View Full Version : "private" lounge ?

quick question...i noticed today when i got on the site the "lounge" section was marked "private" and i was unable to get into it. when i logged in, it became visible, and had no issues.
i always log in manually since i share a computer, and found this to be kinda annoying since sometimes im lazy and surf the site without logging in.. what is the purpose of this mods? just wondering..
Yea, its pretty annoying to have to log in all the time.
do you leave your trash can in the middle of your living room?
My guess is it's to prevent bots from posting or gathering info, like googlebots etc and/or to keep people that are banned/suspended from viewing anything on NJFBOA. Makes sense.

do you leave your trash can in the middle of your living room?
Nope. I keep it in the basement...... (That was too easy.)
Seriously, there are lots of boards that force you to log into to see all/most of the content. No big deal.
I don't think it has anything to do with protecting against bots and such, especially if leave the rest of the site wide open. It probably has more to do with basement-like threads being out in the open. Can't have that if your striving to raise the bar. Think of it like an over 18 to enter/21 to drink rock club. The lounge is 18 to enter, the basement is 21 to drink......
If you really want to cut the nonsense start charging a yearly fee:shock: Membership might drop, but quality content could very well rise. TDR (Turbo Diesel Registry charges $35 a year) and its worth every single penny. I get quarterly issues full of great info and the website is better than any warranty program the manufacturer could ever offer. Its like having a dodge tech and cummins tech on-call 24/7 without being banged for the labor rates.
Just saying.......

how is TDR with the duramax gang? just curious cause I own a dmax and always hae been pretty hardcore into them since 01 when they came out.
Its always nice if you have a strange problem particular to a certian vehicle and people are arount to help/suggest fixes

TDR is all dodge/cummins. The pay to play idea keeps the BS level pretty low and the tech very high IMO. That's the beauty of TDR is all the little things that are weak points on the truck (mostly dodge related) get sorted out and good advice/writeups etc. are generated to solve the problems. People are knowledgeable and could probably help any diesel owner in a jam, but I'm sure there are Duramax dedicated sites out there that would serve you better.
Or you could quit playing with light duty stuff and come on over to the only real medium duty diesel offered in a pick up... Just kidding, GM got it right with the Duramax/Allison combo.
Chris

WOW !!! you had me ready to flex some muscles there for a minute...
glad you followed it up with the j/k comment.
I love my dmax, by far an unbelieveable diesel... the power is insane with a programmer, torque is off the charts !!!
And actually is really fun to drive/race around in.
dodge did it right too. the cummins is a very reliable and strong pulling diesel.
my father in law has one and its a great truck, I've used it to haul a 4 car carrier from here to laredo mexico.. good stuff its just that I'm a GM fanatic.

ummmm....no, but my point is why on earth block the lounge? because its casual conversation non-car related? thats makes no sense whatsoever. there is nothing worse in the lounge section than any other section on the site so why all the 'private' and 'garbage' stuff.
casual conversation is garbage to you? :roll:by that rationing, you feel people wouldn't join the site because of what they read in the lounge, and hence, its private?
totally inane if u ask me...
i KNOW people havent joined because of the bs that goes on in the lounge. its a change that was discussed before being made, and its most likely not going to change back...

We do not wish to display the lounge for a number of reasons. Broadcasting the "discussions" that go on in there is one of them. And there is significantly more garbage in the lounge. Most of the deleted or modded posts come from there, and most of it doesn't get to see the light of day.
And as far as people not joining the site- I'm not going to address that directly. But that is a VERY big issue we are trying hard to deal with since it's a balancing act.

Well all this has made me wonder some things....
if all this is kept private to public, and must be member/signed into to view......
than why all the restrictions, rules and dictatorship type b.s.
I believe I read that these rules about cursing, word filters, personal attacks, whining & bitcjhhing, politics and all that are governed/mod-deleted due to the fact we want to show that we are upstanding citizens, and represent a classy organization or whatever.
If its private and can't be read by public unless your a member, than why the pphhooocckk are there all these rules, the lounge should be anything goes

Respect for other members
No threads about politics, religion, the death penalty or abortion
Nothing illegal
No profanity, nudity, risquι pictures, etc.
Grow up, no drama
Tech is for tech
Respect for Sponsors/Vendors
And we are discussing the whole lounge thing. I actually agree with part of what you wrote. I did not realize you needed some kind of immediate validation on that. I'll work on that.

majority would rule, if it wasnt a PRIVATELY OWNED site... you all clicked the little thing saying you agreed to the terms of service when you registered...

