Chevrolet Camaro demand outpacing supply
06/26/2009, 3:40 PM
By Drew Johnson

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro looks to be a bona fide hit for General Motors as the Detroit automaker is struggling to keep up with demand. After taking more than 10,000 pre-orders, GM is scrambling to fill the 25,000 dealer orders that have flooded the Camaro’s Oshawa, Ontario plant.

GM has seen it sales slide more than 40 percent this year, but the Chevy Camaro is flying off dealer lots. In fact, demand is so high that most dealers say they won’t see another Camaro for several months. Those that still have the new-age pony car in stock are routinely taking $500 over MSRP.

GM sold 5,463 Camaro last month.

Although the market is now full of rear-wheel drive coupe choices – including the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger – the Camaro seems to be hitting the sweet spot of the segment. Those that want relative fuel economy and sporty driving characteristics can opt for the 29 mpg Camaro V6 while those craving an all-out performance machine can order the V8-powered Camaro SS. The Camaro is also featured in this summer’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”, which can only help sales.

Yea, sounds like late 2011 or early 2012 for a Z28. The 'vert will be out in the spring of 2011.

Good job, GM.

well really the chance to own a supercharged v8 stock and run the times that my current car should put down without having to worry about inspection or anything like that would be the drawing point....the fact that the z28 being the top model and looking way more badass than the other two models available would be big in factor.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NO SUPERCHARGED Z28!!!!!
I really really hope that if there was ever a time where GM would not go over the top...it would be for the Z28.
Better suspension, recal the brakes, enhance steering, some new looks, cut 150lbs, add 50hp, and call it a Z28.

There's absolutely no reason to go over the top with this model.

+50 hp and minus 150lbs should take down a GT500 without too much trouble. While the Mustang GT may be lighter than the Camaro, the GT500 is still a pig.

Just call it what it is...The Camaro GT500.
It is NOT a z28.

The Camaro SS hits 0-60 in 4.6 sec
The new GT500 with 540hp (which is 114hp more) runs it at 4.3.
There is a point of diminishing gains in performance. I was reading Top Gear's review this month, they had the GT500, the Camaro SS, and teh SRT8 Challenger.
Camaro was the cheapest by 10 grand to the nearest car, yet posted some of the best times outsid eof 1/4 tot he GT500.
It would not take a lot to make the Camaro Z28, a true Z28, faster then a GT500. The only advantage for the blower is moddability.
I think that there should be two models...a ZL1, and a Z28.
Z28 is the Z06
The ZL1 is the ZR1.

A 450-475hp V8 in a 3700lbs Camaro, with better steering, braking and less body roll would make for a perfect Z28.
Remember that the 3600lb Mustang GT floats north of 2 tons with teh GT500 package.
Thats WITHOUT IRS set up. Thats just a big 5.4SC motor, a 6spd manual gear box, brakes, stickers, gfx and wheels.

Its not a Z28. It doesnt fit the history.
Trans Am never stayed true to to any engine or performance pedagry. Thats why its dead.

Z28, however, has always been about total performance. It never had a big block to make power, it never used power adders or any sort of massive displacement engines. It was born from homologation racing. Z28 has been the race car for Camaro from day one, born from Trans Am, then following into IROC series in the 70's and till 90.
It continued to do well in SCCA racing series with the 4th gen as well.
The Camaro will enter the SCCAs Koni Challenge in the Grand Sport class, going fender to fender with the Mustang FR500.
THAT Camaro should have a direct relationship with the Z28.

camaro never had IRS or a 4k lb curb weight either. your reasoning for that in other posts was new technology and changing times....i can say the need for power adders follows the same path? no?

1979 Camaro Z28 probably came pretty close to the 5th gen.

Camaro was #1 in sales for its segment, meaning it beat out Mustang and Challenger for the month of June.

Heaviest 2nd gen was around 3600 pounds, and I won't even go into the ease of lightening one up. Not 3900+. And 2nd gens have a bigger trunk too. Hard to believe. And a back seat a human can sit in.

BigAls87Z28
07-01-2009, 05:45 PM
NO WAY does the 2nd gen have a bigger trunk then the 5th gen.
Just for the fact that a 2nd gen has a big spare tire sitting in it negates the fact.

I thought that 2nd gens were well north of 3700lbs.

No, you are wrong on both accounts - you getting Camaro facts from NastyLS1?

The 5th gen we looked at and sat in this weekend AT THE CAMARO NATIONALS YOU DIDN'T GO TO MR. CAMARO has crappy trunk. The spare made the floor jet up way in the way.

I have space saver spare in my 77 and can fit more than you think in the trunk. I'll go trunk to trunk with a 5th gen.

And a grown (6") cannot sit in the back - Billy tried and had to bend his head over in order to sit in it. Fail. And we watched as an 8 year old boy could not sit behind his Mom when she was driving. Fail.

Wrong. The Camaro's trunk is BIG, its opening is small.
You know how big I am. I sat in the back. My head hit the roof, thats all. Its not a friggin cross over, its not a G8, so I dont expect leg space out the ass, but it has equal or greater room then my 2nd or third gen does.

how many golf bags will fit in the trunk?

BonzoHansen
07-01-2009, 08:06 PM
I partially recant my trunk comment. Local dealer has 3 V6 cars on the lot and one was open being looked at, so I stopped. The one we saw in carlisle must have been messed up (or the SS is different), this one did not have a weird hump we saw in the SS Saturday. Still small though.

One was up on those ramps dealers use. The car had an exhaust leak. Nice. I will say it looks so easy to put headers in that car most of the people on this site could do it. lol

Still weak a 4000 pound larger car with back seats built for fidget. For comparison 2 of us were in the back of a 2nd gen this weekend much more comfortably. 3 of us not so comfortably. :)

Good read:
Chevrolet Camaro outsells the Ford Mustang for first time in 16 years
07/01/2009, 6:07 PM
By Drew Johnson

Chevrolet’s all-new 2010 Camaro is back with a vengeance, dethroning the Ford Mustang as the best-selling pony car during the month of June. The Camaro was one of the loan bright spots for General Motors as demand for the Camaro nearly doubled the automaker’s expectations.

Chevrolet managed to sell 9,320 examples of the Camaro last month, compared to 7,362 June sales for the 2010 Ford Mustang. The last time the Camaro outsold the Mustang in a single month was October 1993, according to Automotive News. The Camaro was all-new for 1993 while the Mustang was awaiting its 1994 redesign.

More of the same could be in store for July and beyond as Chevrolet is struggling to keep up with Camaro demand. Chevrolet initially received 14,000 pre-orders for the Camaro and has since been bombarded with another 25,000 dealer orders. Camaro demand is so high right now that there is only about a 6-9 day supply on the market with most dealers getting at least $500 over sticker.

In addition to its retro good looks, the Camaro’s powertrains are likely behind its strong sales numbers. The base Camaro comes with a 29 mpg 304 horsepower V6 – almost matching the V8 offered in the Mustang GT – while the SS model offers up to 422 horsepower, a figure only topped by the $46,000+ Mustang GT500.

It remains to be seen if the Camaro will be able to hang on for the full-year sales title, an honor the Camaro hasn’t taken home since 1985.
