the guy has an 88 IROC and his wife has an 89 GTA. he got this car to be a driver because he's building up the IROC. he had it parked for a bit and the city sent him a complaint. so he put it up for sale, if he couldn't sell it he was going to buy it. I called him 2 hours after he posted it and picked the car up the next day.

the clutch was really sticky for some reason and wouldn't fully disengage. it took 5 or 6 tries just to get the car to roll out of the shop after that it was just a tad sticky. I need to get some street time on it and that will go away

55 in 5th gear I think, I didn't torque the head right and she over heated on me. I know it had a little knock last year because it was spun past 7k on a stock HEI. so i think the overheating was just a catalyst to the big picture. I don't think getting slammed into a tree at 70mph helped either

ehh basically it comes down to me rushing a build and going against what i know
I should have rebuilt the bottom end...
I didn't
I shouldn't have ran 11:1CR on a 2 bolt main...
I did
I shouldn't have spun a knocking motor to 6k...
i did
but, I knew the knock meant death. I needed to rebuild anyway and I've had a bare 4 bolt 010/020 hi-perf block sitting at the engine shop for a few months now. so now I need to force my self to take my time, do it right, and not be an *******.

11:1 CR on a 2 bolt is nothing, tons of guys with LT1s doing 11.5:1 on 2 bolt mains with pump gas.
bubba428
11-26-2009, 06:30 AM
exactly, LT1. I'm talking about a gen1 with HEI. you've said it yourself, opti it a very accurate spark system. HEI, ehhh not so much, at least on its own anyway. having higher compression doesn't help with high rpm detonation either. LT1s also have reverse cooling to help keep the heads cool to avoid that. If it wasn't for the piss poor location of the opti LT1 would be the way to go. its all good though. build, break, repeat right?

Plenty of people have gone 11:1 on gen 1 2 bolts. Sounds like you know what your issues were, though. I wonder if something happened to the inside of the motor when it got cracked up as it was running at the time.

the wrist pin was loose, I didn't want to do the bottom end on that engine while it was apart because I have a 4 bolt 010/020 block i'm going to do forged internals on. no point repairing something i'm going to replace in a month. I thought i'd be ok for a little so I took the gamble and lost. at this point i'm just gonna check the condition of the heads, cam and oil pump and start moving part over to the 4 bolt. getting a stroker kit, same cam, heads and a better distributor as I want to spin it to 6500-7000rpm. getting a 750 holley and the same single plane intake.

like a stronger(010/020) 4 bolt block and stroker?

If you scattered a lot of metal in the motor I'd trash the cam and oil pump. Replacements are not that expensive.

+1, if your going to do it right do everything right. talk to someone that specs cams for a living about a cam to get the most out of it.
