You plan on open tracking or autocrossing it?

Its been done, can't find the pics at the moment. But why?
You are going to spend a fortune to put a rear that rivals the 10 bolt in suckyness...
Lt1_8U
08-23-2009, 08:06 PM
mostly tracking so it probably wouldn't be worth it. i was just wondering how much it would cost to put it in there because its def a step up from the rear in my car, plus i heard those rear drive shafts can handle around 450hp. i could def take corners like a champ lol

What is "tracking"?
Lt1_8U
08-23-2009, 08:07 PM
drag, sorry lol i have always wanted to do like a road course though. it would be a mostly drag car pretty much. i always thought they weren't that bad to drag with.

then no, I cannot see how this "would it be worth it"

thanks for the input, i figure if I'm going to have that IRS i should see if i can use it to better my car.

How much are you getting the C4 for?
Lt1_8U
08-23-2009, 08:20 PM
a grand, the guy took the interior out of it because his vette caught fire lol. its an awesome deal for a motor and trans with 44k on it.(im getting it from one of my dads buddies)

not sure to tell you the truth, my dad called me and told me he found me a 94 vette for a grand with 44k on the motor. i didn't get a chance to dip into detail about it because my family left for the shore before i got back from work friday lol. i will have all the details up tonight on it if anyone is interested in parts.

I as well thought about a C4 transaxle conversion into the camaro. I do autocross, so it might be nice to have IRS, even though the C4's have some geometry issue's.
WildBillyT
08-24-2009, 09:17 AM
Would probably be cheaper to just buy and fix the Vette. And as above, if you swap then you have to deal with geometry issues and extra driveline alignment BS.
Blacdout96
08-24-2009, 09:25 AM
yeah, you basically got to start from scratch, no tech articles on this, nor kits, you have to fab all the mounting points, and do some customizing with the DS and what not to get it to work.
Lt1_8U
08-24-2009, 09:30 AM
yeah screw that lol. its one thing if there was a kit for it and it could be done without custom fab work but to have to do all custom stuff to gain pretty much nothing isnt worth it.

You *MIGHT* be able to find a street rod shop that could help you.
Lt1_8U
08-24-2009, 09:34 AM
yeah, but prob the cost of that i could have a 12 bolt and some extra cash lol

Sorry, used to saying that too much, no they aren't transaxles, just IRS systems.

Isnt a Dana 44 out of a Viper? that's way too rich for my blood. another thing about vette is the track, whats it for C4 and C5 rears compared to Camaro's. My concern would be my 11" rims in the rear not fitting in the back.

Dana 36 was 1984, Dana 44 was 1985-96.
To drag this I think you would need 3 driveshaft loops.

But I don't drag race, I autocross, it would be perfect for me, but I'd rather not try to sort out the C4's over/understeer. What the track dimensions though, anybody know?
i was just showing that it is possible. i had seen a 4th gen with the swap done but i couldnt find any links, that was years ago.

I know Paul, just adding that in case anyone was going to research him.

I don't understand, wouldn't you have to sort out over/understeer (setup) for any car?

If it still has similar problems as the C3's, it has camber issues.
BonzoHansen
08-25-2009, 08:39 AM
What does that mean?
Blacdout96
08-25-2009, 08:45 AM
C4 rears had it especially because of the geometry when you brake into a corner, I forget the exact problems, but when you decelerate, the centerline for the suspension is raised too high, and has a tendency to snap the rear, and also changes the camber drastically. granted doing a swap like this would certainly need alot of custom parts, meaning theres no kit that could automatically correct it, hell you could install it right and still have the bad geometry. It's just that I havent heard alot of neg. feedback on C5 IRS sysytems, which would probably don't have alot of the problems the C4 rears had. Once again, even using a rear like that, applying it to our cars could change the geometry.
Edit: Bill beat me to it lol
WildBillyT

What does that mean?
In the 63-82 setup the bottom strut rod is mounted in rubber, so it can "lengthen" during hard cornering and introduces positive camber. And I think that there is also some positive camber introduced when the driveline wears, since the half shafts are the upper control arms. This is why a lot of C2 and C3 guys install "smart struts" which are rod ended adjustable control arms, like adjustable LCAs in a 4th gen just mounted sideways.

Oh, ok, oe part issues. That sounds like it can be at least partially overcome with better parts.

Partially, yes. Wheelhop is also an issue if you have a lot of torque, and the traction bar for the C3 IRS welds to the bottom of the car so you lose some more ground clearance.
