So as some of you may know I was unemployed for about a year and a half before I was offered a "temporary part-time" job working for the State of NJ Dept of Labor. I can't work more than 27.5 hours a week, I make about 28.5k a year, I get no benefits, I get at most HALF of the vacation and sick time that the other employees do, I have to be a member of the union though I get no true union protection because I am a temporary employee. We only work 4 days a week to meet the 27.5hr requirement. There are 5 of us and what we used to do is one person had off every day of the week, if someone needed a day off they would talk to the person with that day of the week off and we would switch in order to ensure coverage and staffing needs while still allowing us to take care of things we need to.

I get an email today addressed to the five of us stating the following:
"Staff:
You are no longer allowed to rearrange your days off. This arrangement is getting out of hand, other staff wants to do the same and it’s getting difficult to follow the schedule. 17 staff members in this office do not have this “switching” privilege. I need to make it fair.

Thank-you for your cooperation"

Ummm WTF? The people complaining about this are paid no less than 40k a year, get 2-3x the vacation days and 2x the sick days we get per year, are full time, with benefits, full union protection, enrolled in the pension, are allowed to work voluntary O/T, can sign up for paid training, etc. I know I can't complain and say I want that stuff because that isn't my position and I took the job KNOWING I wouldn't get F/T and benefits, at the same token shouldn't the same go for them? Whiners want to complain switch jobs with me. I'll take your cushy full time permanent position so I can be financially secure again and deal with working 5-6 days a week, and you can have my POS position and wonder if you're going to have enough to make ends meet and get to have a spare day a week to take off.

I think the state needs to cut their workforce in half. Might be more efficient then.

I think we need to delete a few of the 250k plus a year jobs that do nothing. My dept has 1 employee that makes over 250k, his job is supposed to be taking care of ALL customer complaints but he doesn't answer the phone, his 100k plus a year administrative assistant does that. Then she tells him the problem, then he tells her a way to go about fixing, then she fixes it, then she calls the customer back to see how they feel. Why do we need 2 people pulling in 350k+ to do that?

because 20 years on the job should entitle you job security over temporary employees abusing their day off scheduling. you know what they say martin, last hired...first fired

 **** happens. Most employers don't like their employees changing around their schedules without authorization anyway. Think about how the people trying to figure out who worked what hours when they're doing the payroll. This is just them making their own lives easier. It has nothing to do with being employed by the state.

dont feel bad, im getting the shaft as well. i work full time at shop rite... ha ha ha.... and since im technically a new hire even tho ive been with the company ten years, I have no limit on the amount of nights i can close. if my manager wanted me to close all 6 days of the week i would have to. The OLD contract which rocked, full timers only had to do two nights and no more. not to mention im barely clearing 20k a year.... with one week vacation. i need a new job. anyone? lol

Unfortunately it just sounds like you are at the bottom of the totem pole and that is how it is going to be at most places. Try and stick it out and maybe with a little luck, you will move up into a better position...

It's not abusing it if you ensure there was coverage and don't do it all the time unless you have a valid reason there cheif, not like someone else I know that was abusing his job at a certain quick serve restraunt by giving away copious amounts of free food to people.

You are just one heck of a pot stirrer dude, remember when you point a finger you have 3 pointing back.

and also, you're saying it's ok for someone to make over a quarter million per year to have a job that he doesn't do just because he has been there for 20 years? If he actually did his job and didn't have his secretary do it for him I would agree with you, but that's not the case.

i wasnt speaking of you in particular, but from the memo it seems someone has been abusing the policy. they are going to protect their long term employees over a 944 employee (which i assume you are). i also speak from experience on this one, knowing many people that work for the state and knowing exactly what your speaking of. it might not seem fair that he's making 250k for what you see as a minimally invasive job but he's also put in his time and worked his way up from the same position you are...no reason that cant be you in 20 years then right?

as for high school kids giving away free fast food (which will only get thrown out anyway) to their friends out the drive thru window...well thats just something i havent thought about in a loooooooooooooong time

lol, i remember weird stuff like that

just talked to my boss today, it was all the part time menial employees who weren't clearing it with management who would call out every monday and switch their day off to that day, she just didn't want to call them out in the email so the F/T employees just said blame it on us. I am less angry about it now, because the reason is legit and not just arbitrary.
