View Full Version : Motor Swap Progress

NJ346
11-03-2009, 09:30 PM
Over the next few days I will be tearing apart a perfectly good working LS powered camaro to accomplish one goal: go faster! I will be swapping in a motor that has 80K miles while taking the 185K mile one out. Since the engine is sitting on a stand, I thought it'd be a good time to add some goodies to it. I started tearing it down tonight, and here is how far I got.

Now a shortblock:

Some new valvetrain parts:-P

Over the next few days I will be taking pictures and posting progress of the build. My plans are to have the motor back together by thursday night, and work from friday-Sun to get the car back up and running. Check the classifieds section for cheap LS1 parts!

While everyone was bickering back and forth, I was outside getting some work done. Stock cam, lifters, oil pump, crank pulley, etc. are out...now it's time to start cleaning up the motor and then the new goodies will start going on. Goal for tonight: Get new cam, oil pump, oil pan, lifters, timing chain, and pulley back on the motor. While I was out in the garage the new clutch from monster arrived. The real fun starts tomorrow when the heads go on tomorrow and then the tear down of the car starts.

Just 2 pics of progress:

so are the cam specs a secret?

Until I get a few passes out on the track-yes. Some people have had great results with this cam...others have had ok results. It's not huge(not even the size of a MS3 cam).

I'm only throwing on stock ls6 heads...don't have the money for a port and polish job.

The new cam, oil pump, timing chain, and front cover are installed. As well as the valley cover was installed. Also, the pistons and block were cleaned up(still gotta clean up some more tomorrow).

Well I didn't get as far as I planned to today because of the machine shop...didn't get the heads until 5 pm. The new motor is just about done, just needs the intake manifold and crank pulley thrown on. Once it's on the k-member I'm putting a new rear main seal on it. I also started tearing down the car tonight. About an hour more of work and I'll be ready to lift the body off of the frame.

I'll post pictures when everythings done..been too busy working on the car.

Progress of today:
Took off the wheels.
Dropped the k-member
Unbolted trans
Installed new slave cylinder
Un wired the harness from the motor
All accessories stripped off the old motor
Old motor taken off k-member
New rack and pinion installed.
New motor placed on k-member
Started wiring

Tomorrow:
Finish wiring
Install new rear main seal
Install clutch
Rebolt trans
Finish wiring
And if there's enough time bolt it back up to the body.
Then sunday I'll spend the day going over things and have it back on the road by mid day.

NJ346
11-07-2009, 08:05 AM
I was going to try keeping the wheels on, but as I pulled the body off, the struts kicked out and it would have been a pain in the ass to have a dolly on the trans and have 2 people hold the struts so we could move it around. I'm making it work. Here's some pics of the progress from yesterday:

Looks like some good progress. At least you're working on your F-body! I've spent the last 4 weeks working on my 4Runner and finally got it through inspection this week. I still need to do a few more things and it will be ready for the winter. And now with the SS sitting in the garage, I'm starting to think about doing some more mods to that.

sweetbmxrider
11-07-2009, 10:39 AM
i did the same thing with the struts kicking out, now i disconnect the strut from the lower a arm and take the spindle nut off the upper. i think its a little easier.

oh yeah, get new front brake hoses  those puppies don't like stretch!

NJ346
11-07-2009, 12:14 PM
Lunch break time. Motor is all wired. New clutch is on. Another 45 mins worth of work and it'll be ready to start going back on the body. I need to wait for some help to show up before I can do that. Majority of the work was done by me, with 2 friends helping move stuff around/get me tools. I'll probably take my time wiring up everything back to the body, but if I can get the K-member back up into the body by 5 tonight, it might see life tonight :D. If not, tomorrow morning it should be running. Can't wait. After looking at the mess of wires/bare k-member last night, I was questioning whether I would be able to get this thing back together, but it's starting to look like something again. I'll post up late tonight on how far I got today.

Yea, but I was having some issues with what I thought was a pressure plate issue. Turns out the slave cylinder was leaking pretty good and contaminated the clutch.

