Ive had my white 98 parked for a few months now and I start it up every now and then. Had it running this past sunday and it ran great started it up today while I was putting the trash out and it started backing a ticking/sewing machine noise. The noise goes up and down with the rpm and putting a screwdriver up to my ear and onto the motor the sound is throughout the fuel rail and injectors, the fpr is the loudest. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Did you put fuel stabilizer in the tank?

No stabilizer, fresh premium was put in before it started to sit, fuel is still good/smells good.

i also felt it in the fuel rails too...and im not sure if i got a bad tank of gas or not cause it smells different than usual but i put stabilizer in it and my dad said that might make it smell a little different....

Aren't the I injectors just loud. I'm pretty sure that's what the ticking sound is. Mone does to but I always thought it was a combo of a rockers and injector sound. Sounds nothing serious on mine atleast

Piston slap gets more pronounced this time of year. Does the noise go away after the car warms up for 4 or 5 minutes?

Noise does not go away as it gets warmed up, this is not piston slap or normal injector noise.

One clear day this week I'll pull it in the garage and take the valve covers off and give an update.

There should be stuff at pep boys to help you. I'd go get some of it, then add it to the tank and fill up with fresh premium. It may not be the solution, but it's a good place to start. Gas does go bad.

I don't think this is a bad gas issue, this cold weather is killing me with trying to get the car in the garage. Listening on the valve covers there is no knock/tick nor on the headers or intake. I have a feeling something in the bottom end is making noise or something flexplate related.

did not think gas would go bad that quickly.
The octane boost you are talking about won't do anything, it increases your octane rating by .01 or .1 cant remember which one.
i hope it isnt coming form the valve train since the rockers arent adjustable, how the oil pressure?

Rockers can make noise if the bearings fail, oil pressure is at 40psi but that's with 10w30 and it being balls cold outside, I won't let the car run long enough to get to operating temp.

Didn't the 98's have issues with the bottom end compared to the 99-02?

Are you talking about the rod bolts? I believe that was from 98-00.
I have a 02 and it piston slaps like a MFer. Doesnt matter how cold or hot it is. It has done that now for 70,000 miles That I have owned Shaniqua ( cars name). I just dont even pay attention to it. I know the difference between piston slap sound and a Rod knock. Untill I hear it change tone I will dissmiss it. Hopefully something major happens to the motor in the next year when it is still covered under warrenty..

Will know in a couple days, top end and accessory drive is off the motor.(This sound got worse, im pretty sure its someone knocking in the bottom end to come out.)

Motor has been out of the car, pulled it apart saw no major damage to my eyes, still don't know what was making the sound. Block crank and rods will be used to build a budget motor for my black 98 and I have a 408 in the works to go in this white 98 winterish '10.
