The Union Pacific No. 844. It was the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific and is one of the last surviving and still operational original steam locomotives in the world. It doesn't run all that much, but I heard it was passing through so I went down to the station this morning to watch it leave at 8am.

It was pretty impressive. It stands nearly twenty feet tall, and the engine and tender alone weigh nearly one million pounds. I can't even imagine how amazing it must have been in the '20's, '30's, '40's, and '50's to see them all lined up at the train station.

That is sooooooo cool. Man that is crapload of Seafoam blowing out of that engine! When I worked at Flemington, there was a steam engine you could ride on and I think there still is one that also runs around New Hope. Do they give rides on this engine?

new hope still has theirs, and it runs all summer.

Not sure about flemington/ringoes anymore

Strasburg railroad museum in PA still use one.

The engineer said it's not that much anymore due to the insurance company raising the cost, but he said it will run once this summer as a passenger train from Denver to Cheyenne and back. I'm really thinking about saving up for it. Here's a link;

The 60' time was like two minutes lol It takes a while for them to get moving, but the engineer said she'll cruise at 75mph like a Rolls-Royce :)

The New Hope & Ivyland still runs regularly.

The Black River & Western in Flemington still does operate passenger excursions as well as frieght, but the steam engine # 60 has been taken apart to be rebuilt and they ran out of money.

wouldn't that be measured in "thrust"?

No, they dont make much thrust at all. They are measured in shaft HP. Which is about 5000 shp each turbine.

The whistle in person was pretty loud, and it vibrated your body. You could hear it reverberating off all the surrounding buildings. It sounded soooo cool :D

This was a cool video showing all the different cars from the different railroads. Including the Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central, and even the old Zepher.

all that steam you see when they start moving is bypassing the pistons .. i think ... lol. Its the engineers job to not spin the wheels. its amazing how just steam pressure at 300 PSI can move all of that weight.

LTb1ow
04-28-2010, 06:16 PM
Prob a tad more than 300psi if its a oil fired burner, dunno if its still a fire in tube type boiler, but it should be able to get a tad more.

Still pretty crazy, steam power plants are pretty bad ass.

me too, I was into HO scale.

My father used to work for Pullman standard in Butler (pittsburgh area) making the hopper cars. I have a few Authern models of the cars he built that say "Butler, PA" on them.