politics sucks, go find a politics forum. they always end up the same. Lefty Lou and Righty Ron never agree, it ends up in name calling nonsense and half assed facts being presented as gold. I'll pass, this is a car forum.

not trying to change the fact that its done. just stating the logic behind it isn't well thought out...
you say members would 'stay out of the lounge' as if the lounge is some place drug pushers and street walkers hang out...its just a bit 'much'.
at the end of the day, them not seeing the lounge without logging in does nothing to gain more members, if anything, they will see the lounge when they sign up, and if its as much 'bs' as you say, they wont come back, regardless of what else the site has to offer - thus, all you end up with is an inflated number of members..maybe thats what you are looking for.

The powers to be are trying to balance shielding the nonsense that is the lounge from future members while at the same time trying hard not to lose the current members. Its a tough call, but I think setting the lounge to private won't hurt either side, if you really think logging in is such a hassle, well I dunno what to tell you. Seems like making a mountain out of a mole hole or whatever that is.
A new member, or potential new member odds are will be joining or stumbling across the site via a search that turned up something tech wise, not based on the awesomeness of the JSFBOA section or lounge. However, if they do then look around and see that the place is just full of whiney, nonsensical little kids... well, its adios.
I dunno, its a tough act to do, you wanna attract older, mature members who know their stuff, but at teh same time not push away the little kiddies with 4th gens.

Matt:
You know a lot, as you basically wrote out what I wanted to say...
You guys want a good explanation? Even though we don't owe anybody anything, here we go. Hold on to your butts.
It is incredibly sobering to have guys laugh at the mention of this place at cruise nights. We work hard to keep this place a friendly atmosphere. A lot of the "joking among friends" is not viewed that way to a lot of members. It comes off as being a 55 gallon douchebag in a public forum, and it drives people away. We recieve complaints from people you would never expect to hear from about the behavior on here. This isn't a college frat house. It's a car club's online forum. You want porn- go get it somewhere else. It's a billion dollar industry, you don't have to go far. You want someone to stroke your ego about your manly man street racing escapades- go to a street racing site. You want to talk politics? Have a ball with the bloggers. Got a problem with the word filter? Well, go pound sand. I curse with the best of them, and probably can't even describe a newborn puppy without using the F bomb 5 times. Your buddy runs a shop and will cut discounts? Well, that's nice of him to offer but you can't use this place as a free online billboard. Tell him to man up and become a sponsor. He isn't going to make money on our dime here. It's not like sponsorship for a year even costs that much, and we appreciate and respect our current sponsors.
As for the membership demographics:
The balance between kiddies and old guys is an extremely hard one.
On one hand, the younger crowd is much more adept at technology and the Internet and as such are much more prone to being frequent visitors and up on the latest 'net happenings. However their biggest questions are usually about tires, mufflers and other "entry level mods", and they offer little to no help to other people with ramblings and post whoring in the tech section. They also have little money to put towards club fundraisers such as shirts and calendars. Most of them will not be in the hobby in the next 5 years, and that's being generous. But they boost the site traffic. Places like this can't survive without fresh content.
On the other hand, the older guys aren't as necessarily adept at the Internet or care what the latest Facebook app is. They don't come by nearly as often as the younger guys do. They are here for the cars and some discussions about whatever. Which is good and bad. Good because, well, this is a car club and these guys have typically have been at it for a while. Bad because site traffic from them is low, and some can take the "go away kid I've been doing this since before you were born" attitude- even when they are wrong. But they have knowledge to share, and a few bucks to spend if they like the place.
Somewhere in this madness is a balance we need to meet, to allow younger guys and older guys to frequent this place. Part of finding that balance is through making changes.
We are not trying to be bloodthirsty with our moderating or rules changes. These are rules changes that the members asked for. Maybe not in the pure verbal sense via PM or other message, but sometimes in behavior and member retention.
Also, this is not a government subsidized message board. It's private, and all of its content is property of the site owners. If they don't like it, then it doesn't have to be here. This is also a FREE site, not a paid service. Nobody has ever had to pay membership dues or anything else to be a part of the club. This place is provided totally free to almost everyone on here, and all you have to do is abide by the rules that were posted- which are not even that restrictive if you compare them to other message boards.
We make decisions as a group, to better the club. Contrary to popluar belief it's not to push our own personal beliefs on you. Not all decisions are unanimous, either. We are car guys and girls just like you all are.
So go ahead and say it aloud as a group- F you WBT you arrogant Nazi bastard.

