View Full Version : Bring car or no

Cannot decide whether or not I want to take my Z to college. Basically it would stay in a enclosed parking garage unless I need to get food, or if there are any car meets up north.

Parking garage rivals a federal prison in security, so not concerned there.

Thoughts?

LTb1ow

Not really going to use it much... its Newark... costs extra to have a car... etc... much cheaper to take train home...

True... But is it worth saving the money but not being able to see your car for weeks in a row?:-?

Well I will most likely be home almost every weekend... NJIT is a commuter school and I may try to get a weekend job... IDK

Save the money. If you run into a situation where you really need it is there a way to bring it up just for a week/weekend?

Maybe, I can add on parking on a monthly basis, so that wouldn't be huge.

Just stuck on needing a modus of transportation to get food and what not.

I'd leave it home. NJIT isn't in the best part of town. The parking garage is only marginally better than being on the street or in a lot. You won't really have a need for it, except to get to and from school, but you already said the train is cheaper. And at least with the car at home, you can concentrate on school, not worry about whether or not the car is being scratched, dinged, abused, stolen, vandalised, or otherwise mis-treated.

When I was a freshman in 91 I took my 1968RS Camaro to school (Glassboro State) occasionally and regretted it every single time. Constantly worrying about the car. Bring a car, fine, but its college....get a POS for that kinda duty. MY POS was a 1979 Olds Cutlass with T-tops, full factory gauges, tach, console, buckets, power everything that I picked up for $750. Had the anemic 260 V8, had almost no oil pressure but ran like a top for the next 4 years. I sold it with 150,000 on it, never left me stranded.

Ehh, try to find other ways around it. If not, then take it with you. Is it going to be safe at home? ha

No, you'll just end up driving other people around. And Newark FTL.

Some friends of mine who went to NJIT have had issues with car vandalism but they were commuters and it was before they had the parking garage.

Jen (bandit88) brings her car all the time...I would say she'd be the best bet for first hand informtion/opinion.

Drive through that part of Newark all the time......leave your car at home!!!

Not to mention every Kid/Guy in Newark with an import is gonna want to race you. Drove the Iroc there once, never again. Nice American cars get waaaaaay to much attention in Newark. Do yourself a favor.

Nah, you're not gonna really need it there. The good thing about Newark is that everything is near you and you really don't need a car.

I just got back from dropping my girlfriend off at college. Dont bring your Camaro. I wouldnt. There are people opening doors without care, and driving like teenagers...which they are. I thought to myself just today you wont see me bringing my car here, and IF I do Im parking on the moon...

even if it was in a good area i would say not to bring it. my last girlfriend brought her dents eve3rywhere now.

That and my brother had his up in albany at school he has two dents that care calling for new fenders. Alot of people dont have any consideration at school for any of your stuff.

QFT, I sort of work in Newark and it is much like any other city really. You can walk everywhere basically. I dont know where NJIT is though, I thought the only campus was in Ewing

Its only a few blocks from the train station really, not too bad to get anywhere

That may be the college of NJ you are thinking of.

I know NJIT's frat houses are on high street, or now MLK.

NO. Do not bring your car to Newark. The parking garage may be safe enough but other places in the area are not.

I voted leave it home. If I remember correctly, NJIT, ECC and Rutgers Newark are all right in the same general area. Not the greatest. I wouldn't trust ANY parking garage in Newark for leaving a vehicle overnight every day, even if security seems good. Leave the car home; someone's gonna steal from it or eff it up somehow.

Newark's gotten a little better, but if you feel the need to go out for a late snack, don't go alone. It's still Newark.

I always had my car with me, wherever I went. With that said, I wouldn't leave an unattended turd in Newark...

Hook it up
all my classes are on College Ave, but I'm over on Busch this year. Busing is gonna suck; and I doubt I'll find an open meter.

the NJIT parking garage isn't so bad. I had my truck in there yesterday. Kinda close with the low ceiling but it fit. :)

Years ago, my friend's younger brother went to Rutgers, and cruised up to the Newark campus one night for a party. A few hours later, his Mustang GT was gone. They found it stripped and burned a week later in an abandoned lot somewhere in Newark.

Please, leave your car home.
