brain fart.... cant think of the term lol..

i started up the 88 the other day, Carb conversion on a 305 TBI motor, and left it to run while i shoveled snow at my grandmas (where the cars kept). I hear it suddenly loose power and its popping and sputtering so i run over n give it a lil gas n nothing, turn the key off n pull it out but it keeps on popping and sputtering for a gooood 30 seconds. tired to start it back up and nothing, let it cool down and no start... what happened??

i didnt have the space, light, or tools to investigate any further, the fuel pump is working however.

I had that happen on a carb car, it ended up begin the carb was leaking. carbon build up can cause it too.

PS: It's dieseling

my camaro(carb) use to run for a good 5 seconds after the key was off, but it was because my MSD ignition was tapped into the same ignition wire that I had the fans hooked to and somehow that made it run after the key was off.

Yes, its called Dieseling. Leaking Carb & Carbon buildup like Bonzo said. The carbon gets so hot that it ignites the fuel. Also incorrect timing plays a factor in it.

Yes, there can be electrical issues that keep the ignition alive as well as mentioned in #3.

LOL thats it! dieseling!

maybe sumthin came loose, i took a quick peek with a flash light before i covered it back up n left, ill hafta check again wen its warmer out... as for carbon build up, theres maybe 800 miles since i did the carb swap

Your car is Possessed and wants to KILL YOU !! Na but dieseling could be the problem go buy a can of sea-foam and try that.

The carbon build up we are referring to is inside the cylinders. While the car is running the carbon heats up, and when you shut it off, the leaking carb is allowing fuel to enter the cylinder, which is ignited by the hot carbon.

update! went back today with my battery charger and charged it up... it just keeps turing over, doesnt even try to start. i guess ill hafta bring tools and start checking the timing and wat not... what are the signs of a timing chain biting the dust?

crank turning and cam not turning. pull a valve cover and see if the valve train moves. i doubt that happened from sitting, check the basics and maybe freshen the gas up. try starting it with carb cleaner if you verify spark.

i had a similar problem for a while until i went out and got a timing light, turns out i was a good 10 degrees off timing lol, my choke linkage is still all messed up and i need a dashpot, also the floats are worn to hell, but it did help a little bit, i'd check that first, also stopped my backfiring through the carb when it started to spudder and die lol

update!

went over there with a few basic tools, NO SPARK! i pulled the top of the dizzy off, the coil is getting power however isnt creating spark, i have a spare dizzy im guna take the top off and swap them, maybe a bad connection at the coil

Glad to hear you got it running again!

Did you just change the ign module or the whole distributor? did this solve the dieseling issue?

just the module. the desieling was a one time thing, im guessing after the module crapped out it didnt shut off imediatly
