PORT-AU-PRINCE, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Haitian government said Friday that the number of people killed in last week's devastating earthquake has surpassed 110,000.
Nearly 200,000 people were injured and more than 600,000 left homeless after the 7.3-magnitude quake hit the small Caribbean nation on Jan. 12, the ministry said.
Haitian officials estimated that the final death toll could reach 200,000.

and what bothers me even more is the united states donated a total of 100 million to relief funds, and the rest of the entire world donated 38 million..and here we are in the middle of an economic crisis and we are solving peoples problems but cant solve our own.

I agree. People make jokes about all types of things everyday, whats different about this. Am I glad it happened, NO, but it happened none the less. Not that they should struggle or suffer, but we are in a crisis of our own, why dont these athletes and celebrities that become rich because of us "the public" give back to our country to relieve our debts. Why does someone have to die for people to start caring. These are all retorical, I dont want a debate but to say to lock a thread is rediculous. If you dont like whats being said, exit the thread.

we're watchin ;) I agree that while this is wildly insensitive, it is not really a targeted (emphasis) joke and really doesn't (yet) offend any of our past notions of what is inappropriate for this forum. Tragic? Yes. So is many ways in which people lose lives that we find humor in. I think its too early, so I didn't contribute to the thread. I advise those who would feel strong emotions for the current situation in Haiti to do the same, but for now, please keep it civil.

In a sense i do think this thread is inappropriate, but at the same time it also puts a few things into perspective. As a member of one of the relief groups in Haiti i think the entire situation is contradictory. As a country we spend millions of dollars interdicting the illegal Haitian immigrants who attempt to "float" their way into Florida, but when an unfortunate situation arises such as a natural disaster like this, we (as a country) drop everything and come to their aid. Personally it makes me wonder where our priorities are at...

How about I crack a joke about 9/11, or Hurricane Katrina,or even Pearl Harbor, would that be funny? NO, it wouldn't, so what makes Haiti any different? Do you guys get enjoyment out of others misfortunes. Immagrants or not, they're still people and they need help!

I would laugh.Humor can be a way of handling a tragedy. and lets not forget these are jokes!Nobody here is happy that people are injured and/or dead but these jokes do no harm. u think ur doing any good for hatians by yelling at people who crack a joke? And as bad is it may sound im glad people here can make a joke about even 9-11, thats a freedom many people in the world dont have and its one of the reasons i love this country.

I'm not about to find sources at 5 AM, but I did hear that we donated so much money, but no actual services. From my source, I was told Isreal flew over doctors and medical equipment, yet we donate all this money but American doctors over there are having to do amputations with saws sterilized in vodka.

The difference is that this could not be controled by man. A person nor a group of people made the quake happen. 9/11 was a group of terrorists. Pearl Harbor was a group of people, the quake was the earth, not caused by souly by humans.

Actually guys, the quake was man made. According to that idiot Danny Glover this is a direct result of global warming and the failed Copenhagen summit.
Let it be known that if Glover and all of his infinite wisdom is saying it then we're partly to blame for this disaster. /sarcasm
People have different senses of humor, I personally won't crack any jokes because it's a shame what those people are going through(though it shouldn't be our financial or military problem, unfortunately we're making it our problem).

I see the similarity is the thousands of people lost their lives at no fault of their own. And I'm ignoring the fact that this particular even killed maybe 60 times more people than Sept 11 because I don't think that is entirely relevant. I'm not really sure how a person doing it vs. a nature makes it any more or less ok.
While one might argue this just bolsters the stereotype held outside of the US that all Americans are selfish, arrogant and classless, I honestly think it is just disassociation at play here. Just about all of us knew someone impacted by Sept 11 and that makes it personal at some level. This Haiti thing is so much more remote to the average American, so it is easier to be flippant about it.
Tim, you are a big USMC supporter, so let me re-ask the question but changing the names: If that was 200 Marines killed by an earthquake and people here decided to tell jokes about it, is that ok with you? Or would you be pissed? Would it be better or worse if those Marines were killed by a person? Does that really alter your thinking on the subject? Really? I'd be pissed in either scenario. My guess is you would be too.
As far as letting this stand, well, I don't think any rules are being broken. I think this is a case of if you don't want to see don't click. As BarneyMobile correctly said, you'll probably end up losing respect for someone.
Carry on.

Not exactly this, but affirmative action needs to be trashed and everyone held to the same standards. If kids from rich area are all doing well in school and the ones in the poor area aren't, the solution isn't to throw a racial handicap in, but it should be to actually check out everything in that area from the schooling to the community to the families and find out WHY the kids aren't succeeding.

That would require intelligence and common sense, something government doesn't have. It's easier to blame someone/something else OR throw money at the problem instead of getting to the root of it all. It's like putting a band-aide on a 7'' gash.

if the gov. had common sense , before shelling all that $ out to the insurance co., banks, car companys,
they should have came up with a plan to monitor the money or ration it out as needed.
the friggin vice c.o. or c.o. of aig had his office remodeled and purchased a $30,000.00 toilet for his office. where was the comon sense then?
common sense would have been the gov. monitorin the $ spent and to what it went to.
Gov. passed a bunch of bills to delegate $ in certain areas......
want to know what one of them was?
5 billion fund to citizens that couldnt afford cellphones or cable./internet service. Said this would help them get/search for jobs.
Common sense says that if you can't afford ****, and have no job, than get off your ass and go look for one and file applications.

When the current administration stepped in, they put limits and restrictions.
But many Americans are up in arms that the goverment shouldnt meddle with the new success of the banks with restrictions and fees because thats not the American way.
