u joint swap

im swiching my stock 98 trans am u joint to one compatible with my moser 9". what is the proper way to get it out? can you beat it out with a hammer or do you need a press?

If you do not have access to a press you can use a vise and a pair of sockets.

Are the U joints in the shaft the factory original? If so, they are held in place by injected nylon. I was able to get them out by heating the lobes with a propane torch. You will know when its hot enough, the nylon will expand and shoot out the injection holes like a snake. Then the joint can be driven out with a socket and hammer. Otherwise, you risk damage to the shaft, especially if its aluminum.

Im not sure if thats true for aluminum shafts. Might be, i haven't done them with my LS1 shafts yet. But, on my thirdgen 1LE shaft, there wasn't.

I had a problem on my buddies surburban's shafts with my propane torch not being hot enough. I had to take them to work and use oxy/Acetylene torch. Just be careful because the grease can make the caps explode/blow off if you get them too hot.

The 00 ls1 aluminum shaft I got from Charlie had the OE joints held in with injected nylon.

All it takes is a few minutes with the propane torch and it comes apart without beating the heck out of it.

i tried heating up last night but it still didnt give so i took it to a local trans shop and they swapped it for me. i think my torch just couldnt get hot enough

my steel shaft out of my 96 and a 01 alum i got off ebay had nylon in it. had to heat it up to get the nylon out :P you can normally see a tiny hole with nylon in it on the side of the driveshaft
