromoly flywheel so ill probably be swapping rears sooner then i wanted to lol.

Coming along beautifully. Im not much of a ls guy but I got 2 questions.
1.) does the ls motor mounts match up so you can just drop it in without welding in new mounts.
2.) can your struts handle the weight of the new motor ?
emolineaux
07-14-2009, 10:15 PM
the ls1 and the lq9 are based off the same design. just the new one is cast instead of aluminum.
and we will find out lol.
Saitin
07-14-2009, 11:14 PM
I looked into getting a lq4 for my build and did some research and found out the the front struts will hold with stiffer springs but with stock springs and struts it will sag any where from .5-1inch in the front.
Dunno if you looked into the supporting mods of dropping the heavier iron block in or not but that's a little of what I found out.
S.J.SLEEPER
07-14-2009, 11:17 PM
did you have to drill and tap the block for the alt bracket bolt in front?
also make a lil more power with 5.3l heads on it.
don't forget to pull the crank spacer off the back other wise when you goto line up and pull the trans together it will shove the converter into the front pump and break it.
i got a set of 5.3l sittin around if interested pm me.
i just got done building a iron block 6.0l in my car, charged/methed
& of course all the bolt ons

07-14-2009, 11:32 PM
i figured it would lower the front of the car a little. ill be getting suspension after im done and get the car running. not trying to break the bank to bad right now lol.
and i have not got around to tapping the one whole in the block for the alt bracket yet. im just leaving the motor mostly stock except for the fast intake and full exhaust.
also i have the t-56 in my car so i dont need to worry about breaking coverters or front pumps lol.(just rears)

that looks familiar haha, I'll have to post some pics of mine when I get them off my phone,The jest of it is the number 4 piston was gone and the complete front half of the oil pan went with it leaving a nice whole in the bottom of the block and it managed to destroy a valve and break a titanium valve spring(again this was at 2700rpm roughly 35 MPH)!!
And he swears the nos purge unit was jsut for show lol, it was either sprayed the hell out of it or had a spun bearing that was covered up by the sound of the cam and rigged exhaust lol.

nothing is really bolted to the motor now just kinda in place all the front drive, intake and headers are coming off. im going to drop the 6.0 in the car and am leave the engine hooked to he hoist so i can slide the headers in place while i still have clearance. i dont want to chance laying them in place and dropping the motor in if i do it by myself.

well guys i have to take a break from the car because im waiting on a new sensor that goes in the drivers head. because mine broke. so i figured i would show some pictures of the stance and complete lq9 swapped over. ill get a video of it running once i get the sensor and double check to make sure everything is away from the headers lol.
