Anyone have any articles/experience in drilling auxiliary oiling holes in the upper part of the main bearing housings for the purpose of spraying the underside of the piston and cooling it?

With the enhanced reverse flow cooling that the LT1 provides, there really is no need to dive into that kind of territory. A properly set-up cooling system will be plenty for an LT1.

Yea but reverse cooling is great for the heads, but this focuses on the pistons.

I don't have the details, but maybe Unstable Bob will chime in , I believe his LT1 is set up for it?

Just an FYI, Oil cooling for the piston is really done for endurance racing where the engine is held in high RPMs for extended periods. Short burst on off the throttle you really don't need it.

I was thinking more along the lines of a heavy shot of nitrous, and again, just reading and was curious what real world applications there was.

ive heard of it, i have a chevy sbc book by david vizard that mentions this with some pics, but it doesnt really do that much into detail. Pretty much you drill the hole through the main, pointing towards the centerline of the piston, just in front of the connecting rod small end when the piston is halfway down its stroke. A metering jet of some kind is pressed into the hole, and a small connecting slot is machined into the main saddle to connect the new hole to the mains oil feed hole.

As far as procedures, angles, metering jets, machining afterwords ect. I have no idea,

Got the idea from that same book ;)

It looks like a good idea in theory, but again, I would need to talk to a machinist to see if A) they even would attempt it B) If so, what it would cost.

another option, which is much more expensive im sure, is to convert to dry sump and use a system with built in piston cooling. I have seen some on ebay for gen1's, not sure if they make them for the lt1.

Yea, the ones for the LSX styled dr sump are like 60 bucks a pop.... quite expensive.

Oh yea, for the whole setup, I was referring to the jets you can buy to add in oil cooling.

ahh

im still kicking myself for passing up a new ls9 block that was on ebay a few months back for 1500 bux... complete with the piston cooling jets and everything

It is a very cool set up, and not hard to do. My engine builder is looking to run some pretty high RPMs with my engine [he's a n/a NASCAR type build up fan], so I figured I better throw every thing possible in there to help. I'm probably also going to do a valve spring oil cooling spray set up, too.

It's been a while, but ubg thinks it was a couple of hun for the parts, and ubg doesn't remember what the machine shop charged to set it up. It could be done at home with a drill and some careful planning, but ubg already had the block in the shop for some work, so he just had them do it.

well thats the thing, my crank is only set in right now, so im not too deep into the build, question is, would it be worth it to get installed. I want to run road races, and I know I'll be seeing high rpms, and I wouldn't even think of installing these myself.

Aren't you building a V6? If so, I don't know if Bo Laws' has a set up for you.

Yeah 3.8...... It wouldn't hurt to ask to see if his kit would fit my engine, but im already ready for the answer :(