I see your point, then and now, but I don't see any beat down in that link, just a conversation. If a similar poll (say favorite beer) were put up today it would stand as it does not break the rules. Albeit it might get moderated a bunch more based on the rule clarifications. Your point on the home page was good, but that was more of a timing thing.
I'll be the first to tell you things here got put on hold or auto pilot or allowed to slide or however you want to view it here for a while, for various reasons that are no longer an issue or worth talking about now. But there is a renewed sense of action as you can see by the rule clarifications and infraction system that makes it easier for mods to do their jobs.

If they made it that far, then they shouldnt laught at this site. To the passers by, they see a tight knit, very active, and friendly atmosphere.
The people that have stayed on this board are not the guys handing out tons of technical advice. Its the guys and gals that have a damn soul and can actually communicate with people.
Wana hunt down NOS tire valve caps for your 67 SS 396 Camaro? Find somewhere else to go.

And your response is exactly why people laugh at this site. That's a typical pompous reponse. And 90 percent of the people here just want to curse, insult, attack each other and never show up to a meet anyway. How hard is it to communicate in a normal manner, get together to work on cars or discuss cars and not turn every thread into a crapfest? Drop the attitude and maybe we can bring in some real car people. Otherwise we might as well call this place the NJFBOA Romper Room.

BS to this whole paragraph.
JSFBOA, the people that cause so much ruckus on this site, do exactly that.
We work on each others cars
We hang out at least once a month
We talk cars constantly.
We make it to car meets, and not just central.
So, that's nonsense. People want to see what they want with this board. If they see a bunch of clowns, then let me be the first to put on the big red nose.
We have a great mix of tech knowlage as well as true friendship. Maybe people need to grow a spine, or take more then just a passing glance at what this site really has to offer.
If people come here one time, or head it from a guy that knows a guy, and think this site is bogus? And you are gunna focus on the small handful of them, over the people that enjoy this site, then thats a bit stupid.
The people that stick around this site, love it.
People that are anti-social or have some other disorder, then I really dont care if they stay or not. Thats the way I look at it.
But I dont run the site.

Nah he is referring to older guys with restored or in the process of restoring older cars. People that don't wanna deal with the nonsense etc of younger kids. Its all very simple, and for what started as a simple ass action this seems way way out of proportion.

You cant, thats what Im trying to get at.
You also said that old people spend money on the site, but the two most active posters, the two that have caused problems and invade every thread, are both POWER members.
I understand that, on paper, old people want X, young people want Y.
But that so far is not what we have seen here. You target your demographic, and go after that segment.
On GMI, we offer a section for Ford, Chrysler, and other makes, but our focus on writings, editorials, and coverage is on GM.
Again, you dont have to cater to young assclowns, and I dont think this site does. If people want to laugh at this site because of our lack of a massive database for technical data, or because we are dry and straight forward, with no emotion site, then let them walk.
TGO is a good site for third gen info, but lots of people leave there for other boards because of the strictness. if you post a picture that has a non-third gen in it, they will delete it and possibly ban you.
Sites like SSU and the like are also useless because its just a bunch of people blabbering about nothing.
This site offers a bit of everything. We have people here with massive amounts of knowlage, stories, and we have groups of people that have became great friends just because of this site.

Al,
No doubt I was red faced and angry. However it was not a one time deal and they did make valid points for passing on this place each time. The recurring theme among the older muscle crowd is that it's WAY too kiddie here. That's not to say that it has to be all carburators and mortgage talk with no place to act a little stupid.
We are not doing this to appease anyone. We aren't that spineless. But we recognize valid points when we see them. I think that the people who have been here for 5 years are strong enough members to deal with a little change, since they have seen all of the growing pains the board has had, and the complete lack of representation (save for a few) of the first two generations, even though there are TONS of them running around NJ.

Al, I can't believe you still don't get it. People are not laughing because of the lack of knowledge or tech, but rather because of the constant immature and offensive posts like you keep making. Once again you are attacking other people. We don't want young assclowns but this type of attitude is what keeps attracting them. I've been to more meets than most people and majority on this site do not attend meets or even try to attend meets. The smaller group meets are not what we are referring too either, we do that on our own to try and stay active.
People need to act a little more mature and responsible and drop the attitude!

It's the immature cursing, attacks on people, the internet tough guy thing, the constant arguing and egging other people on, etc. is what we don't need. There is nothing wrong with joking around but you have to remember that not all members know each other and lots can't tell the joking from a personal attack if you don't add the smileys. People need to think before they push the "submit reply" button. And don't bother posting at all if you've been drinking, that's where some of the worst posts come from. Lots of them show up after midnight after people have had too much to drink.

