could be a number of different things. Need to narrow down possible problems before suggesting what to do. First thing is to determine weather its fuel or spark problem.

Opti.

Please stay on topic.

Let's do that, OK?

Ignition module.

i still say alt, died while driving gives an idea that alt went at some point car continued to run on batt power only till it couldnt sustain it anymore, probably brakes lights or such. when shut off batt recouped enough to just crank it one more time since engine was hot and fired right up, but with no more juice left, it died again.

so i say alt

try jumping the car. it should start but as soon as you remove the jumper cables within 1-2 seconds it'll die.

Well, based on the information offered, it could be electrical, ignition or fuel. Without some more information other than it died all everyone can do is guess.

the fact it won't turn over it is probably electrical, alt like Paul said.

vats was an option in some 88's mostly GTAs, but rare

I vote for fuel pump.

or the motor was overrun by the Travelocity Gnome.

I say alt or ignition module...both have happened to me

if it was the fuel pump would it not turn over at all? im gunna pull the alt and have it tested

When the FP in my buick died, it would actuallyt run for about ~5 second, since it would build pressure with the key off but could not build it iwth the car running.

Well, if you cranked it enough to tire the battery.

I wouldn't waste your time taking the alternator somewhere to be tested; do as paul (smokingss) suggested and jump the car then disconnect the cables and see if it remains running.

A bad ignition module or fuel pump wouldn't keep it from turning over, 99% sure you have a dead alternator.

turns over, no start though

the iroc is back on the road! it was a combination of the fuel pump and purge valve, but thanks to zerocool8891 and his buddy coming down 3 days in a row and dropping the tank twice because of a faulty f pump she's running great

am i misunderstanding the original post then??

when you said not turn over did you mean it would still crank but not start....i took it for literal that the motor wouldnt turn at all

yea prob misunderstood his post but he had a bad fuel pump, and that stupid purge valve in the tank that goes from the fuel line to the pump was bad. fixed it all up and back on the road he was. deff a nice looking 4rd gen.
