You are thinking of the Zextel Torsen version that is OEM in the F-body. This is a much heavier duty version of an all gear LSD by Eaton.

Its Summit Racing brand. I wanted the Richmond, but they were back ordered. They will be more than adequate for my application.

Interesting idea. The gears come with a break-in coating, and specific instructions on how to break them in. Not sure how Micronite would work with a coating. The coating will probably have to be removed first, which would void the warranty.
Anyway, its a little overkill for a daily driver, no?

It's as much of an overkill as that Eaton for a DD ;)

Break in coating? When you break in gears you are work hardening them.

dont have any problems with mine, works well and is very smooth, quite and niver make a sound. I've never had any problems with it clicking and popping in turns and such. Mine is in a moser 9" though, maybe the problems are with improper setup?

ehh i think its just drag racing and beating them to hell. not positive though but i'm sure it can work fine in certain applications.

Probably!!! But the Tracloc cost less than the less desirable clutch units on the market. Go figure.

Ooops! LOL! You caught me mixing up my LSD's! Of course, I meant Truetrac. And seeing as we are being nit-picky, take note the correct name is Truetrac, not Tru-Trac.

I am not being as nit picky as you may think. A TrueTrac is what you own. A Traction-Lok is what I own, in my 9". It is a clutch type LSD.

Lol. Fixed. Although I am still calling it by the right name, just incorrectly spelled.
Oh, and what "break in coating" is on the gears?

The dark grey coating on the gears is phosphorus. I was under the impression that it was there to assist with load break in. But I'm not exactly sure what the purpose of the phosphorus coating is. It could be just for corrosion protection. Whatever its function, I read in many places that the gear oil should be drained after the first 500 miles to remove any metal partickes and the phosphorus coating that will wear off.
So I know the grey stuff is phosphorus, just unsure what its function is.

I found this, and a few other websites that talk about phosphorus coating and maganese coatings that assist in break in process and reduce wear.
From sciencedirect.com:
The wear resistance of manganese phosphate coatings on steel and cast iron is reviewed. The effect of initial prephosphate chemical treatment on wear resistance was investigated. Treatment in baths based on manganese phosphate improves dry abrasion resistance which is independent of the type of initial chemical treatment. The best results were obtained after etching or etching combined with activation. Phosphate coatings effectively absorb lubricants. Wear resistance is more effective with lower quality lubricants. Phosphate coatings shorten the running-in period during normal service. Unit pressure, velocity of abrasion and the method of lubrication affect the wear process. It is concluded that phosphating enhances wear resistance when this is determined by loss of the base metal.
Bold added by me. Think this is what the coating is for?

Seems like it's there to prevent galling and damage during break in. Hey, if it works, that's good stuff.

Well the gears and Truetrac have been in for a few days, and the car has been driven nice and easy for 150 miles. So I thought its time for an update.
The gears make a slight noise that has diminished some since being installed, and if the gears don't quiet down any more, then I figure a layer of Dynomat over the rear axle hump might help deaden the residual noise. The last few days of driving before having the gears installed the rear seat was in the down position so the rear end could be heard better. I noticed that the factory gears make ever so slight wind noise at 50 mph and higher. Nothing you would notice unless you really listened for it. By comparison, the new Summit 3.73 gears make a distinct "white noise" sound when feathering the throttle and at steady cruise, but no noise accelerating or coasting down.
Yesterday I got to drive the car in the rain. Was pleased to feel the Truetrac doing what it is supposed to. Pulling out of a parking lot into 50 mph traffic would have been a real problem with the previous open rear, spinning one tire and not picking up speed. Now with the Truetrac, the car is much more sure footed, and it scoots right into traffic and accelerates with no wheel spin. Around the roads near my house the tires didn't spin at the usual places; inclined intersections, right hand turns uphill from stop sign, etc. But if too much throttle is applied, the car does what is expected in the wet... locks up the Truetrac and spin both tires.
Today the sun came out and I got to drive on dry pavement. Decided to be a little more aggressive with the throttle. I was surprised to feel both tires break loose on dry pavement with only modest throttle input. I guess 3.73 is really multiplying the torque compared to the old 3.08's.
So its still being driven mildly, no more than half or 3/4 throttle and then only for a short bursts.
Still need to have the PCM updated for the speedo. While that is being done, I figure the fan temps should be lowered to match the new 180* thermostat on order, ( Low Speed On/Off: 194/185 °F - High Speed On/Off: 204/195°F ), and remove the high speed limiter.
A real noticeable change is how quickly the car accelerates even under modest throttle. And long inclines don't feel like the car is straining to get up and lugging the motor. Car is much more responsive to even modest increase in throttle.
I can hardly wait until 500 miles rolls around!!!

Prices worked out like this:
- Eaton Truetrac, 3.73 gears, and pinion install kit with a 10% discount code and free shipping from the "S" store was $505 to my door.
- A 3 series speed sensor ring about $42 delivered.
- Install by a local trans builder $380.
Total: $927.00
Being able to lay 30 ft of posi rubber.... Priceless