I dont see kiddie posts outside of the lounge. Even the JSFBOA posts, while going all over the place, are usually contructive in their own right.
I honestly think if people judge this site by the handful of kiddish posts in the lounge, then maybe you guys need to rethink the lounge.
People are gunna have attitudes, and you cannot control that. You can ban them or shut them out, but Id say the more active members on this site are some of the more active members at meets.

Hence why we are hiding the lounge unless you are logged in. The infraction system is supposed to be a way to control the unruliness without being so black and white about it (let it slide all the time vs. flat out banning).
And you do see useless posts outside of the lounge. That trans line post in the TR/DL section is sure headed that way.

"Shieding" from the lounge nonsense? If you want to "sheild" people from nonsense, you need to look elsewhere than the lounge. there is numerous examples of it in other sections. as someone pointed out (i dont remember who), this is a site for fans of the f-body platform. thats the way i see it. there are people here with all levels of tech knowledge, from novice, to expert. there is also people here, with no knowledge at all, who just like the cars because they like them, and thats good enough for me.
the BS that goes on here is the 'clique-y' high school crap like when someone says something outside the popular consensus, and 10 clique members all jump on them. its happened to me, and im sure its happened to other people. i shrug it off as a bunch of internet tough guys. i dont live on this board day-in and day-out. i have other things more important in my life than the opinions of those on this board. however, i love the f-bodies, and i want to share my thoughts, opinions, and info, with (what i thought) was like minded people. some people here are very genuine, but plenty are assclowns. i may not post alot, or go to every meet (mostly because my schedule doesn't allow it), but i do enjoy checking the boards during the week when i have some free time, and see what fellow f body enthusiasts are up to.
does this make me less of a member than the guy who posts every day in every section and attends every meet?
so in close. its not that logging in was hard (and i never said it was if you check my original post), i said i use a shared computer and therefore, dont save any passwords. (which is what promopted me to start this thread). im not making a mountain out of a mole hill, but im not gonna bend over and take other members 'more valuable opinions' as fact, when all it is, is just that...AN OPINION.

There are two factors at work here. One is what goes on in the lounge, and the other is the "cliquey" stuff you are speaking of. Both are not good but have to be dealt with using reason and a clear head.
This is not a mountain/molehill deal, it just got spun that way. Nothing has caught any of the mods or admins off guard because none of it is new to us. We've gone through all of this before many times.
Just a bit of helpful advise... If the NJFBOA admins are really interested in changing the direction of this website(because what it's become is exactly what it started as... and any deviation from that is a HUGE change), maybe you should end your hypocrisy first. What's nonsensical about it? Because he has poor grammar and doesn't conform to your style of writing? He isn't offensive and he conforms to our rules which is why he stays around. I am yet to see a problem, although I do see a problem with kicking him off for a nonexistent rule (which would also create complaints from certain peoples).

I understand what you are saying, but the issue is singling out people. That simply cannot be done unless there is a rule. A grammar rule (or whatever you want to call it) would be slightly ridiculous wouldn't you say? It's all about uniformity, hence why we make a rule system that we adhere to. Again, I see what you are saying, and as much as I'd like to force maturity and proper grammar for the forum, it just isn't fair.

I understand you dont want to single people out, but j0n is right. His/Her posts are non sense, they may mean something to him/her because he/she knows what he/she was writing. But, to have the next one, two or three posts quoting him to try and figure out what exactly he/she just said is taking away from the actual thread itself. j0n has a point, but quite frankly, you don't. You came in here claiming some sort of authority to dictate who is right and who is wrong. j0n came in with an argument, you came in with a conclusory statement. But, I will humor you. How do you propose we enforce your new policy? Whoever isn't to your liking we tell them? What will that fix? Where do we draw the line? And who will be grading everyone's post, Diana Hacker?

Since you're only humoring me there is really no point in me continuing but I'll humor everyone else. The policy would be quite simple. If your text has to be explained because your post is unreadable, it will be removed. Not everyone here including myself uses perfect grammar, Im sure everyone will pick this apart once I am done. Misspelling a word with letters than sound similar happens all the time, most of the time on purpose. There are reasons for sign language, brail and so on. CHKNHWK's (not sure what the actual screen name is) posts dont have a purpose, it is just a bunch of nonsense and smilie faces. Again I have nothing against the person, just the fact that his text is about as useful as me just writing this entire post with x's and o's, you would have no clue what I was trying to say.

