Why is it that motorcycles can be loud as hell, but cars get nailed on dB levels etc?

I really can't stand how obnoxiously loud motorcycles can be...

I got straight drags with no baffles on my bike. Louder bike means killer cars will notice me more

But is that legal for you to have it loud? Or do cops/DMV just not care?

there is a legal limit for bikes !!! the cops do have a decimal meter to check this but they don't enforce it cause alot of them do ride themselves. about 2 yrs. ago they did have a lil enforcement they were doing required by the state but then it just faded away.
also most guys with real loud pipes go to private inspection or swap the baffles in for dmv

It's annoying isn't it?

Yea, just asking cause there was a parade locally and the stupid bikers were doing laps around the area.... so loud.

stop whining.

He's right. The cops are constantly harassing cars for their exhausts while the white trash bikers can ride around at all hours of the night waking people up. That's the way it is around here anyway.

bikes are low visible vehicles, they can be in blind spots and very easily get mowed over by distracted motorists....hence the loudness of the motorcycle is to make it more noticeable

Oh please...is that the justification? Then the Hon-duh cruisers shouldn't be on the road...their more quiet than a Prius lol

Loud motorcycles are extremely obnoxious and I always wondered why they don't do something about it because there are a lot more on the road now compared to 10 years ago. I saw in the paper where New Hope PA is going to try cut down on the motorcycle noise. It will be interesting to see how that goes over since the town is invaded pretty much every weekend with loud bikes.

Yeah, they've been talking about that for years. I doubt anything meaningful will happen. At the end of the day money talks and the ******** walks. Those bikers bring a TON of $$$ into that area.

problem is they kind of don't, from what I have read. They passed a law in New Hope mandating only 1 bike per parking spot in an effort to push them out, but the courts threw it out.

Frosty

Yeah I remember them trying to pass that law, I totally forget it was thrown out. They do bring in a lot of money but the residents are getting fed up. I don't blame them, it's a quiet area. Maybe things have changed, I haven't been there in a few years(which is odd since I'm not far from it).

And yet they passed a law limiting the noise from the jet-skis and waverunners on the river! :-?

I own an obnoxiously loud bike....drag pipes with just an eye bolt as a torque cone to create some backpressure. I do it because I can get away with it and it's "cool". Pretty sure there is a decible limit and they are supposed to check it during inspection.

The majority of the noise is directed behind the bike so the loud pipes save lives justification is mostly bogus with some rare exceptions. Really I think it's kind of let go because the majority of bikes are pleasure use only and don't make up a very large percentage of the overall traffic on the road. The law has bigger problems to concern themselves with.

Granted you shouldn't be doing full throttle blasts through local neighborhoods or running your bike in your driveway late at night....but that's common sense....and most people in general don't have any.
