So I just got back from a job interview, and as I'm pulling into a parking spot at my girlfriend's apartment complex, a little Indian kid on a bike comes rushing up to my car. He couldn't have been more than 6 years old.
I had the windows rolled down, so he came up to me and starts scanning my firebird up and down and says "whhooooaaaaaa.... that's a coooooool carrrrrr". I decide to make his day (and mine) and rev the engine a couple times. Now, to pre-face this, it's the stock 5.0 HO with a nearly full-stock exhaust, except for the Dynomax muffler--it's got a nice rumble, but not exactly deafening.
The kid JUMPS and starts running away (well, biking away)! I yelled to him, "hey buddy, don't worry, it's just the engine!" So he slowly creeps back to the car (by that time I'm out of my firebird and have turned it off), looks up at me and asks, "Why did your car make that loud noise?"
I explained to him that it was just the engine, and that's when it hit me--I look around this apartment complex and all of the cars around me are hybrid Hondas and Toyota Prius' and the works. This kid has probably never been exposed to a "real" engine before, and at the rate the eco-nuts are throwing money into electric cars, it's a sheer possibility that the next generation may never know what an engine is! They'll be surrounded by electric motors instead.
Thoughts?