So only his posts are unacceptable? I just don't understand how you propose we enforce this new regulation? Trust me, nonsensical posts bother me just as much as you, but until a reasonable solution is established, it will have to remain.
The admins and mods are discussing it though. When a fair and reasonable solution is established, we will put you all on notice.
Ok, time to voice my opinion......
NJFBOA does not need grammar police. All we need is someone who has broken English sign up, make a few posts, and have them deleted because English is not their primary language, or doesn't make any sense. That's discrimination. For the people that DO speak/type English, and make no sense at all, there is an ignore button if their posts are continually frustrating to you. Internet forums aren't full of dictionary-hugging people.
Carry On.
Ok, time to voice my opinion......

speaking of the ignore button, the current one is useless, as you still see that the post is there, and who posted it.... most of the time i used to just click it and see if it made any sense anyway.....
also when someone posts something so stupid/crazy that six people quote it, the ignore was useless

In no way am I trying to be a ****. Not having complete knowledge of the English language and typing in broken English because it is not their primary language is one thing. Typing in smilie faces is a language? Where? Thats not discrimination that is rediculous. I'll just use the ignore button from now on.

I was just using a non-english member as an example. I wasn't making reference to chknhwk or however its spelled.

I don't remember one reported post regarding the user in question. Nor have I seen one PM sent to me on the topic. That is the best way to get our attention on such a matter. But why do it the right way when you have a soap box to stand on, I suppose. It is much easier to take pot shots when you are unwilling to get involved in a more constructive manner. I don't know, perhaps it has been brought up on the side, but not to my knowledge.
I am going to send the user involved a note because it obviously bothers members, and to a degree I agree. Its more than a matter of basic grammar.

Excessive and / or Useless Posts
The "member" in question has made 11 useless posts since the infraction system went into effect. These are YOUR rules. Why aren't they being enforced?

the member in question is part of the reason i'm not on this site that often anymore. along with the douche street racers talking trash!! that crap gets OLD!! where do they come from? i don't know but i think a romper room forum would be better fit for them.

Bill, the street racing stuff gets stepped on fast. There have been users banned over it.

I just said this:
I am going to send the user involved a note because it obviously bothers members, and to a degree I agree. Its more than a matter of basic grammar.Done. And actually he has received a few infractions. Just because you don't see them does not mean they do not happen. And here will be no more. I have not seen all his posts. It's a fine line between being funny and getting out of hand. Nothing wrong with a little fun, but it appears this has gotten out of hand.
As I said I haven't gotten feeback. Again, the staff appreciates feed back. The report post button works great. PMs to mods and admins works great. All members can choose to help us by utilizing the report post system or sending us PMs. I personally take criticism and suggestions seriously from people who get involved. Not as much as ones that throw rocks from afar.

So we should be happy that you're now enforcing the rules set by the admins a month ago... only after being called out by someone who "throws rocks from afar"?

I happen to know that his posts have been reported, several times. And the staff not doing anything about it until I call you out speaks volumes about how effective the "report post" button works.

I have not seen reported posts on them. I would have reacted the same if you PM'd me. You chose not to and to make it a public affair for your own reasons.

you may have missed them due to my quick trigger finger, but members have reported posts from the member being debated, i have deleted some of them, and taken appropriate action...
maybe when you clicked the email on these occasions there was nothing more to see...

Could be. And trolling through deleted posts I see that.

I apologize for not using the report button and for bringing this out into the open and making a scene. However, I stand by what I said and will contact one of the higher up if I have a problem, from now on.

I just checked the logs. 18 posts of his have been deleted/moderated since the beginning of the year. The infraction system has not been in place long enough to really make a difference but he has gotten 3 points so far. What we do is typically transparent to members.
I am in agreement that gibberish posting is a problem.

Question... is there a rule for say a member getting numerous infraction points but not getting enough to get banned?
So basically a member gets X amount of points, but refrains until they expire and then gets back on it... nothing against that as of now correct?

we can still enforce the rules via the old method...

What he said.
In addition, the existing 2 week/2 month/Permanent ban system will still be in place for flagrant violations - this will be handled with custom infractions.

That is an unwritten rule. Depends if the user wants to play nice or not. I hope we do not have to ever come to that.

One note. Not all reported posts are deleted or automatically actionable. A report brings a post to our attention for review.

It didn't, you made that choice for your own reasons. I've always replied to any PM, IM or whatever you've sent me, which in this case you chose not to do.
