hey guys, im pulling the motor in my 96 lt1, would you recommend pulling it from the top or unbolting the front suspension and lifting the front of the body to slide it out, front wheels and all.
thanks
Jim

Slide the engine out.
Although it depends on what kind of tools/friends you have access too.

pretty easy to drop it out under if you have the right setup. might be a little tedious to line it back up, but that will just take time. i would unbolt the lower a arms from the k member though and dolley the k out.

Good write up on how to do it.

If you have a way to lift the car then do it that way, far easier!
Little hint, if you can ( works with a lift , may not have enough room if you lift the body with a hoist) , set the front wheels on blocks so they are 3-4" off the ground. This will give you room to get under the car and see what your doing and reach the bolts easier.

Can you do it from underneath w/o disconnecting brake lines?

You will need to disconnect the lines from the ABS block but if you drop the whole K, thats it.

Just take your time with it, make sure to not skip a connection or two and have them break when you lower the engine... like someone's ABS lines... lol...
Not to bad really though.

355, forged internals gm847 cam, larger throttle body. im cleaning up the stock heads with minor porting and comp cams 1.6 rr for now and im leaving the intake stock for now as well, just cleaned up a little. with full bolt-ons. Given a full bolt-on compliment, with the 847 and touched heads,im guessing id be in the 360-380 RWHP range
LTb1ow
08-21-2009, 11:02 AM
Do you plan on porting the heads later?
IMO the 847 is not the cam for you...
Lt1_8U
08-21-2009, 11:04 AM
yeah, when i get the money i plan on fully porting them out or buying heads. what would you go with and why? i was debating the cc306 cam as well. im not too sure, there are so many options out there
LTb1ow
08-21-2009, 11:06 AM
Something smaller than an 847, its going to want to pull pretty high, and with stock heads you will be choking it.
Granted this is just my humble opinion. The new 355 with let you rev high, but the stock heads will def hold you back with almost whatever cam you decide.

agreed. unless you don't mind spinning to 6700ish, i wouldn't use that cam. LE or AI are great for top ends and custom cam grinds. without good flowing heads, you will be choking the motor alot. you could just do a stout top end for now with aftermarket or stock ported heads and make great power on a stock bottom end. get a cam that peaks around 6-6200 and have some fun!

08-21-2009, 01:06 PM
yeah thats very true, whats the point of getting that cam if im not gunna be able to make power that it should because of my heads. but i might be going a different route, i found a wrecked 94 vette with 44k on it for a grand so i might just buy that for the engine and call it a day, maybe throw a small cam in it idk
Didn't j0n do this awhile back with his old LT1? I think there were pictures and you could reach out to him.

a nice heads and cam package can really wake the car up. how many miles are on the motor? whats the oil pressure like at WOT? i would want to hear the vette motor run first. you would have to swap the timing case cover and of course put in the vented opti. its still an lt1 though, an lt4 would be a better investment if you wanted to get pretty serious. i dono just do a good amount of research before committing money in the wrong direction. should be fun in the end 8-)

If your going to swap motors then I agree with a smaller cam.
But just to clearify something, if you were building a 355 then why would you go with a smaller cam only to swap it later when you do heads. The 306/847 will CERTAINLY make allot more power with better heads, but I'd thrown that cam in with the rebuild. You kill a stock bottom end spinning it high, so if you have a good bottom end you're really not hurting anything. I've built a few with big cams/stock bottom ends ( AUTO TRANS w/CONVERTORS ) and setting the limiter at 6600 they run good and last.

yeah thats true. if all checks out with this vette im going to put the cc306 in it because its stock. if and when i decide to do a 355 i will with the bigger cam

Yea, I mean I can't say much, my car shifts pretty high for stock bottom end, around 6300-6400...
Whats wrong with your current block?

nothing right now, i would just have to have it machined and freshened up. the motor is still in the car so i have to examine the inside to see whats up with it

i pulled my ls1 out the top and it was simple. i had to drop the trans out from under the car.
without a lift i think that way would be easier and you dont have to fight with k member and what not.
if you have a lift drop it out the bottom.
here is my little swap that i kept up with.
i know you have an lt1 but if you have questions feel free to ask.

You don't need a lift, just get a cherry picker and yank the nose up in the air. Engine etc, will lay out nicely. No alignment needed. ;)
And why not pick up the vette motor, freshen that up, and replace the one in the TA with it?

yeah actually brandon, transmaro97 or some numbers dropped his k in his driveway. i'm sure he can throw in some pointers.

i think this week coming up my father and i are going to look at the vette. if i get it im definitely getting a new electric water pump, a cc306 cam to throw in, why not if i have the engine out of the car. maybe some seals like the oil pan seal depending on what it looks like. it just so happens there is a cherry picker in my back yard:mrgreen: i will already feel a good difference in power cuz the vettes came with a rating of 300, i think like 25 over the trans am lt1's...might as well save a little more and get the msd opti right?

yeah, it seems like there are a lot of write ups on it so i should be fine
to be honest, i read the first 5 posts... and my ADD kicked in, .. drop it out the bottom, i pulled the engine/trans on my SS and put it all back togethr by myself, in my garage with just furniture dollies, floorjack, and a cherrypicker.

OR, you could pull it from the bottom still but first flip the car over so its similar to pulling it from the top...
