Anyone know how this works? lol Are there free places or are there only private shops that do it?

Anyone know a decent place to take my car to get it inspected?
Car is a '08 Saturn, only thing currently "illegal" is the tint on the side windows(5%). I have no problem removing it and re-tinting them in accordance with NYS law(70% only), but i just need to get the car inspected ASAP once i arrive back in the states. The inspection expired in May while i was here in Afghanistan , and NY does not extend it for deployed soldiers(NJ does).

When im home in NJ, im close to the NJ/NY border around Tappan NY, so id be looking for a shop or location in that area. I think i could have the car inspected for $10 on base, but i wont be brining the car all the way to upstate NY until most of the winter season is over.

There are no state facilities that I am aware of, only private places. I pass my Camaro with tints and a cam.

i would find out first. some shops are really anal (trying to get you to do repairs there) while others are relaxed. I get mine done by a friend that obviously overlooks the cam and tints and other apparent issues. I took the saturn to another guy one day when he wasn't around and the guy spent 45 minutes looking for something to fail it for.

DoD regs say you don't have to get your car inspected in the state you're stationed in, but the one you are from, so NJ if you so choose. Not sure which state is easier

hmm i figured since it was registered in NY, i would need a NYS inspection...
maybe the regulations mean like if im stationed in ny and the car is registered in say texas, i could inspect it in ny since thats where the car is. who knows.

if i can find a place that would over look the tints id be happy. cuz yes they are "illega"l but in NY by base, i will not get hassled for them, and then when im back home in NJ, i dont get bothered for them either cuz they see the NY state plates. So i'd like to keep it all NY.

As far as everything else goes, everything is stock. The tune and CAI are GMPP items and the C.A.R.B. stickers are in place under the hood. No emissions stuff has been touched either.

Im just still annoyed i got a ticket for expired inspection while i was visiting my girl at her place in Queens during my R&R in sept. I requested an online hearing for the violation and explained i am currently deployed and so forth. Ill know how that turns out in 45 days or so lol.

Now my SS, thats registered in NJ and already inspected as a collector vehicle, ill deal with renewing that inspection when i get home as well but shouldnt be too bad.

I just like being able to choose NY or NJ hehe

...Oh, and the car is a 2008 Saturn with like 11,000 miles only. Shouldnt fail for anything.

There's a loophole in the DoD regs for car inspections. Several of the people I worked with figured it out and used it to their advantage. Technically, the rule is that you have two addresses, your duty station, and your 'home' address. If your home address is in a different state than your duty station and you register your cars to that address and you are stationed in a different state, then the reg says that you are not required to inspect the car for the state you are stationed in, and since you are stationed in a state that is not your registered home state, then the MPs/SPs/DoD Police cannot enforce any action requiring you to have, or renew your car inspection as it would be a 'financial hardship' to have to drive each of your cars out of state to get them inspected. One guy on McGuire had a Camaro and removed all the EGR stuff, AIR, cats, etc. and since he was from Arizona, they couldn't make him drive the car there to get it inspected. Another guy had a vette and did the same, and he was from Philly. Even though Philly is only 45 minutes from McGuire, it's still out of state and they couldn't make him drive there to get it inspected as it was still technically out of state. This loophole works if you are constantly stationed out of state, and being that there are no active duty Army bases in NJ, you're good. However, whenever you drive your cars in NJ, you are liable if you get pulled over. The loophole only applies to base security hassling you and being able to get away with it out of state. Most of the MPs/SPs/DoD Police don't understand this rule and need it to be shown to them, as my friend from Philly had to do. I'm not sure if they changed the rule or not, but this is how it was three years ago.

ah ok yeah that makes sense, however, the SKY is registered to my base/barracks address in Ft Drum, NY. so basically that doesnt apply to that car. However it would apply to my SS and anything else i have registered still in NJ.
