so you prove my point that the car might actually be priced alright. the vinyl and the stick on vents can come off easily...other than that the cars alright. tails are easy to change too. its priced exactly in the range of a young high school car buyer....which all the ''extras'' you may hate some will love. id rather drive that in high school than a neon or a cavalier.

bottom line? theyll get every penny theyre asking for the car.

Those are nice but there is just something about the trailer fresh look of the 'maro. The done under a tree paint job, the mudered out swap meet wheels, the air shocks all on a 3rd Gen. That right there is art. A piece of Americana.
It paints a picture. Just think of the drunken Budweiser journeys that have happened in that car, the floozies with too much make-up named Tammy who waitress that haved shared moments of forgetable regret in it.
Its kind of like a reverse mullet, party up front business out back.

OK, the red and the white kammbacks are prototypes. But I do believe it was available on the second gen trans am as an option. I recall seeing a few on the road.

How about this 4th gen Hurst version?

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/hurst_hauler_large_1.jpg

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/hurst_hauler_large_3.jpg

The one-off machine, known as the Hurst Hauler, has made it to auction on eBay with a Buy It Now price of $35K. Originally introduced for the Y2K SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the car went on to star in the 2001 Hot Rod Power Tour driven by the guys at Year One. Based on a 2000 WS6-equipped TA, the ram air-fed 5.7L LS1 small block has seen some extra tuning in the form of a Corsa exhaust, custom-ground Erson camshaft, Accel fuel injectors and custom ECU tuning from TTS Power Systems. The result is about 370 horses according to The General's official press release from back in the day, which we've gone ahead and pasted after the break. Be sure to check out our gallery of pics, including the car posing with Miss Hurst herself, Linda Vaughn

This was a production option. The GTA Notchback. People still pop out copies of the rear hatch. You can find them on ebay sometimes if you want to make your own Notchback.

I was under the impression that none of these were production options, I thought they were post production mods like the ASC and SLP cars.

What's the RPO?

Mark42
04-22-2010, 07:40 PM
The only other exterior option was the short-lived GTA Notchback of 1988-89. Seeking something to further differentiate the GTA models from the rest of the Firebird line and in an attempt to lessen the "greenhouse effect" from the big rear hatchback glass, GM came up with the idea of an optional flat-glassed rear notchback hatch lid (RPO AA8), similar in appearance to the 1968-1976 Chevrolet Corvettes. Beginning in December of 1987, this was a GTA-specific option and could not be ordered on any other Firebird (or Chevrolet Camaro model).

Production records show a total of 625 units were built during 1988 and 1989. The option was actually canceled before the start of production for 1989; a dealer bulletin in August 1988 announced its demise, instructing dealers to recall any and all GTA orders with the Notchback code on them. Still, PMD records show that one single car was built for 1989........ no doubt the car pictured above from the 1989 Pontiac brochure.

Today these GTAs are very rare sights and are highly collectible, even though the style really did not catch on during their brief production run. These cars were the only GTAs not to use a variation of the rear aero-wing spoiler, since the notchback design changed the layout of the hatch lid. PMD engineers simply installed the standard flat Firebird spoiler instead of the usual aero-wing unit.

I wish I could find a picture of a 2nd gen wagon. Because they were not hatchbacks, I guess it was all metal work. The roofline was so sloped on the regular T/A that when continued on a wagon roof line, it resulted in a rear window that was very short and narrow.

I always assumed these were OE options, but I can't find anything on the net about them. Maybe they were a post-dealer conversion. Still don't know why I can't find pics of them.

That I can answer. You are thinking of the Kammback concept. It was never approved for production.

But id we're talking quirky GM cars I'll raise your Cosworth Vega with a Covair Monza Spyder.

Mark42

I had a 78 Chevy Monza coupe (not hatch back). It was cool because it had the spider nose and hood, but was a coupe. I replaced the iron duke 4 banger with a Buick 3.8 and 5 speed. Edelbrock high rise intake, Holly 4 bbl carb, heavy duty clutch, Monza long tube headers, no power steering, a/c etc. It was fast, handled really great, better than the Vegas it was based on. But it did have that crappy 7.5" rear. When I finally took the rear apart, it was a mess, everything was just worn to the point of breaking.

I ran 195 70 13 front and 235 60 14 in the back. Back then I was pretty poor, but it was one of my favorite hot rods. Other than the wheels and exhaust, it looked stock and ran like a scalded cat.

BTW, the price of fuel was on the rise back then, otherwise I would have put in a 305 or 327 and automatic.

Amazingly, it never rusted.