Progress for today:
New motor completely wired
New clutch and pressure plate installed
Headers re-installed
Trans re installed
K-member bolted to the body

Left for tomorrow morning:
Wiring the harness and putting the computer back in the car.
Add all fluids
Connect coolant lines
Bleed the clutch and breaks
Connect the torque arm to trans
Bolt in drive shaft
Start it up and take it for a spin:nod:

all of this rain is really pissing me off. I've been able to rip on it a few times when it was dry out...2nd gear at ~40mph, just lights the tires up. It'll see the track in 2 weeks...time to start driving some more...has 125 miles on the setup right now.

we did, they even took the crank pulley off and reinstalled it and it kept doing it. Gave a nice little 5 hp peak at ~6600:wink:. The tensioner has been squeaking, so I'll get a new one before I hit the track. It makes peak power at ~6200(like i said, not a big cam at all), so I might be good on the street.

Driveability is pretty much stock with the exception of a little cam surge when cold between 1100-1300rpm. Not sure what kind of gas mileage I'm going to get, but I'm pretty sure I'll still be seeing 23+ mpg hwy. Can't wait until it dries up here and I can start toying with it.

Ive had a 228/232 .614/.598 on 111+2 sitting in my room waiting to go in since summer, Haha. How was driveability on the stock tune?

idle was ok after about 10 seconds...stalled occasionally...pig rich down low...lean as all hell above 3.5K. I spent $60 on gas in the past week to go ~200 miles....wasn't fun.

What injectors do you have right now? And don't worry about racing after next Thursday, it's gonna get cold as heck so there won't be any good racing left after this Tue or Wed.

you can still get traction aslong as you do it right, i can hook all winter long(with the exception of snow or ice of course)

With the new tire setup I'm running, traction should be a non-issue.

It seems like more people break when it gets really cool out and other people can't get traction. I know cool air makes more power but if it's too cold it seems to cause a lot more problems. Hopefully the weather holds up for you.

average numbers for this setup:lol:. All numbers and cam specs will be posted after the 29th....just gotta keep "downshift" guessing since they keep their crap on the down low:wink:

yeah just so you know my shocks held me back ALOT when i had stockers. you may want to look into something adjustable or if you need to keep it cheap throw some KYB GR2s on it, theyre fairly stiff and should keep the tires planted

I gotta work out the initial bugs of this setup and then I'll work on suspension next year.

stock shocks & springs might work for him...... they have 185k on them. so should be shot allowing car to squat decently.

thats the old timers cheap way out. don't have $ for drag springs/shocks.... then pull them out of a junkyard car w/200k on them.

you've also got to remember that the intake manifold and rear are playing a factor in those numbers. Dyno numbers are only numbers...the real test will be at the track on Sunday.

yeah the problem is that they arent putting enough pressure down at that point. theres a video somewhere around here where you can see my tires jump into the wheel wells because the shocks are so blown

WELL.......I never said "blown shocks" I said high mileage. being that the springs & shocks are soft from the mileage. it is obvoius that a blown shock will cause the suspension to bounce/wheel hop etc... but if shocks are decent the soft/worn out springs will allow it to squat and with enuff power the car will keep it squatted.....

Squatting is good.... thats weight transfer which plants the tires to the pavement = traction

anyway it was just a comment, i make enough $ i can buy drag shocks & springs new out of the catalog. a matter of fact i could probably buy everyone on this forum shocks/springs.

Vin good luck on the 29th and pm me if you need anything in a pinch.

Again, squatting is BAD. Weight transfer is good but the rear suspension should actually push away from the body or rise.

Cool Video of build. I think the numbers are pretty good for untouched LS6 heads and that cam. Compare it to guys running the Torquer series cams if you need some reference numbers.

Do you have a dyno graph you could post up? What head gaskets did you go with?

I haven't had a chance to scan the dyno graph yet. The power band comes on nicely. It has over 300 tq at the wheels by 2800 rpm..peak power at 6200. I went with Felpro perma-blues for the head gaskets. The whole motor has felpro gaskets on it since I felt they were superior to anything else, and this motor will get a beating like anything else I drive:lol:.

the rear axle should be a pivot point, it should not squat. i have 12 way adjustables with it set almost as firm as it will go, i understand that you mean weight transfer when you say squat, but squating means the back tires tucking up in the wheel wells, and its NEVER GOOD. you want the front to lift and the rear to stay firm.

btw no one cares how much money you make.
