am i the only guy who still blinks the high beams on and off a few times when he sees a cop speeding trap for oncoming motorists to notify them???

did this today to warn a few people..(there was a pig...ahem, i mean police officer, hiding behind a tree in a cruiser..) and 2 of them stuck their hands out the windows like i was trying to blind them on purpose...

geez...some people...

any of you still do this?

i drive a truck and i'll do it occasionally to other truckers to warn them but i never do it to cars. fyi it is illegal to do that!! you could get a ticket for it.

and c'mon besides being ignorant "pig" went out in the 70's

I do sometimes, depending on how far past the cop i am, the direction he's pointed, and the car coming. The majority of people today assume that you're telling them their high beams are on, and flash back or turn on their high beams constant. So sometimes i don't bother.

It's not illegal to warn oncoming motorist, but it depends on how you warn them that makes it illegal.

How can it not be seen as obstruction of some type?

it probably falls into the same categorical argument of entrapment

edit: ill do it if i see someone hauling ass, late at night, or when people are leaving a bar

Catching speeders is entrapment?? "Speed Trap" is a colloquialism.

well not really entrapment....entrapment is more of a cop telling somebody you can speed here, we never patrol that. then putting a cop there and giving him a ticket. like a cop tricking somebody into doing something so they can ticket them...similarly if i were to tell somebody its ok to park here, then tow them anyway.

it is 100 percent illegal to warn oncoming motorists of a police officers presence down the road. not to mention illegal to flash your highbeams at oncoming cars anyway. so either way its against the law.

just like its illegal to wave a cop ahead of you.

I don't flash the high beams, usually flash the headlights on/off a few times. Less blinding

well what is legal and what is illegal?

also..it was daylight out so i dont think one or two high beam blinks was blinding anyone...

the way i see it..this road was a 25mph road...with next to nothing on it..should be at least 35mph..and couldve even been 45mph without it being an issue to anyone's safety.. 25 mph on this road feels like ur practically walking...its rediculous..

so if they're out to bend you over and stick thier hand in ur pocket, then i feel justified warning people..as i hope someone would do for me

I sometimes do it, depending on how close to the cop and such. I've rarely gotten it done back to help. Never in retaliation. Then again I live in the boonies.

honestly i dont do it. serial killers, kidnappers, etc. have all been caught in the past due to motor vehicle stops..who knows who you are warning. plus its not my fault if someone else gets caught speeding, im not paying their ticket.

I flashed once just at a car that cut me off.

Got a ticket for "improper use of highbeams"

Now granted, the cop also saw/heard me going through the intersection tires screeching and racing off from the light... so i didnt mind the ticket...:-D

I don't know of any law that states you cannot warn oncoming traffic of an officer's presence. I do know that there is a statute against flashing high beams at oncoming traffic (N.J.S. 39: 3-58), but I don't know of one that specifically says you can't warn others about a cop ahead. If anyone's going to prove me wrong, it's probably Jim.

I was always told it can be considered "obstruction of justice" or something if you warn oncoming traffic of the presence of an officer by any means.

yeah, I just read up on some stuff, and peopel waved, or gave some indication, and said it was obstruction of justice, or interfering with police work, and what not, if they don't get you on one thing, I'm sure they'll find somethign else to hit you on.

I got saved twice from people flashing me about hidden cops. So I always return the favor.

And its def 100% illegal. But really, who cares.

What law says it's illegal? I haven't seen one yet....

A LEO has already posted in the thread saying that warning oncoming drivers is not illegal...however flashing your high beams (regardless of the purpose) is illegal.
