1. Ive seen truck drivers that need to be doing 75-80mph just to make it up a high grade
2. Wonderful change the speed limit all you want but if the traffic flow is all doing a higher speed then that didnt solve anything. Cant be pulled over for going with the flow of traffic.
3. Means i would just be chugging along in 6th gear

Lots of places on the GSP are 55, and the flow doesn't change much at all.
If they enforced the current speed limits versus just letting the "flow of traffic" dictate who gets pulled over by troopers, then maybe the govt. wouldn't have to save us from ourselves.

That fuel efficiency chart is BS. Every car or truck I've had with overdrive got it's best gas mileage at 65-70 mph. 55 mph will result in a loss of gas mileage and an increase in gas/oil use. And the newer 6 speed vehicles would probably get the mileage at 75-80 mph.

Wow that chart is a joke. 55 is way to slow for anyone who travels everyday for work long distances. just driving on a highway that slow would make me want to kill myself

with a 5spd v6 prolly around 65 70 is the best millage anywhere above it a big decrease in economy. just keep the rpms bellow 2000 and you should be fine. i think going 55mph on the highway is dangerous, if everyone is going 70+ people will have to swerve and whatnot to get out of your way witch puts everyone in danger.

I have the automatic also and 65-70 is definitely the best speed for fuel economy. Most engines sweet spot is around the 2200-2500 rpm range. If you change rear gears it will start to throw things off.

that opinion is so outdated. Cars these days are most efficient at a higher speed than once before.

When i had 3:42's i got my best gas milage doing 65mph on cruise control from NJ - northern VA got 32mpg

im at school in michigan and the speed limit is 70 everywhere lol, New jersey should take some notes
That chart is so completely asinine. It's a pet peeve of mine that people actually believe that.
I know that when it comes to my '01 Malibu, I get my best mileage right around 70 mph. With the Camaro (3.42's), I think it's 65-70.

Wouldn't this be hard on the already-slow morning traffic? When the average car made 110 hp and looked like boxes maybe 55 mph was ok, but not today.
This is purely to generate revenue in my opinion. I bet if this happens NJ still keeps the "fines doubled" aspect of the current 65 mph zones.

do you have 2.73's?
i usually try to keep my car below 2k, mainly for drone reduction purposes, but it also seems to help with gas. never really done a long enough 70mph trip to know for sure i guess though.

id say my best is around 70-75mph although i have yet to do a pure highway run without ripping through a gear or two to 'merge' with traffic 8-) 6spd ftw!

Hell, my 05 Dakota is at 2k rpm at 70mph, there's nothing being lost there

yeah... my jeep shifts into od at 45mph, but ill still do 80 on anything that even resembles a highway

Nope, 3.23's. My old 93 Indy Pace Car with automatic and 3.23's and Powerdyne superchager would get 26-28 mpg on the highway at 70 mph.

When I had my TA, I got excellent gas mileage at about 70mph. I went to summer school one year while my family was down the shore. Taking the expressway daily from Ocean City to Philly I used less gas than going from my home in Marlton to Philly. IDK what the mpg was but it was awesome. I would put it in cruise control and be happy to see that gas gauge barely move, vs. taking route 70 stop and go traffic at a much shorter distance. At 55, the TA would be able to cruise in 6th around 1300-1500 rpms, and it would do awesome mpgs.
As for the truck, I give up trying to pull off good mileage. Even trying to drive carefully and slowly as possible yields pathetic gas mileage by comparison.

my 78 isnt that good with going fast and having good mileage, having only 4 gears, she seems to rev kind of high at about 65mph, although that doesnt really stop me lol its the 33yr old suspension that lets the car drift and rumble everywhere that does =P

i used 2 gallons of gas on a round trip of about 50 miles round trip and i was doing 75-80 the whole way then stop n go in the town area in which i was going to but i couldnt have been happier i thought i was going to get killed on the mpgs that day, wrong!

On a side note, I heard that state troopers are doing a ticket blitz on all of the major highways- 287, 78, 195, etc. Each trooper is supposed to write a ticket every 10 minutes to generate about 9 million in state revenue.

I get the best gas mileage when i don't let deadtrend1 drive my cars ;)
in all seriousness 6th gear will suck doing 55 but the beetle would love the slower pace
