well the old 305 in the 88 camaro that was TBI, then TPI and is now carb'd is just freakin pathetic lol... i have minimal cash to spend since im saving for another toy, however i like to drive the 3rd gen, but its truely embarasing. the valve seals are SHOT, making huge clouds of smoke in the parking lot at work isnt so fun! the timing chain is clanking away and its got a great tickticktick on exceleration, not to mention its slow as balls and has a WELL BEATEN 90k miles on it! i dont need anything killer, just for cruising around with...

i checked ebay quick while at work for cheap crate engines and came across this company from arizona that sells rebuilt, slightly performance oriented engines for what i think is a decent price, esp compared to say jasper garbage...

u think thatd swap into my 88 directly? and wata u think a shop would charge to do the install?

Before I'd go shipping my hard earned buck-a-roos waaaaaaay across the country for ?????? in a crate, I'd hit up our sponsors for a quote on a build/install/tune. I'd personally deal with Josh @ JS Performance. Even though he's a funny looking Hillbilly with crappy taste in beer, he does top notch work and will work with you and yer wallet. Plus he does it all from the build to the install to the varoom, varoom...down the road you go with a big smile on yer puss.

If you decide to build something let me know. I have a lot of sbc parts left over from a recent build. I'll also be pulling the heads off of my car hopefully soon if your interested in those. They have about 10k miles on them since i got the engine from jasper.

I can get a list of stuff together if your interested.

Check GM. You can get new for near that price. Add some good heads & a cam when you get cash and you're good.

i was looking at the 1st and 3rd ones u posted, since they are also TBI/centerbolt engines. wats the stock power on those and wats the differance between those 2? i believe the 3rd one was in the heavy duty trucks? more torque? and what do i need if i get a 4-bolt vs 2-bolt, mines a 2-bolt now

would a vortec 350 work? would the carb manifold work from my 88?

If it's a centerbolt style then yes.

awesome... the vortec seems to make some decent power, if i can move escalades/tahoes i think itll handle the camaro lol

if you want to tackle a rebuild i have a 4 bolt block that needs a bore for 200 bucks. Has a good bottom end. Needs like 4-500 in machine work and heads. not a bad deal and a good learning experience!!

If it's a centerbolt style then yes.

Actually, the centerbolt heads are the same pattern from '87-'95ish, 305 or 350. The Vortec heads use a different intake bolt pattern - they have 4 on each side that just go straight down into the head. The older centerbolt heads have the bolts going into the heads on an angle.

Mike, if you have an aftermarket intake already from when you converted it to a carb, it ~may~ be machined to use on Vortec heads.

Dammit, I knew this, too. You are right. If it's an 8 bolt Vortec manifold then it will. If not, it will not and you shouldn't try to convert it. Vortec manis are not that expensive.

Does he need to consider fuel pumps with any of the engines listed? I'm not sure what he is using for a FP now, or if any of the ones listed create concerns, like no FP boss or no FP eccentric on the cam. Hopefully he is still using an in-tank one and a FP regulator so this is moot.

FWIW- That ebay motor accepts a mechanical pump.

But you have to make sure the cam has a lobe to drive the pump pushrod.

my intank pump is from when the car was TPI, with a return regulator to work with the carb.

i assume someone makes a vortec carb manifold?

That I can answer with confidence. Yes. 2116 is the Edelbrock performer, 7116 is the performer RPM, 7516 is the RPM Air Gap. There are others as well, those are just what I remember.
